Wood wins dirty fight

In the main event Frank Wood (25-3) put his Mid-South heavyweight title on the line against Rafael Pedro (19-4-1). This fight started off well for Pedro, as he jabbed Wood and looked to be in control. In round 2, Wood upped the tempo and started to back Pedro up, as he did that Pedro started to grab, at the end of round 2 is where this fight started going downhill. As the :10 second bell rang, both fighter flurried to try to steal the round, as the bell sounded, Wood threw a left hook, that landed after the bell, Pedro retaliated with a punch of his own, and the fighters had to be separated by referee Fred Steinwinder. Pedro jabbed his way through round 3, anytime Wood would come close, Pedro would tie him up and lean on him, which seemed to frustrate Wood. In round 4, Wood pressured his way in and landed a slew of clean shots. Again shots were thrown after the bell sounded. In round 5, things got out of hand, the tiring Pedro held at every opportunity he had. Towards the middle of the round, the fighters feet got tangeld up and both fighters went the the ground. While on the ground, Pedro landed a right hand to the jaw of Wood. At that point referee Fred Steinwinder had seen enough and declared the Frank Wood the winner by disqualification.

After the fight Gulfcoastboxing.com had chance to talk to Mid-South heavyweight champion Frank Wood (25-3). Wood said “I prepared properly for a tough fight, and I still had a lot left in the tank.” He also went on to say that “the guy with the bigger heart was not going to be denied”. When asked about a rematch, Wood said “rematch whenever he wants, despite the dirty tactics, but it is up to Brian Young and the powers that be.” Wood said “I’m moving up the ladder and looking for bigger fights. I am hoping that promoters see this win, and hopefully that gets me to the bigger fights”, when asked what was next on the horizon.

Strickland KO's Johnson

In the co-feature, Slidell’s Dupre Strickland (15-1-1) knocked out late sub Pete Johnson (2-2) in the fifth round of their scheduled six round bout. Strickland dominated with his speed, he used his jab to snap the head back of Johnson. In round 2, Johnson tried to come inside, Strickland let him, and used to some very nice uppercuts to win the round. In rounds 3 and 4 it was all Strickland, using his speed to batter the inexperienced Johson. In round 5, Strickland upped the tempo and Johnson could not handle it. Strickland upped the body attack, which Johnson could not handle either. Strickland pressed Johnson, and 1:23 into the round caught him with a nice right hook to the body, that sent Johnson down and out. The medics were called in to tend to the hurt Johnson. After about 5 mintues, Johnson was sat down on a stool, and then walked to the locker room on his own power.

Johnson stops Daughtry!

In what was the fight of the night, undefeated prospect “Voodoo Man” John Johnson (7-0) continued his winning ways, as he scored a third round knockout of tough veteran Charles “Head Hunter” Daughtry (9-32-2). Johnson came out in round one looking to get the quick KO, but Daughtry had other plans as he stood in and traded with the more powerful Johnson. To Daughtry’s credit he did land a few shots on Johnson, but the “Voodoo Man’s” pressure was too much for Daughtry to take. In round two Daughtry began to tire and Johnson started to land more punches. In round three it was more of the same, as the exhausted Daughtry played to the crowd, but was caught with a looping right hand that put him down, seconds later the a left hook landed that put Daughtry down and out 2:03 into round three.

Lindsey pounds Ibanez

Columbus, MS’s Cassandra Lindsey (1-2) got the first victory of her career and she stopped Tiffany Ibanez (2-4-1) in the first round of their scheduled four round bout. Ibanez came out in her customary “Hooters” boxing trunks, which delighted the crowd, but when the fight started, it was a different story. Lindsey came out and landed one punch on the nose of Ibanez. That punched caused Ibanez to turn around and quit. That gave Lindsey a TKO victory. Announcer JD Lyons accouned that Ibanez had broken her nose earlier in the week.

Wolfe eats prey!

The woman took the stage next. Super middleweight superstar Anne Wolfe (19-1) had no trouble in taking out veteran Genevia Buckhalter (2-12-1). Buckhalter came out as the aggressor and landed a few on Wolfe, but after being hit the first time, it was all but over with. Wolfe started stalking the much bigger Buckhalter and landed two straight right hands that landed flush on the chin of her opponent. The referee stepped in as Buckhalter’s golves touched the mat. Wolfe came right back at her hurt foe and landed 5 unanswered punches and the referee stepped in for good this time, ending the bout. With the win, Wolfe wins her 19th bout, and is still looking for that mega fight with Lalia Ali.

Whitfield hammer Lucas!

The night started out with a bang, as a rarity in southern boxing took place. A battle of 122lb fighters. Prize Fight Boxing’s star Rayonta Whitfield (5-0) put a beating on the less skilled Jorge Lucas (0-2). Whitfield put Lucas on the canvas in every round, but to Lucas’s credit he did show a lot of heart as he got up each time, except in the last round when he was saved by the bell. When it was all said and done, the scorecards read 40-34, 40-33 and 40-32.
