Maaka Karin is your seemingly average high school girl. She's cure, clumsy and a little bit air headed; however, a very kind person in deed. She may seem completely normal, but under her exterior lies a deep and frightening secret. Karin is a kyuuketsuki, a vampire. Sometime in the 20th century, a family of kyuketsuki took up residence in this Japanese town, Karin's family. There's her Mama, Papa, her younger sister Anju and her older brother Ren. Although they may be slightly disfunctional, they are a veyr careing and loving family. However, Karin is very different from her kyuketsuki kin, instead of sucking blood, she makes it and in huge quantities. As time goes on, ther level of blood in her system increases until she can no longer bear it. She must then either bite a human and inject them with the excess blood, or continue to let it build up until it come shooting from her nose in a massive nosebleed. Not only is she a blood maker, but she's also completely able to live in the daylight
Despite being an "un-vampire" Karin is still beloved by her family and treated as an equal by them, with the exclusion of Ren. Her entire life Karin has kept her families great secrect, never revealing, even to her closest friend Maki that she comes from a family of kyuuketsuki. Everything seems to be going pretty peacefully for Karin, until one fatefull day when the class recieves a new exchange student from the North, Usui Kenta. The moment Karin lays eyes on him, her blood begins to increase rappidly, causeing her to rush off to the bathroom, covering her nose, prepareing for another massive nosebleed. Whenever Usui gets even near Karin, her blood levels become unstable. Unnable to solve the problem herself, Karin seeks help from her family. Ren steps up, helping her to decifer her "taste in blood." Every vampire has a taste for a certain type of blood. For Karin's mother, its liars, for her father, proud people and for her brother, stress. After a vampire sucks the blood of a human, they loose whatever attribute it was that the attracts them. For example, after Ren drinks the blood of an extreemely stressed-out lady, she'll become completely relaxed and calm. After running into a woman about to commit suiicide, Karins blood begins to rapidly increase again. She bites the woman, and proveing Ren's suspicioun, she removes the womans sadness. In other words Karin's taste in blood is unhappiness and after injecting them with her own blood, they become full of energy and life. Finally, Karin understands that Usui is extreemely unhappy, and its that unhappiness which causes her blood to increase. Karin deciedes to do her best to make Usui as happy as possible without biting him. Since Usui is rather poor, she makes him home made bento lunches everyday and soon afterward, his mood seems to improve.
As the story continous, tension builds between Usui and Karin when he learns her secret; however, he vows to keep it under wrapps because his life goal is to be a model citizen. After a time, they both begint to realize they have feelings for each other and defy Karin's grandmother by forming a relationship between kyuuketsuki and Human. Another new exchange student arrives, Winner Sinclair, the vampire hunter who just happens to be nuts for Karin. One plot twist leads to another and a huge love polygon forms. Maki loves Winner, Winner loves Karin, Karin loves Usui and Usui loves her. What will happen between the couples? Can a human and a vampire ever really love each other?
