Daisuke Niwa is an average student in J.R High school. He's got a crush on Risa Harada, the prettiest girl in school he enjoys painting, nothing really odd...on the outside. Since he was little Dai-kun's Mother and Grandfather have been training him to become a great theif. There's not a day when Daisuke doesn't come home to a maze full of deadly traps. The story begins on the day of Daisuke's 14th birthday. Today is the day when he's finally going to be able to give Risa a letter of love, confessing his feelings for her. However, before he can even give the letter to her, Risa mentions just how great a friend Daisuke is to her, a friend and only a friend. Daisuke, downtrodden, makes his way home.

Later that night, Daisuke begins to go througha strange transformation. His hair grows longer and turns purple, he even gets taller. Frightened by all this, he asks his mother what in the world is going on. She explains, that on the 14th birthday of a buy from the Niwa clan, he becomes one with the legendary Art theif, Dark. The transformation begins when Daisuke starts feeling romantic, activating Dark's spirit in his DNA. Daisuke begs his mother to change him back but she tells him there's nothing she can do. The only way to be rid of Dark is to steal the Sacred Maiden. So that night, using Daisuke, using his new black wings, flies to the art museum and steals an art peice called "the sacred maiden." Once there, he is confronted by the police cheif, and fellow J.R High student, Satoshi Hiwatari. Daisuke, suddenly hears the voice of dark, and the two split and confuse Hiwatari enough to escape.

On the way home, Dark flies by the harada mansion and sees Risa. he starts to feel romantic again and beings to change back into Daisuke. Falling quickly, he lands next to Risa's twin sister, Riku, who starts to scream. In an attempt to shut her up, Dark kisses her, but by the time the kiss is finished, he's allready changed back into Daisuke. Riku is frightened by everything and starts to wonder why she saw Daisuke in that man. This is where the love triangle begins, for Risa, instantly falls for Dark when she's see's his picture on  the news. So, Daisuke likes Risa, Risa likes Dark, Dark likes Riku, Riku likes Daisuke!

Once home, Daisuke aks his parents if, since he has stolen the sacred maiden,  he will become Dark again. Unfortunatly, yes. In order to get rid of Dark, Daisuke must tell the girl he loves about Dark, and confess his feelings for her, If she accepts him, Dark will dissappear just as he has done for hundreds of years through the Niwa clan. Daisuke must steal the heart of his Sacred Maiden.

After rejection after rejection by Risa, Daisuke beings to fall for her sister, Riku.

Daisuke may seem like an ordinary Jr.High student, but really his alternate self is the legendary kaito Dark. The Niwa family has passed down Darks genes through their DNA for hundreds of years, and when a Niwa buy turns 14, he becomes the next phantom theif, or more like a vessel for him. Since Daisuke was little his grandfather trained him so that one day he could become Kaito Dark, which is seen as a honer in the Niwa clan, but all Daisuke wants to do is get Dark out of his head. The only way to do that is for Daisuke to confess his love to his "Sacred Maiden" and be accepted as both Daisuke and Dark.

Hiwatari is a rather quiet person going to the same JR.High as Daisuke. He's actually a genius who finished college a few years ago, yet went back into school to live a normal life. He's commander of teh police force trying to capture Dark. He's motives are deeper then the may at first appear for, inside Hiwatari is Krad, a homicidal version of Dark. Hiwatari must destroy Dark if he is to ever get rid of Krad. Hiwatari's curse comes from being a part of the Hikari clan, enemies of the Niwa's. Dark and Krad have been rivals for hundreds of years.
