chapter twenty-nine.

After Zac and I had this amazing sex, we lay there on the bed, not saying anything for a while. Hell, I had no idea what to say. I just lay there, my head resting on his chest, one of my arms draped across his torso, his fingers running lazily through my hair. I felt his chest rise and fall with each breath that he took; the feeling of his fingers through my hair felt so nice and soothing that I sighed in appreciation.

“You okay?” Zac asked quietly.

“I’m perfectly fine,” I breathed, smiling a little and closing my eyes.

“Good. Hey Trish?”

“Hm?” I asked. Though I was slowly coming back down to reality, my mind was still a little out there.

“That was … really nice.”

I smiled. “It was,” I said. We were quiet again for a little while.

“What time is it?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

Zac reached over and grabbed his cell phone, flipping it open. “Mm, it’s about 10:30. Hmm, and I have a voicemail …” I lay on his chest as he checked his voicemail, and then he suddenly said, “Oh, shit.”

“What’s wrong?” I asked, looking up at him.

“It’s from Taylor. He’s uh, on his way back.”

“What? What time did you get that?”

“I don’t know! I wasn’t paying attention to the lady at the beginning! I was paying more attention to you and us and this –“ Zac stopped. “What if he’s right outside the hotel right now?”

I felt the blood drain from my face at that thought. “Then we better get to changing, shouldn’t we?”

“I think so.”

Zac got up and walked shamelessly to the bathroom to do whatever he needed to do. I looked around for the blanket and that light sheet they leave on the beds; I found them on the floor at the end of the bed. I grabbed the light one and wrapped it around myself, listening to Zac singing to himself in the bathroom.

The power still wasn’t on yet – but it was sunny out, so we had some light to work with. I wondered if Isaac and Jenn were up yet – but I wasn’t about to go walking in with a sheet covering me. I figured that I should change first.

Zac came out from the bathroom, decked in some new boxers, but still shirtless. “Want to use the shower?” he asked. “I’ll … clean up a little here.”

“You don’t need it?” I asked, blushing as I pulled the sheet tighter around me. And yes, I know that Zac and I had just done something that involved us being nude, but for some reason I still felt like I needed to cover up.

“Nope, I’ll use it later,” he grinned. So I took advantage of his offer and took a quick shower, changing into some fresh clothes and feeling good. When I went back into the main room, nothing had really changed. Zac was just laying on the bed, spread out. “You can use the shower now if you want to,” I said. When he didn’t respond, I asked gingerly, “Zac?”

Still no response. He just lay there, breathing in and out. As I got closer, I saw that his eyes were closed. Could it be that Zac was asleep? I crawled in next to him, afraid that he would jump up and scare the hell out of me. He had done it before, so it wouldn’t have surprised me if he did it again. But he was definitely asleep. So I let him sleep, cleaning up the place a little bit, ripping up the condom wrapper into tiny pieces and disposing of it. I found my cell phone, which had been tossed onto the other bed and was shut off – I guess that Zac had somehow turned it off. I turned it on and let it rest on the bed, hearing that signaling tone that let me know I had a new message. Or messages. I made a mental note to check them soon.

I could hear some very muffled talking from Isaac and Jenn’s room, so I went over and knocked on the door. “Come in!” I heard Jenn say. I opened the door gingerly and saw her sitting on the bed with Isaac, reading him a newspaper. It was a very odd sight.

“Hey,” Isaac greeted me. “What’s up?”

“Just wanted to see if you guys were up, that’s all,” I said, smiling a little. “How’d you sleep?”

“Like a baby … in a sauna,” he cracked. He scratched his head. “I’m going to shower, but you can come in and talk to Jenn if you want.”

I nodded, walking into their room as Isaac headed into the bathroom. “Hey Jenn!” I said cheerfully. I went to sit on the other bed. “How’d you sleep?”

“Fine, thanks,” she said. “What about you?”

“Didn’t get much really. Why were you reading the newspaper to Isaac?”

Jenn grinned. “It was all I could do to keep him out of your room,” she replied.

“Wh-what?”

“He wanted to go in there this morning Trish; he wanted to wake you guys up. But I wouldn’t let him.”

Trying to play it off like I had not been doing anything incriminating, I asked, “Why not?”

Jenn gave me a “duh” look. “I know what you and Zac were doing in there, Trish.”

“You – you what?!” I asked, absolutely horrified. “Oh my God, how do you know?”

“I was awake when Zac closed the door. Don’t think I don’t remember it being open last night. And oh yeah, tell Zac to talk a little quieter next time.”

“Oh my God,” I said, my hand flying to my mouth. “Jenn, you can’t –“

“Tell Isaac or Taylor, I know, I know. Don’t worry; your secret’s safe with me.”

I could’ve kissed the ground she walked on right then. Was she a true friend or what? “Thank you thank you thank you,” I said, throwing my arms around her. “I owe you.”

Jenn laughed, hugging me back. “I’ll keep that in mind,” she grinned.

We heard a knock at the door – at the other door, to the other room. I froze and saw Zac get up to answer it. And then I heard a voice, a very familiar one:

“Hey – whoa Zac, what’ve you been up to? It looks like you have sex hair, good God!”

Taylor was back.

“Where’s everyone else?” I heard him ask, as he walked into the room.

“Um – Jenn and Isaac are in their room, I have no idea where Trish is,” I heard Zac reply. Taylor walked right past the open door, then backtracked a little. “Hey guys!” he called out happily, practically skipping into the room. “I missed you!”

“Hey, Tay!” I said, putting on my biggest smile. I stood up and opened my arms towards him. He came over immediately and gave me the biggest hug ever, kissing me lightly. “How in the hell did you get home?”

“I walked for a very, very long time. I started right after I called you this morning. I tried calling you again, but your phone probably died,” he grinned, brushing some hair out of my face and kissing me again. “But I’m here now so I can talk to you all I want.”

I grinned as Taylor gave me another huge hug. Then he went over to Jenn and hugged her too – he was that excited to be home. “Where’s Isaac?” he asked, just as Isaac walked out of the bathroom.

“Tay!” was Isaac’s surprised reaction to seeing his brother there. “Hey dude – how’d you get back? The power’s still off.”

“Walked,” Taylor grinned. “And I just climbed twenty flights of stairs.”

“Twenty? Jeez! You can still walk?!” I asked in surprise. I could barely climb five flights without wanting to die and Taylor had just climbed twenty?!

Taylor shrugged. “Wasn’t too bad. I took small breaks.”

“I see … well, welcome back, I have no idea what we’re doing today but I’m guessing our radio thing is cancelled,” Isaac said.

“Yeah, they called me this morning, it’s definitely cancelled,” Taylor said. “No telling if our concert tomorrow is cancelled, though. I guess we’ll find out.”

“Hm … so we’re going to sit here doing nothing?” Jenn asked.

Taylor shrugged. “Basically. I’m going to try to sleep though, I’m tired as fuck.”

“Good luck,” Jenn said.

Taylor laughed, grabbing my hand and pulling me into the other room. I heard the shower going – Zac had probably gone to take one. “How’d you sleep?” he asked. I saw his eyes go to the crumpled blanket on the floor. “You must’ve been tossing and turning a lot last night if you kicked those off of the bed.”

I forced out a laugh. “Well, yeah,” I said. “You know me when it’s hot … I kick off a lot of things off of the bed.”

Taylor snorted. “No kidding, you used to try to kick me off when we were younger,” he grinned.

“Well, you always wanted to cuddle with me when it was, like, a million degrees out.”

“Because, Swishy, you’re the best person to cuddle with, even if it is, like, a million degrees out.”

I smiled up at him, feeling that guilt stuff eat away at me. Taylor smiled back, then hugged me again. “Well, after Zac’s done showering, I guess I’ll go shower too and then try to sleep. Care to join me?”

I shook my head. “I’ve had enough sleep for today, I think,” I replied.

“Aw, alright then,” he grinned. He went over onto the bed – THE bed – and sprawled out across it, resting his hands on his stomach. It took all of my strength not to jump at him and make him move onto the other bed. I took a deep breath and went to join him, sitting up. He grinned, positioning himself so that his head was in my lap. He then started singing a very familiar song …

“If you want to destroy my sweater …”

The rest of the day was spent doing basically nothing. The power came back on in the afternoon and we all cheered. We went out that night looking for something to eat and to take in the sights of the city. The boys needed to get back early – their concert the next day was definitely happening. As soon as the power went on, Taylor’s cell phone rang and he was informed that the concert would still go on as scheduled. He seemed happy and excited about it; I didn’t think twice as to why. He was just in a very happy mood. He held onto my hand as often as he could, stole kisses, and basically stuck to my side the whole time. Zac, on the other hand, made as little contact with me as possible, glancing away or not really saying anything when I talked to him.

Jenn also got a call from Mr. Hanson saying that they were in New York as well with everyone and all the instruments that they needed. So after dinner, we headed back to the hotel and greetings were exchanged between everyone else. The acoustic guitars were brought out and they got to practice some songs in the hotel room. We all got to see raw talent at its best. While Mr. Hanson and that whole crew went to bed, the boys, Jenn and I stayed up, but not for long. Now that the electricity was on, we turned on the air conditioners and reveled in it. “Electricity, I love you,” Isaac proclaimed, as the rooms got to almost bone-chilling cold. We were that excited about it. We ended up going to bed before twelve – we were all tired and Isaac was being perverted – a sure sign that it was late. Zac opted to stay with Jenn and Isaac, so Taylor and I went into our room, diving under the blankets and snuggling close together, drifting off quickly into sleep.

I woke up to the sound of Taylor showering and the voices in the next room. I stretched my arms, checking the nightstand for the alarm clock that we had fixed. Sitting on top of the nightstand was a little Hershey’s kiss. I felt confused, but didn’t have too much time to dwell on it because someone knocked on our door. I got up to answer it, smoothing down my hair and rubbing my face. I checked through the peep hole, which didn’t help because it was scratched up. So I opened the door and saw this guy standing there – with a vase full of beautiful roses.
