Cure for a Cough

Take one pint of strong vinegar; put in a quart bottle; add two new laid eggs, shells and all; let it stand in a warm place, shaking it well occasionally, till the vinegar dissolves the shells, which will be in two days if the vinegar is strong enough; then add one pound of strained honey; shake it well, and let it stand, when it is ready for use; take a tablespoon three times a day.

Whitening the skin

Take-----
    a wineglassful of Fresh lemon-juice

    A pint of     Rain water
a few drops Otto of roses

Mix, and keep in a well-corked bottle.

The face and hands may be washed with this several times a day, allowing it to remain on three or four minutes before wiping.  Whenever there are any superficial and transient stains on the skin not readily removed by soap and water, rubbing the spot with a little piece of lemon should be resorted to next, as in the majority of cases it will quickly remove them.

Melt the spermaceti in a pipkin, then add the oil of almonds, and when they are thoroughly mixed, stir in the honey.  Take the pipkin off the fire, and stir constantly until it is cool, adding the scent.

This pomade may be applied at night after washing the skin, and be allowed to remain until morning.  It not only lessens the redness, but sooths the burning, dry, and irritated feeling of the skin.

To preserve eggs

The following method for preserving eggs has been used with success, and eggs thus packed have been taken out good at the end of two years. Take air-slaked lime, and mix water with it till it is of the consistency of Indian pudding to the stir about. Put a layer of this in the bottom of a tight vessel, and set the eggs up, small end down far, enough apart that each egg may be encased in the lime." Or, "Make the water strong enough with lime to bear the eggs, and to each four gallons of water put in one pound of bicarbonate pf soda, stir up well and keep the eggs covered with boards and weight.

Receipt for Washing the Head

Take a fresh laid egg; beat it thoroughly; then rub it upon the head into the hair with the hands until it begins to feel dry; then rinse with clear water; either warm or cold, as you please, till the water runs clear. As this leaves the hair dry, with a decided tendency to curl, some oil is necessary, and the best is bear's oil, if you can get it. I do not mean the stuff that is sold under that name so often. Genuine bear's oil gives the hair a smooth, glossy look that no other oil will, while it is perfectly healthy both for the head and the hair.
