The Petroleum Club and Mike Corbell’s Knockout Promotions presentsed Black Tie Boxing, Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at the Petroleum Club in Shreveport, LA. This was an black tie event, only 100 or so tickets were sold. The night turned out to be a great night of fighting, thrown in with a little boxing.
Johnson KO’s Barbier
In what put an exclamation point on a very exciting night of fights “Gentlemen” James Johnson (17-12) scored a first round knockout of former kick boxer Anthony Barbier (0-1). Johnson started the first round very cautious, then stuck his jab and went to work on the body of the 215lb Barbier. Johnson scored with a jab, then followed it with a right hook to the body that sent Barbier down to the canvas, referee Russell Naquin reached the count of 10 at 2:33 seconds of round number one.
Marks Beats Bigger Taylor
In the co-feature, up and coming Zane Marks (2-2) scored a unanimous decision over Shreveport’s Johnny “Bad Boy” Taylor (4-6). Marks came out with guns blazing and landed at will on the older Taylor. In round 2 Taylor came out looking to use his weight advantage and press Marks against the ropes. The strategy paid off for the fight part of the round, then halfway in, Marks got off the ropes and landed a vicious body shot that put Taylor down. Taylor complained that it was low, referee Bruce McDaniel issued the count regardless. In what turned out to be “round of the night,” both fighters came out looking to score the KO, neither were successful. Round 4 Marks got on his bike and stayed away from Taylor. It would not make a difference as all the judges saw it for the Baton Rouge native Zane Marks. (39-36, 39-36, 38-37)
Temple Stops Stephens with Body Shots
Monroe, LA’s John Temple came into the fight with Shreveports Jerrick Stephens (0-1) a heavy favorite, and as the fight progressed it showed why. Stephens came out in round one firing jabs at the much shorter Temple, but towards the end of the round Temple started to dig in with body shots that seem to take the life out of Stephens. It was more of the same in round 2. At 1:48, Temple landed the final body blow of the fight, it put Stephens down and out. With the win Temple gets his record back to the .500 mark at 6-6-1.
Prevost DRAWS with Greeley
In what looked like a mismatch on paper, turned out to be anything but. One of the most decorated amateurs to ever come out of the Marines, Blake Prevost (1-0) seemed like he was supposed to blow out Monroe’s Anthony Greeley (5–11-2), but someone for got to tell Greeley. Prevost looked to coast in round one as Greeley sat back and tried to counter unsuccessfully. In round 2 Greeley upped the pace of the fight and it looked like he had Prevost in trouble on a few occasions. In round 3 Prevost caught wind and started going to the body that looked to take the steam out of Greeley. Greeley went back to countering in round 4, but this time he was successful in doing so. When the scores were tallied up, the scorecards read 39-37 (Prevost), 39-37 (Greeley), 38-38. Gulfcoastboxing.com scored the bout a draw also.
O’Neil Squeaks Past Jenkins
“Fast” Eddie O’Neil started off the fight with a barrage of punches, but Jenkins defense got him through the first round pretty easily. The second round was a different story, O’Neil was landing punches at will and came very close to taking Jenkins down. O’Neil dominated the first 2:30 seconds of the round, but Jenkins fought back in the last 30 seconds of the round and almost scored a knockout for himself. From then on, Jenkins landed his left hook at will and the fight turned into a total brawl. The early dominance by O’Neil was enough to pull out the win on all the judges’ scorecards, 39-37, 39-37, 38-37.
Debut Deplechian Pounds on Spears
In what was a total blow out, Jeremy Duplechian (1-0) won a 4 round decision over Rodney Spears. Churchpoint, LA’s Duplechian reportedly had a 103-3 amateur career, and it showed as he beat the durable Spears from pillar to post. Duplechain followed manager Kerry Daigle orders of getting rounds in as Jeremy had Spears out on his feet on more than a few occasions throughout the fight. The judges and Gulfocastboxing.com all scored the bout the same 40-36 across the board.
Hometown Aaron Beats Blanco
Former kickboxing champion Donny Aaron (1-0) made his professional debut in his hometown of Shreveport, LA as he defeated Tyler, TX’s Felix Blanco (0-1), who was also making his pro debut. Blanco came out with guns blazing, but his stamina caught up with him in rounds 3 and 4 as Aaron started landing punches at will. The judges saw it 40-36, 39-37, 39-37
Gulfcoastboxing.com would like the thank Knockout Promotions and Mike Corbell for everything.
