          Step 7 - Maintenance

Cleaning

Guinea pigs are cute but they are messy, sometimes depending on their housing and bedding, they can be cleaned every other day with a spot clean the day between. Generally most guinea pigs need cleaning daily. For stubborn urine stains, white vinegar left on the spot for an hour will remove it.

Newspaper with a layer of hay or newspaper with vet bed then hay is best.

Cleaning food bowls and water bottles.

Food bowls should be cleaned and refilled daily, hot soapy water is best or if you keep a spare one bung it in the dishwasher.

For water bottles we use a bottle brush, we also disinfect them by soaking them in white vinegar. You can use cotton buds to clean the inside of the spout. For larger bottles with stubborn stains you can fill them a ¼ ways with dry rice and vinegar and shake it well, soak over night with vinegar and rinse well the next day.
