Hancocks High Desert Cavies

“Cavies are like potato chips, you can’t have just one”

Welcome to Hancocks High Desert Cavies

Hello, my name is Virginia and my family and I raise predominantly Texel Cavies.

Let me give you a little history about how our venture into cavies began.  My daughter was assigned a science project that she had to put together and her topic was the Cavy.  She chose this topic because she already had a pet store cavy named Phillip.  We all thought that she could gain some valuable insight into the necessary upkeep for Phillip and thus began the adventure. Being the naturally inquisitive mother that I am, I decided to help her with the research end of the project.  Low and behold there it was...one of the most adorable guinea pigs that I had ever seen THE TEXEL!  I took one look at the Texel and said "I have to have one of those".  The rest is history....

We started collecting cavies in 2007 after attending a Rabbit and Cavy show in Pomona, CA.  Thanks to Mildred Bader and Jackie Grisfai I have collected some of the most wonderful foundation stock possible.  Since then our herd has expanded and we have fallen in love with this funny little creature called the Texel Cavy.  Most recently, we have added a couple more types of cavies to our herd, namely, the Peruvian, Coronet, and Teddy.  They are all so irresistible!  There is nothing like walking into your caviary and seeing all of those cute little faces squeaking and waiting for you.

Texel cavies are best described as having a short, compact body with a broud well-rounded head.  Their coat consists of soft ringlets or curls that when fully coated hang to the floor.

Our cavies are fed a high grade pellet, supplemented with lots and lots of Timothy hay and fresh veggies daily.  We also provide them with plenty of fresh water and guinea pig treats that we get from our friend Jackie at Cutie Pie Acres.

We do show our cavies and enjoy traveling to shows across Southern California.

I do have to say that without my husbands help, all of this would not be possible.  My son and daughter also contribute greatly to their care.

Thanks guys for all that you do for me.  Love You, Mom

  The Infamous Phillip
