Guyuan is a small city in the south of the Ningxia Province in Central China. The area is considerably poor and many families sacrifice the little money they do have to pay for the best education their children can obtain in the hope that they will be able to attend a university and make a better life for themselves.
As volunteer foreign English teachers, we realize the limtations of what we can accomplish against such entrendched poverty. However, there are ways which we we can improve the lives of our students in small ways. And we wish to try to do so.
And you can help, too. With so many causes out there to donate to, it's easy to dismiss this one as just another cause. But this is not a cause. This is not about fulfilling any social obligation. This is about friendship. It is our hope that with each donation you will be creating a relationship with a student.
Hopefully, the small gestures we can make will help maintain enthusiasm for education and allow students to develop bonds and friendships that transcend nationality or ethnicity.
As a very wise and compassionate woman once said, "we can do no great things, only small things with great love."
