Candy Girl: The one and only

Throughout the game of rap, there has been a consistent history of rappers who put up a front in order to make themselves appear to be something they are really not. If you’re looking for one of those artists, I suggest you go elsewhere. Still, if you want someone who will keep you moving, and who will keep you hopeful than you should definitely check out Candy Girl.

For starters Candy Girl is a dream chaser, who is not only chasing her dream today, but she has a never say die attitude. “The fact that I have a dream motivates and inspires me to keep going, I want to be famous, and I have a lot to say, and the fact that I want it so bad is my inspiration,” said Candy Girl. She would then continue on with some valuable advice. “Never give up, because the day you give up, could have been the day you would have made it,” said Candy Girl.

Yet, many people wonder, how is it that an artist comes up with a name like Candy Girl? “I hustled over 3,500 items of candy in high school to pay for studio time to make my first CD/mix-tape; "one Mic one Girl one Dream," said Candy Girl. Ok so she’s got the name, she’s got the dream, but how far does she hope to go? “I want to be famous, I want my music and talent to be heard, and I will do what it takes to get there,” said Candy Girl. With that ambition came some advice from Candy Girl. “Don’t be afraid to say how you feel, and be you, no matter what everyone else is rapping about,” said Candy Girl.

As a female rapper it can be hard, but Candy Girl hopes to bring another female voice to the game, and she’s going to do it her way. If you want more information on Candy Girl check her out at: www.myspace.com/candygirlmuzic and while you’re there you can listen to her music and check out her upcoming show dates. Also, keep it here as we’ll keep it sweet, and keep it real, and I’ll keep you posted with the latest and greatest about Candy Girl; a star on the rise doing it her way, and making it work.

Artist Review: Mary J. Blige

There are some artists who talk the talk, but they don’t bother trying to live it. Then, there’s Mary J. Blige. With a sound and attitude that is uniquely her own Mary J. Blige has always worked hard to stay at the top of her game, under any circumstances. She has overcome a lot on a personal level, and that has helped her tremendously when it comes to being professionally successful.

Still, the point of this is not to focus on her personal battles and demons, but instead I will make some recommendations as to what music of hers you should check out and listen to. Some of my favorite Mary J. Blige hits include: No More Drama, I can love you, I’m going down, Be without you, and the No More Drama remix. These hits and more are what make Mary J. Blige the star she is today.

Also, it’s all about talent with Mary J. Blige. There are artists who have come and gone, and who will always remain one hit wonders, but Mary J. Blige has shown the world that she has staying power. Now, the only thing left is to wonder what’s next for this superstar who always has and always will shine.

A Flint artist you’ll never forget

Flint, Michigan is known to the general public for many things. Some of those things are good, and some are bad, but what’s most important is that Flint can and does represent with its musical talent. Furthermore, it was when I had the chance to hear the sounds of rapper Etrnalee that I truly knew what Flint could bring to the table from a rap perspective.

Before we get into Etrnalee and her sound, it’s important to note her reasons for getting into the rap game in the first place. “Nothing really drove me into rapping, I just love music, and when I was young a lot of things happened in my life,” said Etrnalee who started writing more and more when she was younger because no one listened to her feelings. “I started writing poetry, and then I discovered rap music, and I listened to how rappers would pour their hearts out into their songs, and no one could tell them it was wrong,” said Etrnalee who also enjoyed rap because people actually listened to every word that the rap artists were saying. Still, aside from being heard or even admired, Etrnalee felt a deeper connection to rap music. “I wanted nothing more than that feeling of freedom, and to be somebody with a voice, because it was finally something in my life that truly made me happy,” said Etrnalee.

Thus, rap is Etrnalee’s true passion, and it makes her happy, but how hard is it to make it in today’s rap game? “Yeah, it’s hard to make it in the rap game, but that’s why they call it a game, because it’s about how hard you push and keep pushing in spite of all the hardships that life throws at you,” said Etrnalee. Aside from pushing and the challenge of making it in the rap game, Etrnalee also knows that there are certain stereotypes that many rap artists face. “Some people look at me, being a shapely white female, and they walk out without even listening to my performance, and I don’t care, but yes it does make me angry,” said Entrnalee, who in spite of the ignorant judgments, feels that things like that only make her push harder.

With pushing harder, and drive comes passion, and that’s what Etrnalee brings to the table with her performances. Yet, where does that passion come from? “Everything I have been through in my life inspires my art, because I have a very strong emotional background,” said Etrnalee. Speaking of life, Etrnalee knows what it means to be an artist who has a family, a work life, and to have to still find time to produce and make her music come to life. “Finding time to write, usually involves lack of sleep, because I am engaged and I do have a family, and right now money’s tight for studio time, because I can’t even afford the dollar menu for my little girl,” said Etrnalee who said that she has been very fortunate to get help from other musicians like Grip Manson of Beefy Entertainment, DJPC, NorthernLakes Entertainment, and Roach.

Etrnalee is currently working on some new projects that are going to be out real soon. “I am remaking my first single; EtrnaLee Me and that song is a collaboration with Grip Manson of Beefy Entertainment,” said Etrnalee who also hopes to finish her first album; I have Arrived. Aside from her album you can catch Etrnalee in the Flint area, and with more shows here in Detroit, as she looks to continue to head this way. Furthermore, you can also contact Etrnalee at: etrnalee@yahoo.com or etrnalee@gmail.com and also feel free to contact lisajorlando@michentertainmentlaw.com for more information about Etrnalee.

Lastly, also check out Etrnalee at: http://www.myspace.com/1etrnalee ,  http://www.detroitrap.com/, and http://www.betarecords.com/etrnalee

When it comes to the reactions I got from Etrnalee’s performance last Friday night at Lipsticks Lounge, it was nothing but thumbs up. Still, aside from basic cheering, I had the same things said to me over and over again; that girl can spit and she can bring it like no other. So, if you’re in the mood to hear one of Flint’s latest and greatest, be sure to check out Etrnalee as she makes her way to the D, where her rhymes will be heard and her presence will be made with a genuine talent and a real feeling.

A life and a sound all his own

There is so much to be said about the experiences that shape us into who we are. As human beings we write our life’s stories, without even having to pick up the pen. In the world of music, if there was ever an artist who knows what it means to live a life well written both personally and musically that artist is Thomas Starks. Thus, read on and learn about the talented Thomas Starks who is unapologetically himself with a down to earth and honest attitude.

Thomas has thus far lived a life filled with interesting experiences, and those experiences helped shape Thomas into who he is as an artist and with his influences. “My Father was in the Navy, so we never grounded anywhere, so whatever music scene I landed in, I ate it up,” said Starks who continued on to say that his Father made it a point to have him listen to the Mamma’s and Papa’s. “When I got my first taste of Van Morrison, whoa, it was all over for me, and his LP The Healing Game, changed my life,” said Starks. Still, what about today? If Thomas Starks could collaborate with any artist today who would it be and why? “First and foremost Rob Thomas, because I believe that he is an excellent writer and formulator of concepts, and he’s strategic with his wording,” said Starks.

However, as an artist and a writer Thomas Starks has put together truly amazing lyrical content. But, the question is how long should it take to write a song? Is there a time-frame when it comes to writing good lyrics? “I’ve had songs I’ve written in 15 minutes and then there are those that take ten years,” said Starks who feels that time frames are only relevant when you impose them on yourself. “Tell time to kiss your ass, because there should be no boundaries,” said Starks. Speaking of no boundaries, what advice does an artist like Thomas Starks have for anyone thinking about getting involved in music? “I never like to say that I live in regret, because that’s what the music is for, and you should put the past where it belongs; behind you,” said Starks, who feels that even if it’s just you who believes in your music, that you should never give up. “You’ve got to keep writing, keep playing, and you’ve got to keep pressing forward, because someone somewhere is listening and waiting for you,” said Starks who feels that musicians are story-tellers and the audiences are waiting to here their voice within their art.

With that story-telling from his own life experiences, Thomas Starks knows what drives people to listen to his music. “If there is anything about what I do as a musician that draws people, it would have to be the writing, because people consistently tell me that they can relate to what I’m saying,” said Starks. Lastly, if you would like to relate or check out Thomas Starks and his music, feel free to by going to: www.thomasstarksmusic.com and/or www.myspace.com/thomasstarks

They say that life is meant to be lived, and lived with true intentions. Therefore, if you’re in the mood to check out an artist who has truly lived life with his intentions and his art, than be sure to check out Thomas Starks.

Making it happen with the music we need

A lot of musicians really know how to make their sounds, beats, and music work for them. They take their genre of music, and possibly their band or group members and they create music that appeals to their specific audience. Although this may work for some in the music world, many fans often times need more than one genre of music to satisfy their listening needs. When this is the case, fans should and often do look for a band or group that can mix genre’s and make it work. If that’s what you’re looking for, than you should definitely check out the music of Cody Stagefright.

Cody Stagefright has the all-around sound that works for any type of fan. Furthermore, last Sunday while performing at Elope Lounge in Clinton Township, Mi, I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with the members of Cody Stagefright. The band itself consists of five artists: Chris “Volcano” Fortson, Derek Harrington, Chris Oliver, Jim Woolsey, and David Ross. The band described themselves as a mix of funk, soul, hip-hop, and rock. “We bang on it, till it works,” said Harrington. Now, with such a diversified mix of genres, it was no surprise that these guys have a wide range of inspirations and musical influences. Some of those influences include artists such as: Ice Cube, Scarface, System of a Down, Wilco, The Flaming Lips, and Beck.

Although there are many more influences, the band also mentioned that they themselves are their own inspiration to their music. Not only does that make sense, but it has brought them fans of all kinds, and one notable fan who is a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. “John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a fan of ours, and we are huge fans of the Chili Peppers,” said Oliver.

Aside from fans and influences, the band talked about their hopes, aspirations, and how far they wanted to take it with Cody Stagefright. “We want to take this as far as possible, and we always want to have complete artistic control,” said Woolsey. This is understandable in that the musical diversity and sound of Cody Stagefright does not need to be altered by a record company that doesn’t know what they’re doing. Instead, they look to be in the position where they can flourish with a growing fan base and gain a diversified audience that can come together and enjoy their universal appeal, sound, and style.

In regards to performances, Cody Stagefright performs on Sunday nights at Elope Lounge in Clinton Township, Mi. The Elope Lounge show is a more intimate and relaxed setting, where people can come and end their week with some great music, and get to know the band members in a laid back atmosphere. Cody Stagefright will also be performing at the Roseville, Mi 2009 Relay for Life event on June 6 at Veterans Memorial Park. The band comes on at 4:00 P.M., and you don’t want to miss this show, as they will lend their musical talents in the fight against cancer. Lastly, don’t forget to check out: www.myspace.com/codystagefright

Cody Stagefright has what it takes to not only be successful as artists, but they offer a unique and rare collaboration that works for the masses. Their sheer talent and abilities combined with their knowledge and musical background gives fans of all kinds the chance to hear something that they can enjoy, and something that will enhance their musical taste and the quality of what they listen to.                                                                        Artist Review: Aimee Mann

As an artist who is both independent, as well as respected, Aimee Mann has proven many things over the years with her thought provoking music. She tends to dive deeper into certain aspects of life, that most people want to forget about within their own self and their struggles. Furthermore, Mann has remained staunchly independent and she plans on staying that way for the rest of her musical career.

My first taste of Mann was her album: "The Forgotten Arm." The album proved that Mann has the ability to tell a story that is unique, honest, and rare. Many of the songs, and their personal meaning were/are easy for me to identify with. Still, with Mann, it's not just about a story or personal meaning, but instead it's about creating challenging thoughts for the listener that can truly penetrate their psyche and normal way of thinking.

Her previous album: "Lost In Space," is also a classic example of what it means to put depth and feeling into ones art. Mann gave and still gives the artistic strength, and hope in knowing that not all is lost when it comes to being creative and original.

Thus, if you find yourself burnt out with the antics of life, digitally remastered garbage, or with musical icons who aren't really icons, then may I recommend the messages, themes, thoughts, and sounds of Aimee Mann? This is not about raging a war against the music industry, or acting like an independent snob, but instead it's about musical art, and getting a taste of something that is genuine.

New Sounds in D-Town

If you are clearly tired and plainly fed-up with the current music scene in the D then be prepared because the worlds of r and b, as well as hip-hop have new talent that is hitting the streets of Detroit.  First up comes a rapper who truly and honestly has faith. He is none other than Gerald Diablo Johnson Sr, and he classifies himself as a gospel rapper.  “I didn’t learn how to talk until I started rapping, and my goal is to get people saved through these lyrics,” said Johnson. For the interview he chatted it up about everything from life and death to hope and faith, to music and lyrics.  “I’ve been saved for ten years, and I feel that rap’s biggest problem is that it’s too negative and too immoral,” said Johnson. However, he still has high hopes for his music, faith, and overall career. “The message of God should be a trillion dollar industry, and I want to employ the community and have people invest in the community,” said Johnson. He would then go on to explain life as it relates to the before and after with Christ. “ There was a war going on for my soul because I use to be a bad person, and now a days I want and hope to win every crowd for God,” said Johnson. Thus, for more information on this gospel rapper, you should check out the website www.gracewired.com, or stop by and see him perform at Grace Community Church.

Next up comes a nineteen years young man who is already on Ticketmaster and has touring experience.  His name is Hatch.  “I want to blow up like Eminem, but I feel that most artists in the rap game that are popular only care about making a fast buck,” said Hatch who also feels that rap is becoming to cliché.  “Before I could walk I would dance to music, and I loved to dance when I was younger,” said Hatch who surprisingly was in the recording studio at the ripe and young age of thirteen.  Still, Hatch has also had to face many obstacles along the way.  “I would never claim to be a thug or Gangster and a lot of people have pulled and used the race card against me,” said Hatch. He also feels that it is wrong for rap to promote violence, and to learn more about him, you can check him out at www.myspace.com/hatchwiseguy. Lastly, there is the world of r and b, and the new flavor and sounds of Keith Michael. “When I was a kid I would see a piano and I was magnetized to it, and for some reason all my emotions relate to music,” said Michael.  Keith much like Hatch, also has a website on MySpace, the address is: www.myspace/Keithmklproductions. “Yes I do have some groupies being in the world of r and b, and to put it simply and honestly, yes you do have to sell out in order to be successful,” said Michael.  He would then go on to explain in more detail what he meant by selling out. “I see the significance in selling commercially satisfying records,” said Michael. Here they are three artists hoping to continue with success in the D.

The Katrina Carlson Experience

For those of you who are unaware, it was both a thrill and a pleasure, just under two weeks ago to not only meet, but also see Katrina Carlson perform live in Birmingham, MI.  Not only did she give a rockin good interview as well as an awesome performance, but she even went out of her way to dedicate a song to me, which to this day, still has me over the moon. Still, it was during the interview that I really had the chance to dive into the personal, fun, and intimate details of the music and life of Katrina Carlson. “When I was seven I played the Piano, because my best friend had one,” said Carlson, who also informed me that she started playing the guitar at the young age of thirteen.

This would then lead to my next question about the music industry, and where she fits into it all, and what exactly is good and bad music? “People are judgmental in the musical scene, and we should let the listener decide what is good and what is bad,” said Carlson who also feels that radio is really hard to break through overall.  “We also need more support for independent artists,” said Carlson who’s last album came out in August of 2007.  However, I always come back to the question about why is it that artists like/love to do what they do. For Katrina Carlson that answer was simple. “I play music for people who want to listen, and be touched, because I am a service-oriented individual,” said Carlson.

Yet, the question remains as to how far Katrina Carlson hopes to take her success, as she continues to touch people along the way. “The absolute highest, that is the best, I believe you should always reach for the stars, and I hope to be any and everything I can be,” said Carlson, who feels that she has really already had the success with the people that she has touched.

Therefore, it was time to take this one a step further, as to what is it exactly that makes people successful at what they do musically. “People are good writers who make their music specific yet universal, and you should do music because you love it, and it’s from the heart,” said Carlson who also feels that no matter what happens you should always keep your innocence. On a more personal note, I must say that it was a wonderful experience overall with Katrina Carlson. Her website is: www.katrinacarlson.com and from one heart to another I sincerely hope that all of you check it out. Until next time, thank you Katrina, and check her music out, of which you will find nothing short of inspiring and real.

Meet Moe Nitty

His name is Moe Nitty, and although he is built tough, his lyrics and art form melt the hearts and souls of women everywhere. “I started rap through poetry,” said Moe Nitty, who also said that when he was younger he enjoyed rewording music that he would hear on the radio.

Yet, all rappers have to have some influences, so how about Moe Nitty? “Some of my influences would have to be Scarface, LL Cool J, Marvin Gaye, and Anita Baker,” said Moe Nitty, who also feels that rap know a days sucks, and remember this is coming from a rapper. “People are making a mockery out of rap, and there is no story or passion behind the lyrics,” said Moe Nitty, who on top of losing faith in today’s rap game, feels that it’s not necessary to cuss to make good music because cussing takes away the heart of the rap. “Another thing is that, you don’t have to sell out, you just have to appeal to a certain target audience and run with it,” said Moe Nitty.

Still aren’t we all wondering about mixing musical genres, and would Moe Nitty ever take part in that? “Well I am blunt and I do not use punch lines, so yeah I’d love to have a rock band playing behind me while I’m rapping,” said Moe Nitty. Still, as a rapper and artist the hardest thing that anyone has to face are stereotypes. “Some people stereotype that rap artists are dumb, and I say why is it that rap artists can’t be intelligent,” said Moe Nitty who by the way is anything but your stereotypical rapper. The reason I can say he is anything but your stereotypical rapper is because I had the honor and thrill of hearing Moe Nitty perform, and believe me ladies this is one guy and one show that you do not want to miss.

The album itself is titled: Rated M: Chronicles of a Scorpio

So do not miss out on this musical talent, and stay tuned for more of Moe Nitty.

Meet BoogieTank

With a name that in and of itself is both thought provoking as well as fun, it was nothing short of a pleasure to sit down and chat with Eric Treusch about the band he is playing in known as BoggieTank.  “Initially the name was going to be Fuck Yeah BoogieTank,” said Treusch who along with his fellow band mates thought up the name BoogieTank while having some beers and hanging out.  Regardless of that, the name itself has a real ring to it, a catch, that is both appealing as well as funky, and another plus would have to be that the ladies love it! “Technically we have groupies, and we also have lots of cool friends,” said Treusch.

Now, as far as the inspirations were concerned, BoogieTank has been inspired by other aspiring or somewhat successful artists out there. “The jam band scene, a really good show, and the people I play with, those are my inspirations,” said Treusch.  Still, the world of music for many has become somewhat if not completely problematic. Some feel that there are issues between radio and non-radio, and the issues of what it means to succeed, and at what cost. Treusch offered some answers to these debates and problems. “No matter what, you are going to sound like somebody, and you cannot neglect your influences, but you still have to be authentic because there is a lack of originality in music today,” said Treusch who also feels that getting a deal is not necessarily selling out.

On a totally unrelated subject, Treusch mentioned that he hopes for BoogieTank to collaborate with other groups such as DCarlo and Simplicity. “Hip Hop would also mesh well for us with a show,” said Treusch. However, what exactly or how is it that people identify or label a band like BoogieTank? For this Treusch had some answers as well as stereotypes they’ve encountered. “People actually call us a jam band, yet every band jams, we stretch a little further than a jam band, and it’s funny because we’ve been called hippies,” said Treusch.  In regards to covers BoogieTank plays 70% originals and 30% covers, but a lot of the covers they play some people don’t even know. “If we had to be described musically, I would say that we are Rockjazzfunkdub,” said Treusch. Well, trying saying that word ten times fast.

Nevertheless, if you are interested in learning more or checking out BoogieTank for the first time, you can check them out on MySpace or Sonicbids. Now, I bet you want me to end with something corny like Boogie on, but instead I hope all of you have a truly Rockjazzfunkdub day, peace.

Uncle Ill

The rap game is a whole world filled with many different artists, styles, and talents. There are some who prefer what’s out there now days and then there are those who like it old school. However, wouldn’t it be nice if we had someone who brings a sense of understanding to peoples unique tastes and styles? Furthermore, how about someone who is diversified, and  brings a true talent to the table? For this kind of artist, as well as an insightful conversation, I turned to none other than Uncle Ill.

“I grew up with old school rap,” said Uncle Ill who also said that with his era the main focal point was lyrical content. “I’ve always loved musicals and music in general, and I really could relate to rap because it’s fun,” said Uncle Ill who feels that rap is truly his musical outlet. Yet, not only as a rapper, but also as an artist, how does one get the name Uncle Ill? “Ill was a childhood nickname, and in the hip-hop world it means bad,” said Uncle Ill who when it came to defining success believes that it is what and who you are as an individual.  Now that we are on the topic of success, just how far does Uncle Ill hope to go? “I’d like to make a living off of rap, and tour the country, and really promote and get my name out there even more so than it already is,” said Uncle Ill, who has locally been played on WJLB and Hot 102.7, and he has also had many sponsors.

Still, what is the message, or is there even a message within rap? Also, if there is, what type of message or what style does Uncle Ill have, and what does he hope to get across in his music? “I like to talk about me, and who I am, and that’s what an album is suppose to be, it’s a collection of who you are,” said Uncle Ill, who has two albums out, and is currently working on his third. “Rap is like a stew, and it’s all about a feeling, and living for the moment, and the experience,” said Uncle Ill, who based upon his musical likings, has a truly diversified background.  “My personal preferences include such artists as: LLCoolJ, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog, Lil Kim, Eve, and Invincible”, who said that there are many more and that one of his dreams is to work with a whole orchestra, and continue to mix different genres of music.

Thus, there are many artists out there who claim a lot of different things. However, we really should look for someone who can and has produced good music. Consistency is everything and it’s imperative. It’s also imperative that everyone go and check out Uncle Ill. For more information on Uncle Ill check out his music video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Keep+ON+Uncle+ILL&search_type=&aq=f

Also, check him out on MySpace, and check back here as Groove House will keep you posted with the latest happenings with Uncle Ill.

Meet Pat O’Brien

From a sheer artistic perspective he is better known as a former member of the band Aphonic. Yet, it was nothing short of a pleasure to get to sit down and talk with Pat O’Brien, who had many opinions about many different subjects. As a musician and artist Pat is one of a kind. Furthermore, Pat not only had opinions but he had information about his upcoming musical ventures. Therefore if you do know Pat O’Brien, prepare to catch up, and otherwise get ready to meet Pat O’Brien, the musician and artist.

So yeah, what exactly happened to Aphonic? I mean those of us who know and heard their sounds loved and probably still do love Aphonic, so what’s the deal? “Aphonic is no more, my brother went back to school, and although we toured and did a lot of shows, we were still labeled as a bar band,” said O’Brien. Although, for those of you who are wondering just who Pat is, and who Aphonic was, let’s give you a little bit of a background and insight into this subject. “I myself have three college degrees; Voice Performance, History with honors, and English with Honors,” said O’Brien who said that despite their breakup, Aphonic and its music still sells.

Also, speaking of still selling Pat O’Brien does have a new album coming out titled: “Where it Began.” Still, where did it or does it all begin for Pat O’Brien? In other words, just how did he get into music in general? “My Dad played the piano as a kid, and it was so real and authentic to me,” said O’Brien who told me that to this day with his current music that he never does cover songs. So in many ways, it was with his family as far as where it began for Pat O’Brien.

Of course there is something to be said about Detroit and its music scene in general. “Detroit has great talent,” said O’Brien who feels that Detroit is seen as a larger part of a mass cultural display. Thus, O’Brien had his feelings about music in general, and the reason you should listen to it. “You should never buy music to look cool,” said O’Brien who questioned what exactly it means to truly sell out.

From here it is only appropriate to make a recommendation. The recommendation I will make is to check out Pat O’Brien, who is not only a musician, but he is an individual who is truly in touch with who he is. Once again, his new album that is coming out soon is titled: “Where it Began.” So, be on the lookout and be sure to check out this site for more information about Pat O’Brien and his music.

Honesty in art and in life

When it comes to the world of rap, artists of all kinds understand that the business can be really hit or miss, and it can be filled with some shady characters. You may get signed, but what if that falls through, and who do or should you really trust? Yet, from an artistic standpoint and from one that is based upon raw talent, it was and is an artist like Saint Anger who filled me in on the realities of rap and hip-hop as he shared his artistic opinions.

To give you a little bit of background about Saint Anger, he grew up in Arkansas in gang related areas. “I grew up doing my own thing, and with my art I write about my life,” said Anger. Currently with Bizzle boy, Saint Anger looks to take his art and others art to the next level. “Bizzle boy as a record label wants to help others realize their dreams,” said Anger. Still, what about those who have realized their dreams to an extent? I mean, what is it that Saint Anger thinks and feels about the current situation with rap music and the industry as a whole? “These kids now days are missing out, and the artists are ruining rap and hip-hop to an extent,” said Anger who also thinks that artists who fabricate their music and tell lies haven’t and don’t make it in the game for very long.

He would then continue on. “Music should evoke the emotional roller-coaster of life at times and my group Made Man is all about helping people, and not being a fraud, so that people understand who we truly are,” said Anger, who wants people to understand this point from an artistic and personal perspective. However, let’s just say that Saint Anger was to be offered the opportunity to be a part of a major rap or hip-hop label, but there was one catch. The catch is that the label would have full creative control. “It doesn’t work like that with labels, but if that’s how they wanted it, it would never happen, because they do not need to take control with my art,” said Anger.

Now comes the fun part or at least the part about honesty and life as it relates to the game. On stage rappers may portray one image or another, but really who are they? For Saint Anger this answer is clear. “Rappers miss out when it comes to talking about the 360 man, and what I am referring to by that is the rapper who is the father, person, lover, and artists like 50 Cent are starting to bring that to light, because it’s the real truth,” said Anger. For more honesty about rap and hip-hop he continued on. “We need more publications for the independent hip-hop scene,” said Anger who hopes that one day he will be able to feed his family from and with his art and artistic talents.

Lastly, let’s get into the qualifications, one may need or at least should have to be an artist in the world of rap or hip-hop. “Anybody can’t rap about anything because if you don’t live it you can’t necessarily rap about it,” said Anger who strongly feels that artists should speak about what they know. Then of course there is the desire and drive aspect. “I don’t want to work a 9-5, but instead I want to do my passion, which is music, and although the music industry itself can never be fixed, it is the fans who dictate what they want,” said Anger who also said that he would be happy touching the world with his music. Although, if you are wondering about Saint Anger, and just where he’s coming from as an artist, he’d be the first one to tell you the truth about anything. “I’ve been knocked off my hustle and I’ve got back on, and I’m a survivor and I know I’m going to make it,” said Anger.

At the end of it all, there is one thing to be said about Saint Anger: He’s honest. He’s honest about art, life, and he has no problem being genuine as both a performer and a person. Therefore, if you are interested in checking out Saint Anger go to: www.myspace.com/bizzleboysaint or check out www.bizzleboy.com

By doing so, you can see all of the info needed about the music, and upcoming show dates and Saint Anger’s possible return to the D. So there you have it, he’s honest, he’s knowledgeable, he’s real, and above all he’s Saint Anger.

Artist Review: Sarah McLachlan

There are many artists who regardless of their art form have had, and will continue to have an affect on the world that is primarily universal. These artists evoke many emotions, thoughts, and feelings in not only our minds and hearts but also in our souls. In many cases it would be wrong and a gross generalization to say that there is one artist in the musical world who is liked, touching enough, or who inspires everyone. Still, if you look at the facts, not only from a statistical but also from an emotional basis, it is clear to see that Sara McLachlan has come pretty close to that goal.

Aside from her sound and the overall amazing quality of her music, McLachlan offers something from a lyrical perspective, that as a writer myself, I not only appreciate it but I admire it. It is not only the fact that what she offers is authentic and unique, but there is also a bone-chilling reality and truth to her art, that speaks to our lives in ways that others artists just can’t. Now, I would have to say that I don’t have songs of McLachlan’s that are my favorites, because I do not think of them as favorites in the traditional sense of the word. However, there are songs of hers that are touching and genuine to my life. They include: Elsewhere, Fear, Angel, Ice Cream, and Answer.

Still, do not limit yourself to such a short selection with McLachlan and what I enjoy from her amazing collection of music. Instead, I would urge you to not only listen to, but also experience the artist who will never stop sharing the essence of her soul and being. That of course is Sara McLachlan.

Get to know him

Hey everyone, it’s time for some fun-filled action and excitement in the world of music! Of course many of you are probably thinking, just what could I be talking about? Well, it’s not really what I am talking about, but instead it’s who. Thus, it was nothing short of a pleasure and thrill to be able to interview, and get the thoughts, ideas, and philosophies of none other than Greg Beyer.

Greg Beyer, the person and the musician seem to be and really are intertwined as one. Therefore, he was more than willing to bring 100% of who he is when tackling tough questions about music, future plans, and his career. “My current plan is to release one or two albums and see if any record companies will bite at them,” said Beyer who is definitely looking to play in late April or May with his other band members. From here Beyer would explain his thoughts and ideals about two very important aspects of music; stereotypes and authenticity. “There is a certain stereotype for rock-stars regarding sex, drugs, and rock n roll but the older I get all I want to do is tour and just have people enjoy themselves,” said Beyer who adamantly believes that all heavy drugs do is a bring a person down and that you can achieve your goals without being strung out.

He continued on with the topic of authenticity.  “No matter how you put it, no music is authentic, because all music has been branched and branched from many other bands,” said Beyer who firmly believes that his music is authentic while at the same time it may remind people of other musical artists. He then discussed his influences. “My biggest influences musically would have to be Billy Corrigan, Robert Smith, and Richard Ashcroft because I connect with them the best,” said Beyer. Yet, since this is Detroit, I had to know just what Greg Beyer thought about the current scene and those involved in it. “The current music scene in Detroit is missing the whole scene and it’s missing some balls in that there are not enough rock bands out there and I don’t mean crap rock,” said Beyer.

Lastly, it was important to know just what it was that made Greg Beyer tick. In other words what was it that made him decide to get into the world of music? “I’ve loved music forever, and I remember driving to the mall when I was really young and I would sing along with The Beatles and Neil Diamond, and my family is all musical as well,” said Beyer who felt that music came easy as far being something that he wanted to and does pursue.

From here it’s important to note that Greg Beyer, and his musical ventures will be making head-way all over the city of Detroit and elsewhere. He plans on having a reunion with his former band Sherry and he assured me that his other musical project Detroit Blair, will be heading back to Michigan as well. I hope you’ve enjoyed this time spent getting to know Greg Beyer, and if you get the chance to see him perform, you’ll more than likely find that to be enjoyable as well. So as Greg Beyer keeps rockin, I’ll keep you updated with all of the latest news about his show dates, performances, and anything else you’d like to know about this future star. As always, check back here for more information, and more to come.

Artist Review: Lil Kim

Many of you may have found that Lil Kim, and her oh so notorious antics, music, and style may have caused your jaws to drop, as she consistently out does herself time and time again. Still, there is a small minority, who after watching her perform on “Dancing with the Stars,” they enjoy her moves, and agree with her scores, but at the same time they have no idea who she is. This makes me chuckle, as I think of someone at the office or hopefully at home doing a search on the internet, and learning about this legendry rap artist who has turned heads, and made headlines for who she is. Although, for those of who you who do not know who Lil Kim is, let’s take a look at her through this review.

In all of her performances, music videos, appearances, and whatever else, Lil Kim is always “Notorious,” for bringing who she is as an artist and a person to the stage. I still remember the first time I caught a glimpse of this oh-so naughty Queen Bee of hip-hop and rap. It was in her music video “Crush on You,” where Kim showed that in a male dominated genre of music, she could play tough with any of the big boys of rap, and she could even bring some of them to their knees with her style, lyrics, and overall attitude. She came into the game as a member of the east coast rap group Junior Mafia and her solo career went on to shine from there. Her albums include: Hardcore, the Notorious KIM, Labella Mafia, and the Naked Truth.

She also released a collaborative mix-tape called Ms. G.O.A.T. of which was highly successful, much like anything else she has put out there musically. Still, I know there are many of you who would like me to unleash the details about Lil Kim and her personal life. However, if you truly know Lil Kim, than you know that she likes to let her music tell her story about who she is and what she’s all about. Also, there is much anticipation for her next album to be released, and currently it is in the works.

Yet, aside from what many would perceive as an over the top raunchy artist, Kim has managed to stand up for herself, and dish out an authentic level of expression that shows her consistent and constant creativity. It is the type of creativity that was inspired by her mentor, friend, and major influence in her life, the late and great Notorious B.I.G.

Still, Kim is Kim and no matter who may have influenced her, she is always going to bring a lyrical gift and sound to her genre that has outdone so many. So remember it’s not about what you say, but how you say it, and in the end Lil Kim says it how she wants to, and really what else is there to say about the Queen Bee? The only thing left to say, is go ahead and find out for yourself, and explore the talent and world of Lil Kim.

D. Martin: Representing the D in his own way

Let’s face it, most artists in the world of rap and hip-hop try their best to bring a sound, a lyrical content, and a theme to their music that is uniquely their own. Furthermore, even though some artists have fallen into the trap of being redundant, the independent scene of rap and hip-hop has a lot to offer from an authenticity standpoint.  Thus, it was at De’fusion Lounge in Warren, where I first got a sample of the bright and prospering future of an artist who is not only representing the D, but he is none other than D. Martin.

D. Martin, the man and the artist are incorporated into one individual, and his album ENTER DA GAME brought subjects, topics, and themes with a lyrical content that is rare in the game. “An artist must be willing and unafraid to set the trend, and try different things with their music, because at the end of the day, you want to stand out from the crowd, and not in it,” said Martin who also believes that artists must do their research of past successful artists to learn how to last in the music business. Yet, isn’t their a balance between learning and repeating? I mean, what about those artists in rap who are attacked or criticized for constantly being redundant? “The critics are right, but not just about rap music, because all music is redundant from Rock n Roll to Country, and Pop, and the list goes on,” says Martin who believes that the key to not being redundant is to talk about topics that most artists don’t talk about, or topics that are rarely talked about. “An artist must also arrange their songs in a way where it can’t be easily copied,” said Martin.

Well, it’s one thing to hear an artist like D. Martin talk, but he also backs it up with his performances and music. “This Saturday April 18, I will be at Simons Bar & Grill in Allen Park, and on May 9th I will be at Rendezvous in Clinton Township,” said Martin who also has performances that are being updated constantly and you can check him out at: www.myspace.com/dmartin1

So, with all of this said, let’s talk about his album ENTER DA GAME and what it’s all about. “Everyday life inspires me as an artist, and with ENTER DA GAME there are topics I talk about, that range from a broken down car that you may have had, to encouraging safer sex, to partying in a club,” said Martin who prides himself on making songs for everyone, so that no one is left out. That’s important because really, it’s all about creating a diversified audience, and that’s something D. Martin is doing with his music. “Everyone can and should listen to my music, because I make music for everyone to relate to, regardless of age, and I talk about everyday life experiences because I want my listeners to know that I am human too, and I go through situations just like they do,” said Martin.

Thus, he is performing tonight at Simons Bar & Grill in Allen Park, and don’t forget about his performance at Rendezvous in Clinton Township on May 9th. As a reminder check out D. Martin on all levels at:  www.myspace.com/dmartin1

“When people think of hip-hop, I want them to think of me, and I am willing to work my way up and go through any necessary steps to get to the top,” said Martin. With that said, it’s clear to see that with D. Martin, ENTER DA GAME, and with his future as an artist you should listen up, tune in, and enjoy something that is an expression of a dream coming to life, and a willingness to be real.

The band we know and Rock with

There really is something to be said about a band that has a consistent history. The band with a consistent history that not only plays great music with a great sound, but the one that everyone knows and talks about, and their name is anything but typical. The Natives of the New Dawn are that band, and more than likely you have heard of them, but if not, get ready to be exposed to the band that always makes things happen.

The band itself consists of five musicians; Vincent Mann- the Emcee, Tony Nouhan-keys and vocals, Joe Fikany- guitar and vocals, Rob Kershaw-bass, and Thomas Wachter-drums. It was Vincent Mann who let me in on his thoughts about music, life, and more. “The name is just a description or concept of this project, and we began to call ourselves that,” said Mann who also stated that one day the band may actually pick a band name and confuse the hell out of everybody. Speaking of confusion, there should be no confusion about what genre of music these guys fall into. “If Motown music were to be born for the very first time right now, it would sound like what we are doing, and Motown drew and borrowed from almost all of the genres that were available to them up to that point, which is precisely what we do,” said Mann.

Next up we talked about who inspires the Natives of the New Dawn. “Our inspirations are mostly this hilarious planet and the people who seem to be both happy to be here and confused as to what to do while they are here,” said Mann who also feels that a big inspiration is all of the greatest music that has moved people since the recording of music began. Well, that certainly summed it up, now it’s time to find out where you can see the Natives of the New Dawn in action. “We play all over, when we were in Detroit, we began locally, and then branched out to other cities, then we focused on establishing  ourselves regionally, and upon moving to Los Angeles we put together a few of our national tours,” said Mann, who wants you to check out the Natives of the New Dawn at: www.myspace.com/nativesofthenewdawn

Still, there is more to be discussed here as it relates to the current music scene. “I do believe that rehab ruined rock and roll, in that no one takes anything far enough to break out of the low vibration that seems to be floating around,” said Mann who wishes that there was a radio format committed to original independent music. “Music that makes you feel good is what we like, and thus what we make, because everyone loves music that makes them feel good,” said Mann.

Lastly, Vince left some good advice for all of us. “Music is therapy, use it wisely, and life is hilarious, so look around and don’t forget to breathe,” said Mann.  Once again, you can check out the Native of the New Dawn’s website at:    www.myspace.com/nativesofthenewdawn

Also, keep checking back here as I will keep everyone posted with the happenings and shows for the Natives of the New Dawn. I can’t stress it enough to all of you, that you should go out and see these guys perform, and do what they recommend; have a good time and feel good.

Catching up with Moe Nitty

He’s back!! Well, actually he never left! That’s right so get ready for another installment of the one and only Moe Nitty. “As of right now I am running NITTY TIGHT RECORDS, and I’m a part of Detroit’s power hip hop group, Da C.O.R.E., and on top of all of that I host weekly shows at RENDEZVOUS in Clinton Township, every Friday night,” said Moe Nitty who even with that schedule still has time to be a devoted family man.

Thus, it is in a sense that Moe Nitty has his hands busy in a little bit of everything, and he gets to work with many artists. “By me being a show promoter, I get the chance to work with an abundance of artists, from rap and R&B, to even rock,” said Moe Nitty who says that in many cases most people know him as more of a promoter than an artist. He continued on to clarify. “I can’t even get a pick up game of basketball without someone trying to book themselves on one of my upcoming shows,” said Moe Nitty. Still, isn’t there a downside to promoting? What are the positive and negative aspects of it? “The positive is I’m always meeting new artists, producers, media personnel, club managers and many more types of people, which is a real compliment to what I do,” said Moe Nitty who surprisingly told me that there really is not a negative aspect to it all, because he is a professional and only works with those who are the same.

So yeah what about the current scene with the talent that is out there? “For the most part a lot of the music is actually hot, but the problem is that no one is taking the time to perfect the craft,” said Moe Nitty who feels that everyone is really just seeking instant gratification.  “Yeah the music is hot, but often times the mix is poor and sloppy, there is too much bass drowning out the vocals, and so many other problems and issues,” said Moe Nitty who listed as another bad quality of the young artists is that they have a poor stage presence. “A lot of new acts don’t even know how to hold the microphone and project their voices, and too many times their look doesn’t match their sound,” said Moe Nitty who has tried to educate artists about this, but it is to no avail because the younger generation is full egotistical artists who think they know everything.

As an artist myself, I had to wonder why people would not want or take Moe Nitty’s advice, and also just what is Moe Nitty’s overall advice? “Make sure you separate personal time from grind time because friends and family are important when you have sincerity in your life,” said Moe Nitty. “With that said, remember that during your grind time, make sure you stay on the grind, grind hard, and remember shit has to get done,” said Moe Nitty who also feels that it is very important to practice humility while at the same time being confident. Therefore, in many ways, it’s all about balance, and being honest as well as being genuine.

As far as Moe Nitty’s career as an artist is concerned be sure to check out all the latest happenings at myspace. com/mrmoenitty.

Furthermore, be sure to check Moe Nitty out Friday nights at RENDEZVOUS located at 36217 Gratiot in Clinton Township,MI. Also, in case you missed it check out his album: “Rated M: Chronicles of a Scorpio." Lastly, remember as artists it’s sometimes hard to know who you can trust, and who has the advice you can respect. If it’s all about trust and all about respect then it’s simple. You should trust and respect Moe Nitty.
