This is a letter from one of Hans' partners.
My name is Ferry Suhartono, partner from Hans van den Berg from
Holland who was staying in Indonesia.
I am trying to find out a bit more about his friends etc, to inform
them about what happened.
Just recovering of the robbery he went through in Indonesia, and
with his passport back and everything moving on again, he was going
to move to a house alone since he was not satisfied with the way of
live in a boardinghouse.
However, one evening one of the other guests there fell asleep while
smoking which set the boardinghouse on fire.
From the people who were at home, the wife of the owner, the
sleeping guest and mr Hans, were killed by the fire or the smoke.
His body has recently be sent to Holland for burrial.
I would appreceate it when the group(s) will delete the
name/membership from mr Hans. In due time I will delete his email at
internet, but for the moment I will leave it open for comments.
I hope everyone will remember him kindly. He had friends all over
the world and was someone who -even when he himself was in problems-
tried to help others. I have had stories from friends as far as
Ghana, China, Lesotho, Russia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, India and Ecuador
who told me about his kindness, his help, his hospitality. He helped
foster children in India, Indonesia and Ecuador, as well as Tibetan
monks in India.
It is a good remembrance.

To put it in simpler terms, Hans was recently robbed of his passport and other items. As he was overcoming this, he decided he wanted to move to a normal home by himself because he did not like the boarding house life. One of his friends fell asleep while smoking, which caused the house to catch on fire, killing the "sleeper", the house owner's wife, and Hans.
