Dealing with a Loss

What to do when a good friend dies

When a guinea pig dies it is absolutly horrible. When a cat or dog dies most people will accept crying and greiving but unforunately there is little sympathy for someone crying over a deceased rodent from the general public. Why? More people have cats and dogs than guinea pigs, they look at rodents as dumb animals, it is hard to fall in love with a rodent, they think. But You are right to cry, crying is never wrong, but don't restrict yourself from getting a new guinea pig.

A new guinea pig will not replace your old one, it will simply find another place in your heart. Never underestimated how much room you have to cater for in your heart because the answer is simple, you have how much space you want.Don't rush yourself, give yourself time, a general rule that you shoud use for all stressful and tragic matters is to be kind to yourself, give yourself time to recover but don't give yourself too long that you become lost in your head. There will be a time when you tell yoursel: I can move on. Moving on is not forgetting your guinea pig it is leaving that place in your heart for him/her but building more room, it is letting yourself be normal again. We all grieve in our own way but bear in mind there are some things you have to do.

Firstly you wil have to dispose of the passed away, it is up to you how you do this. Secondly clean the house out thouroughly so that your other guinea pigs can also move on. Allow yourself rest and peace of mind. Now for the above i have been assuming it is an old guinea pig that has moved to a better place but if it is a baby that was neglected or a young guinea pig don't keep telling yourself it was your fault, ultimately it was no ones fault, but a lot of these things you are going to have to learn yourself, you will have to learn from the experience. Death is not an easy thing to learn about especially if a guinea pig died during pregnancy. This os probably the hardest death to face, i haven't been in this situation but i can imagine the horror and pain. Ultimately it was not your fault! Bear this in mind because it is true.

Now i know this site was meant to be light-hearted but i believe that there should be a serious edge to everything, imagine this site like those cheeses with white round the outside, there's the information that you need then the soft gooey cheese with all the fun bits inside, the easy stuff. I imagine guinea pigs also like that, the serious stuff and then the fun stuff, that's why you've got to learn to cut the cheese, no not cut your guinea pig up, by cutting the cheese i mean you've got to learn how to handle, cater for and look after your guinea pig but there will be a time when the cheese expires, and that is the time you are facing.
