Maskaev Pounds Navarre
Bayou Promotions brought out the big guns tonight, as the heavyweights took the main stage. One of the best heavyweights in boxing, “The Big O” Oleg Maskaev (30-5) took on local journeyman Quinn Navarre (30-13-1). Oleg showed why he is rated number 5 by the WBC as he showcased his skills, mostly the jab in round one. In round 2 he started showing a little power as he caught Navarre trying to come in on him. In round 3, Oleg used his jab to set up a straight right hand that put Navarre down and out. Referee Russel Naquin waived the bout off as Navarre could not answer the 10 count. Gulfcoastboxing.com had the chance to speak with Maskaev’s manager Dennis Rappaport, he told us, “We are looking to keep busy, we are tentatively scheduled to fight in the Ukraine on February 12." When asked if he was pleased with the result of Maskaev’s bout with Navarre, he said “It was just to keep busy. I told Oleg to box him, to get some rounds, but he said he (Navarre) pissed him off .”
Anani Stalks Laracuente!
Eastsideboxing.com called this fight “a fight that should be televised”. The word going around the Kinder, LA was that no one wanted to fight Sumya Anani (25-1-1), and anyone watching the fight could see why. The woman who stepped up tonight was Puerto Rican, Belinda “Brown Sugar” Laracuente (25-6-2). Anani started off the bout going forward and didn’t stop doing so until she retained her IBA welterweight title. A nasty cut in round 1 put the fight in jeopardy, but it was controlled by Anani’s cut man. When it was all said and done the cards read like this, 100-90, 99-91, 97-93. Gulfcoastboxing.com scored the bout 97-93.
Broussard Gets Revenge on Martinez
In one of the most anticipated fight of the night, Lafayette, LA native “Bad” Chad Broussard (46-4) destroyed Moises Martinez (7-12). The fight went the same way as the first fight, Broussard fought off the ropes, and he counterpunched the much slower Martinez, but this time, Broussard was a little more controlled, and protected his body a lot better. In the first 2 rounds, Broussard landed uppercuts and hooks off the ropes, as Martinez tried to pound the body. In round 3 Broussard still fought with his back to the ropes, but landed a right hook the stunned Martinez. Broussard then got off the ropes and went to work, and he landed 3 hooks, the last of which put Martinez down. Moises got up at the count of 9, but was still very wobbled and did not have his legs under him. Referee Bruce McDaniel let the fight continue although he probably shouldn’t have, because seconds later Broussard landed a straight right that put Martinez out. McDaniel finally called off the beating, then the doctors and Martinez’s team quickly came into the ring. Martinez did leave the ring on his own power.
Baby Boy Handles Greeley
In a super middleweight battle, John Vargas (15-1) made his Louisiana debut as he pounded out a 6 round decision over Monroe, LA’s Anthony Greeley (5-12-2). Vargas was in control from the start, as he used his jab and right hook to keep Greeley off balance. In round 3, Vargas started going to the body and it paid off as he scored a knock down. In round 4, Greeley had his best round as he started moving and landing his jab and straight right hand. It almost looked like he had Vargas confused. In round 5, Vargas took control again and boxed the fatigued Greeley. In round 5 it was more of the same as Vargas landed at will, Greeley was on the verge of being stopped, but showed tons of heart as he kept coming towards Vargas. The final cards read, 60-53, 59-54, 59-54.
Prevost Edges Aqulia
“Candyman” Blake Prevost (2-0-1) looked to step up in competition as he took on veteran Miguel “El Toro” Aquila (10-33-2). Prevost tried to box the more experienced Aquila and it seemed to work for the most part as Aquila mostly threw one punch at a time. The best round of the fight was round 3, as both fighters wrestled each other to the ground. Then towards the end of the round Aquila landed a wild right hand, which was one the only clean punches landed in the fight. When it was all said and done the scorecards read as follows, 39-36, 39-36 and 38-37 all for your winner, Blake Prevost. Blake’s manager Kerry Daigle told gulfcoastboxing.com that Prevost’s next fight will be February 12 in Laurel, MS, the opponent has yet to be named.
Ashworth Cruises Over Allen
In a bout that was a replacement bout, Lake Charles, LA’s Roy Ashworth (2-1) took a 4 round decision over Ron “Most Wanted” Allen. Both fighters started off this bout swinging some very wild shots. Towards the middle of the round, Allen slipped and fell to one knee in the middle of the ring, but that did not stop Ashworth as he hit him while he was down. That prompted referee Bruce McDaniel to take a point from Ashworth. The rest of the fight was all Ashworth. Allen was content with laying on the ropes, and Ashworth was content with using Allen as a punching bag. The most exciting round of the night happened in round 3 as both guys came out with their guns blazing. In the end all the judges saw it the same, 39-36 all for Ashworth.
