29th September W.Sussex/ SAS Autumn Intercounty Invitation Fun Meet

Sorry the report is a bit late but I was unaware that any of us had turned up to this meet. First of all I would like to thank FishyRob and Brad for taking the time out to fish this meet on our behalf, even if they did come in last place!!! FishyRob managed a couple of Garfish and a Red Mullet while Brad was unlucky to blank. Also FishyRob donated a few D-vice's for prizes which was good of him. If our members have not already seen the D-vice I would suggest that you have a look at www.dvice.co.uk and give them ago.

Individual Results

Second was Alan T with 6 fish for 275 points

Best round fish was won by Weehaggis with a nice bass of 50cm for 122 points. He got £25 plus 10 Tronix rigs

Most fish was won by Alan T for £15 plus ten Tronix rigs (Ally and Badger2 had more and Mark_S had the same as Alan but we limited it to one prize per angler from the pool to spread the prizes as widely as possible)

Most species was won by Mark_S for £15 plus ten Tronix rigs (same number of species as Alan T but Alan won the most fish prize)

Most unusual fish was won by to sjp1979 with a Gurnard for £10 plus ten Tronix rigs (Ally also had a gurnard but had already won the match)

Team Results

There were a total of 27 anglers booked in. My records show that 4 were from Team Essex, 3 from Team Extreme, and 2 (Brad B and - rather dodgily - Fishyrob) flying the Hampshire banner, leaving the other 18 as SAS members.

Based on a straightforward average score per angler. The results work out as follows

SAS total points 1019 making an average of 56.6 points per angler
Team Essex 428 points making an average of 107 points per angler
Team Extreme 276 points making an average of 92 points per angler
Hampshire Hookers 83 points making an average of 41.5 points per angler

This makes Team Essex (Alan T, Jassyfa, sjp1979 and Issy) the winners.

I had been looking forward to this meet for sometime and as it got closer I was busy in the planning stages deciding what tactics to adopt and what baits I should use. I decided on Lug and Peeler as my main options but took plenty of Squid and Mackerel for backup baits. I had also managed to find myself a local bait digger who supplies Lug, Rag and Peeler at a fraction of the shop prices, if you would like details drop me a pm on WSF.

The weather report for the day of the meet was not looking good, with a gusty wet night being forecasted, but if you go by the weather report you would end up staying at home all the time and never get any fishing done!

At around 13.00 I went out to pick up my bait from a guy called Wayne, I had put an order in for 100 Lug but when I got there he told me he had put in around 300 worms as some of them were a bit small, excellent stuff Wayne. I got home and separated the worms after getting a call from Ivor earlier in the day telling me his bait supplier had let him down I was easily able to give him 50ish. They all looked in very good condition and they were not too bad on size. Still I had far more than I was ever going to use in one night!

As the meet got closer the forecast had improved slightly but at 17.00 it was still raining rather heavily and the meet was due to start at 19.30. Luckily I had arranged to buy a beach buddy off Edgey so I wasn’t going to get wet if the rain kept up.

It was planned that we meet in the car park at the end of Lee On Solent at 19.30 but as always I was running late! I was travelling down with my fiancées brother who is pretty new to fishing but has already managed a very impressive Conger on his second trip out with me. We arrived at the car park at just before 20.00 and see the rest of the guys heading down the path towards the beach. As we were getting our gear out the car RichardB turned up and then Ivor came back up to the car park to give us directions on where we would fish.

We started to make the walk down to the beach and meet Andy Colmer and Edgey who had got to the meet early and set up right on top of the car park which I must say looked like a good plan when I saw how far we were going to have to trek! We had a quick chat with them and asked how they had got on so far, not good. I must say they did look rather cosy tucked up in Edgeys little tent trying to shelter from the persistent rain. I picked up the beach buddy and started the walk, I must remember to empty a few of the leads out of my bag and only take what I need when the venues are this far from the car!

Finally we arrived at the mushrooms as they are called, not sure why they just look like mounds of shingle to me, but this is near Portsmouth and I think a few of them maybe on mushrooms!! Had a quick chat with Ivor and said hello to a few others then started to set up. As per normal I set up both my rods with pulley rigs ready for big baits in the hope of tempting a few nice Bass or maybe even a decent Smutt. I loaded them up with a nice juicy Lug and Squid cocktail and cast them both out at varying distances. Neil, my fiancées brother also loaded up with Lug and Squid and sent them out.

After an hour or so and no interest on the Lug I decided to give a Peeler a try but didn’t want to use too many of them as I was waiting for the high tide which was not until 03.00. I had heard from Ivor that a few fish were being caught and most of them were on Ragworm which of course I never bothered to get! Ivor had had a few Pout and Smutts and I think a couple of the others had also had Smutts, still nothing being caught down with Andy and Edgey but they were waiting for a bit of water to fish in still!

As for the weather, the rain was on and off still but it was much better than we were expecting so happy days.

By midnight and still not having had a bite I decided that it was time to bring out the big guns and loaded up a pulley rig with a Lug and Peeler cocktail, I also changed rigs on my second rod and tried a two hook flapper with Squid and Mackerel in the hope of maybe catching something smaller, by this point I was thinking anything would do just to save a blank! Still I am sure that Ragworm was the bait to be on but never had any.

Anyway by 03.00 I had just about tried everything I could think of and still not managed so much as a bite let alone a fish! By 04.00 we called it a night.

I was hearing reports of fish being caught for most of the night but nothing special until RichardB managed to land himself a good sized Sole and he than managed to get a second which I believe was even bigger so well done Richard. As the tide got higher Andy and Edgey also started to catch and they had a good few fish between them by the end of the night, Ivor managed 14 fish in total and I think Andy had around 12 which included a Sole. Poutmaster and Pompeyboy also managed a few fish each. I and Neil managed to blank; no matter what we tried it just wasn’t our night. Also Richgodfrey blanked but that is nothing new! All in all it was a good nights fishing with a few nice fish being caught and the weather not being so bad that we had to cancel.

Thanks to all that turned up, welcome to Poutmaster (Bob) our newest member and Warriorgunner hope that arm gets better soon mate.

Inn On The Beach, 1st Of April 07

Well after some confusion the meet changed venue from Eastney to the Inn On The Beach at Hayling Island. This decision was made after poor catch reports from Eastney and some poor weather forcasted. The meet was set for 8.30am and I arrived at around 7.30am with Birdsnest Master, there were a  few people on the beach already and by 10.00am I would guess that at least 40 anglers were there and the sun just starting to break through the clouds. It turned out to be a good day out, although not to many fish made the effort to come and meet us! We had a few people who turned up from Sussex, Kent and Dorset and of course a good few of us there. It was nice to see that the windsurfers stayed well clear of the area and no jetskis were around.

Hopefully the next meet at West Bexington goes just as well for the DAB boys and you never know, maybe there will be a few more fish to catch. Thanks to all who put the effort into making this work and thanks to everyone who turned up.
