I have embarked on my newest adventure of becoming a Perinatal Educator and arming women and families with the knowledge they require to not only have an empowering birth experience, but the tools they may need to foster an open relationship with their care-providers. My job as a Perinatal Educator is not to teach you to become better patients but to become better consumers, to ask the questions and get the answers every step of the way.

I will be offering classes as of January 2008, so please sign up. Also note that as of September 2007, I will also be available to provide private classes (in your home or mine) throughout the GTA, Durham and Markham. The birth of a baby is a miraculous event, one that is filled with wonder and often uncertainty and sometimes families feel less than satisfied with their experience. Why? Maybe it’s because they just didn’t get the right information, or that the information they received was lost in the heat of the moment, but whatever the case it can be different for you.

Come join a childbirth preparation class that offers evidence, non-fear based approach. You will learn through interactive demonstrations, hands-on practice and some very practical take home information. This information will be used to open the lines of communication between you and your care-provider and to enhance your birth experience through education and empowerment. These instructional classes are geared to everyone and it is my hope that by the end of our 8 weeks that we have created a community where people can continue to learn and grow together long after the births of their babies.

Amanda Burke is a Certified Birth Doula (DONA international and the HypnoBirthing Institute) and Perinatal Educator ( Ontario Perinatal School ). She has been attending birth since 2005 and has truly seen the wide terrain that comes with birth. She has been a driving force in her community by helping women and couples get their best birth experience through education and empowerment. She also works as the Toronto Representative with DoulaCARE Inc, through mentoring, support, networking and advocacy she has helped many build their birthing businesses and find the tools they needed to best serve their clients. She is also a mother, wife and long time member of Girl Guides of Canada.

Many of us have been taught that birth without pain, fear and intervention is not possible. Guess what? It is time to change their minds!
