Knockouts at Coushatta VIII

Diaz Pummels Cruz!

Saturday night at the Coushatta Casino and Resorts in Kinder, LA the 8th installment of “Knockouts At Coushatta” took place. This time Bayou Promotions brought out the big guns, as Team Diaz came to town.

In the main event big brother Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (28-0) took on Arthur Cruz (20-16-3) in a bout that was scheduled for 10 rounds. As soon as the opening bell sounded the 5,000 plus fans saw what they came to see, that being Juan Diaz throwing some serious punches. “Baby Bull” controlled the fight with his aggressiveness and volume punches. To this credit Arthur Cruz didn’t come to Kinder of be a punching bag as he tried to answer everything Diaz threw, but in round five Diaz’s body attack started to wear down Cruz, as he landed a flurry of punches highlighted by a left hook to the head that prompted referee Kenny Licata to stop the bout 1:44 into the round.

After the bout was stopped, Cruz was none to happy as he shouted “You still didn’t knock me down” to Diaz and his camp.

Broussard TKO’s Hammac!

In the local attraction “Bad” Chad Broussard (51-4) looked sharp as he beat Charles Hammac to a bloody pulp over 5 rounds. In the 3rd round Broussard connected with a uppercut to the face of Hammac that busted his nose, the bleeding was so bad that referee Russell Naquin called for time so the ringside doctor could check out Hammac’s nose. The bout went on, and Broussard cruised through round 4. Then in round 5, Hammac tired and Broussard came on strong, even staggering Hammac before the bell rang to close the round. In between rounds Hammac’s corner decided that their fighter had taken enough damage and threw in the towel, thus giving Broussard his 51st career win and his 5th in his last 5 fights.

Broussard will continue his string of activity as he is set to headline Bayou Promotions next boxing event on August 19 at the Argosy Casino in Baton Rouge, LA.

Harris Forces Henry to go the Distance!

Cruiserweight Chris Henry (6-0) stayed undefeated, but lost his much hyped knockout streak. His opponent Orlando, FL’s Vincent Harris (11-17-2) said he came to Kinder, LA to do just what he did. On the video screen before the fight he promised the crowd that he would go the distance. At times Henry looked like he had Harris on the verge of going down, but the cagy veteran Harris would go into survior mode, which made for a very dirty but interesting fight. In round 4 Henry scored with a right hook that hurt Harris, but Harris was able to hold on, but he held on a little too mucha as referee Bruce McDaniel was forced to take a point away from Harris.

When it was all said and done, all the judges were in agreement as they scored the bout the same 40-35, all for the undefeated prospect from Orange, TX, Chris Henry.

Younger Diaz Edges Trumble! The younger Diaz featherweight Jose Diaz (7-0) looked to add another notch to his career as he took on New Orleans, LA’s Steve Trumble (11-20). Diaz came on the aggressor, and looked to have controlled most of the fight, but the much traveled Trumble was in Diaz’s face every step of the way. Through the first 4 rounds Diaz won rounds with his relentless body attack. In round 5 and 6 Diaz started to fade, and Trumble took full advantage. Trumble started plodding forward and seemed to confuse Diaz, but it was too little too late for Trumble. After the scores were tallied, they added up to a majority decision for Jose Diaz. (59-55, 59-55 and 57-57). The gulfcoastboxing.com cards has Diaz winning 58-56.

Vela Decisions Contreras!

In her last bout Audrey Vela (6-1) of Austin, TX was on the wrong end of a 10 round split decision loss to IFBA super bantamweight champion Jackie Chavez (9-0). Tonight she got back on the winning side as she cruised her way to a 4 round unanimous decision over tough Mary Contreras (1-2). The first three rounds of the bout Vela threw and landed more punches than her counterpart, but in round 4 Contreras found a home for some well places body shots, which slowed down Vela, but it was not enough to effect the outcome of the bout. The judges had it 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37 all for the winner, Audrey Vela. Gulfcoastboxing.com had the bout scored 39-37 for Vela.

Alacron Wins Debut

In the much anticipated debut of Houston’s Genaro Alacron (1-0) stopped the gritty Mike Taylor (0-5) of Dallas, TX. Alacron came out looking to end things early, but Taylor’s heart and determination kept him in the bout. Taylor’s lack of punching kept him out of the winners circle. Alacron hurt Taylor in round three, and Taylor retreated to the ropes, as he did this, Alacron started picking his shots, after a few seconds of this referee Rick Exe had seen enough, he stopped the bout 1:56 into the round.
