" Cockroaches Live In Space Hotel"

August 12, 2006

One month ago scientist sent up an inflatable hotel into space. They also sent up other things  to occupy the hotel. One of which was Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches! The scientist also included Mexican jumping beans, toys and household items. The Mexican jumping beans are now growing in  the inflatable hotel. The space hotel is called Genesis-I. Bigelow Aerospace is working on the development of hotels in space in the future. The hotel has showed a very slow leak, but not enough to notice. There is a technical problem. A glitch makes things difficult on Earth to get live data, or find the antennas. Genesis-I will last five years, then burn up! In 2007 Bigelow Aerospace will launch Genesis-II, and it will be swank compared to Genesis-I! They plan to carry scorpions and ant farms, and they will have their own self contained oxygen.

"Scientist Test Telepathy"

August 12, 2006

Scientist at the University of Manchester/Computer Science and Psychological Division have set out to test Telepathy. They have rounded up 100 people from friends, work colleagues, and family to perform a study group on Telepathy. Scientist are testing links between two people through a computer. Two participants at a time wore a 3D helmet and a electronic glove. They maneuvered through a computer generated world, picking a computer generated object and communicating this object to their partner, in another room. The receiver, of the two subjects then was presented with objects. They had to choose the one the partner was communicating to them. All findings will be published in early 2007. Scientist believe results could prove to be fascinating!

"NASA'S Stero Mission"

July 18, 2006

Article Below From  NASA

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/stereo/main/index.html

The Mission
Coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, are powerful eruptions that can blow up to 10 billion tons of the sun's atmosphere into interplanetary space. These events can trigger severe magnetic storms when they collide with Earth. These storms can damage communications satellites and cause electrical power outages.

The STEREO mission will provide a totally new perspective on solar eruptions by capturing images of coronal mass ejections and background events from two observatories at the same time. STEREO's twin observatories will be offset from one another in orbit. One observatory will be placed "ahead" of the Earth in its orbit, and using a series of lunar swingbys, the other will travel "behind." Just as the slight offset between your eyes provides you with depth perception, this placement will allow the STEREO observatories to obtain 3-D images of the sun.

Using this unique 3-D imagery, scientists will be able to examine the structure of these important events, and learn more about their fundamental nature and origin.

July 13, 2006

University of Texas graduate students use nanotechnology to develop a tiny flag! The flag resembles the United States flag, but is 10 smaller than a human hair. The flag is only seen through a certain microscope. Moon Kim engineering professor says the flag is 2 dimensional. He hopes this project will lead to 3 dimensional projects. The flag is 7 microns tall, and was transferred to a silicon wafer using a machine, that follows a bitmap image. The flag and pole were cut using a micro laser. The students worked on another flag even smaller than the United States resembled flag! They entered the flag in the Guinness Book Of World Records, but it was rejected for the time being. Guinness Book has no equipment that can view the flag. The students says they will try them again, at a later date.

"The Upgrade Of A Blimp"

July 10, 2006

The new airship far succeeds the blimp! With all the new colors, of the airships and the different styles, they are truly the next wave of blimp. There new uses are extraordinary also, they can do many things. The TSI SA 60M.A. can advertise, an do surveillance up to 10,000 feet. There are also M.A.R.S. LAA which can reach altitudes of 15,000 feet and M.A.R.S. MAA which can reach altitudes of 20,000 feet. The primary goal of both is surveillance and communication. A high altitude version of M.A.R.S. is in the works, and it will reach altitudes of 65,000 feet. All have primary goals. 1# Surveillance 24 hours a day in many environments. 2#Replace destroyed or old technology through a wireless communication platform. 3# Command and control all ground communication. Cyber Defense Systems along with Techsphere Systems International, LLC  has plans to work with a multitude of businesses and state departments, including the United States Government. Cyber Defense Systems says Homeland Security could use these airships for emergency telephone and broadband recovery, also to monitor our borders and harbors. The use of airships would work good with customs agents to track drugs in the United States. Airships could also bring third world countries forward in the technology department. Airships could be used to aid in a major crisis such as 911. Another company that provides some of the most advanced airships is 21ST Century Airships. Their airships provide for quite the ride for a site seer or pilot. The ships have low noise, and can take off from land or water! They to can provide many uses for military or businesses. They have a futuristic appearance with many colors an pictures. In conclusion, airships will be a thing of the future, and when you look up to the sky what you think is a UFO might just be an airship.

"Discovery Launch Worries"

July 3, 2006

The shuttle has been delayed again. It seems there is a 5 inch crack near the cooling system where foam fell off. A piece of foam was found laying on the ground! NASA believes it fell from the liquid oxygen feedline.

Discovery has been scrub again today, due to weather. The next date will be our Independence Day of July 4th!

July 1, 2006

Well Discovery has been scrubbed for July 1 2006. The shuttle will have a new target date of July 2, 2006 at 3:26 pm EST. They have until July 13, 2006 to launch Discovery. There was a problem this morning with one of the small thrusters, but all is well now.

June 22, 2006

There have been ups and downs trying to get Shuttle Discovery ready for the next launch, on July 1st. They were worried a faulty electronics box might delay the launch. They have vowed to repair, and move along on schedule. NASA's top safety officer still has concerns, even though he will not restrict the shuttle from lifting off! Both Brian O'Conner(NASA safety chief) and Chris Scolese(chief engineer) have not endorsed the next launch! They are still contemplating the redesign, of the fuel tank. This has been the main problem resulting in the Colombia disaster of 2003, and problems from the last launch. NASA administrator Michael Griffin have listened to both, but decided to launch Discovery. Concluding, if there is a problem the crew can use the space station as a place of refuge, until they are rescued.

June 27, 2006

Using the space station as a place of refuge might be a problem for Discovery astronauts. It seems that the space station is running out of room. Since the crash of 2003 with Discovery there has been more stored on the station, than taken away. This is due to the two and a half year lull in launches. The Russians have taken off small amounts of trash in their pods, but things are collectively piling up. The new launch of Discovery will take back waste, but more will be dropped of in supplies, than what is being returned! The size of the space station is compared to a three bedroom home. In 2007 a new room will be added, but until then it is very crowded. Thomas Reiter an astronaut onboard the space station says "more space is being taken up by items, rather than being used for personal living space." A spacewalk was done without all the equipment due to the 18,000 items on board. They could not find their experimental sample bag! In conclusion, if the new crew on Discovery has to stay aboard the space station it will not make for a comfortable place of refuge.

"The Little Spies In The Sky"

June 26, 2006

Unmanned aerial vehicles are becoming  popular, for government use. There are many uses for these little aerial vehicles. The SkySheer is in testing stages, for the Los Angeles Police Department. SkySheer designed by Octatron, Inc. looks like a glider with a larger wing span, of 6.5 feet. This unmanned aerial vehicle will monitor people of interest, from the sky. Hence the name SkySheer! This little glider weighs a little more than 3 pounds, flies in increments of  45-60 minutes at a time. SkySheer can climb 250 feet high, and has a thermal camera which can provide a nighttime view, for the Los Angeles Police Department. The glider is collapsible, so it makes for easy storage. These little gliders do not come cheap 30,000 dollars, for each unit. This isn't the first little gadget making its debut. North Carolina also has their own little friend. The Gaston County Police Department has CyberBUG designed by CyberDefense Systems. This glider flies higher than SkySheer. CyberBUG flies up to 1,300 feet, and has a prerecorded flight plan. This means the police department has to check local flight plans before sending CyberBUG, on its mission. Then there is a new addition, on the scene. OVIWUN a project by Trek Aerospace. OVIWUN is remote controlled with duel motors. This is the "cream of the crop," of an unmanned vehicle! The aerial vehicle can climb up to 5,500 feet. Cruising at 31 mph it can only fly for 20 minutes. The use of this unmanned aerial glider serves the military best, thus allowing it to go into dangerous areas.  OVIWUN is equipped with a camera and sensors making it easier to take a look around. In conclusion, the glider you see in the park while taking a jog or playing with your kids, may just be that little spy in the sky!

"Remote Controlled Sharks"

June 24, 2006

Research funding by the Pentagon to DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is providing new technology, to are ocean friend the shark. DARPA wants to use neural implants to study the way sharks move, smell, and sense their environment. These electrodes will act as a controlling agent, thus controlling the sharks pattern. The future for sharks may aid in them becoming "super spies." Capable of following vessels and detecting chemicals. The first test outside the laboratory will be, off the coast of Florida, with blue sharks. Communications with the sharks will be made from acoustic towers. These towers send sonar signals up to 187 miles away. DARPA is working on brain implants for sharks, to determine which neurons in the shark cause their scent! DARPA could use this to manipulate the shark, for further surveillance work. Scientist think this could eventually lead to implants, that could control a prosthetic limb, and possibly overcome paralysis.

"Solar Maximum Of 2012"

June 15, 2006

As of March 10, 2006 the "Solar Minimum" has arrived. This means sunspots are at a minimum. Depending on who you ask Mausumi Dikpati(National Center of Atmospheric Research) or David Hathaway ( National Space & Science Technology Center) we will see the next "Solar Maximum" around 2010 to 2012. This will be the most intense Solar Max since 1958. The sunspot cycle will be at a 30 to 50 percent increase. In 1958 Northern Lights were seen in Mexico. We did not have the technology in 1958 we have today. This technology could be highly affected. Solar Maximums are hard to predict says Dikpati. The Sun has a conveyor belt just as Earth does. The belt is a current of electrically-conducting gas. This belt moves in a loop from the suns equator, to the suns poles. This conveyor belt controls the cycles of sunspots. It takes 40 to 50 years for the belt to make a complete loop. The faster the belt travels the more magnetic fields it picks up, thus being redispursed in the next Solar Max. Sun spots could start appearing as early as this year.

"Robots Can Feel"

June 12, 2006

Can robots feel? You bet!  A touch sensor has been developed that matches the human finger. This will allow the robot to feel objects. A thin layer on the sensor is made of gold and semiconducting nanoparticles, which are produced from a solution allowing the feeling of shapes. This may be the next way in fighting cancer. Being able to feel, the robot will be able to detect cancer cells from normal cells during surgery. You can read more in Science Magazine.

"The Near Collision On Jupiter"

credit: NASA,ESA,I.dePater and M.Wong(Universite of California Berkeley)

June 11, 2006

Planet Jupiter is in for a bumpy ride over weeks to come. The Great Red Spot (storm#1) is going to collide with Oval BA or Red Spot Jr (storm#2). Great Red Spot is as wide as earth itself, Red Spot Jr. is half that size. Both storms blow with wind speeds of 350 mph. July 4th of this year is their closest approach to each other. The storms outer bands will pass each other, making this a very close call! Amy Simon -Miller of The Goddard Space Flight Center, are monitoring these storms. Great Red Spot and Red Spot Jr. pass each other every 2 years. In previous years these storms passed each other unaltered. This year Simon-Miller says things might change. Red Spot Jr. may lose its color, due to how close they will be to each other. Red Spot Jr. wasn't always red, in 2006 astronomers notice a change. A vortex formed inside the storm making it the same color as The Great Red Spot. Researchers seem to think the storm was growing stronger. There is a theory, the red color from the main storm comes from drudging up material from Jupiters atmosphere.  Lifting the storm above the highest clouds, where ultraviolet rays turn chromophores(color changing compound) red. Red Spot Jr. had the same thing happen when it became as strong, as The Great Red Spot. However, the brush between the two could cause Jr. to change color.  Red Spot Jr. may become white again. This will be due to The Great Red Spots push over Red Spot Jr.  Making the counterclockwise rotation over Jr. thus, slowing it down and reversing the process.

"Vortex Found Off West Australian Coast"

June 04, 2006

A massive vortex has been found off the West Australian coast. The vortex seems to be sucking fish larve into it. This could affect the surrounding climate. A team of scientist from institutions that are Australian, French, Spanish and American discovered the vortex.  Scientist  have a ten member team led by Dr. Anya Waite from UWA(University of Western Australia Murdoch University.) The vortex is 200 km in diameter and 1000m deep, and was created by current movement down the coast. The vortex is visible from space.  Dr.Waite says the climate above the vortex is different, it feels like the tropics. The vortex is moving warm current to cooler current. This means it is changing the heat budget of the region. Dr. Waite says there is no danger to people boating, but the change is felt in that area.

June 01, 2006

Eight new creatures found in a cave located within the premise of a cement factory in Ramle, Israel . The cave is approximately 1.5 miles wide and 30 feet deep. Researchers must crawl and climb ropes to explore the cave. Four of the creatures were found in the lake that is within the cave, the other four found in the terrain of the cave. Of the four species found in the lake, two were saltwater crustaceans the other two were freshwater crustaceans. This suggest they arrived at different times from different places! This cave has a unique source of energy due to the sulfur in the water. Thus synthesizing bacteria and creating a plethora of nutrition for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, in the cave. The species have been sent to Israel and other places for further study. It seems the species are millions of years old!
