National Locksmith magazine recently published and article exposing the way large, national companies trick consumers into thinking they are local. The prime method is to have a local phone number that forwards any calls to a phone in another part of the country. They have "locksmiths" that they contract who are in the general area but calling them "local" is quite a stretch.

Why is this important to you? Imagine calling a "local locksmith" that gives you a quote for the job you want done. Then, after he arrives he suddenly has a great deal of difficulty doing the job and must charge you more than estimated. Significantly more.

More blatently, they are known to do the job and then bill you for "extras" such as, trip charges, hardware upgrades, "serious problems" with your hardware, incorrect estimates that were given you by a "new" office person. Of course the extras are only revealed after the job is finished.

If you call the phone number they will completely support the "honest locksmith" in their employ. This is because they are getting a large percentage of the charges for calling the "local" guy who ripped you off.  If you ever call the number again for future service (I can't imagine why you would), you won't see the same "locksmith".
