My little piece of the ocean.

My 55 Gallon
Reef Tank
|
|
|
|
The
tank is a 55 gallon AGA with about 50 pounds of base rock 10 pounds of
live rock (to seed the base rock with coralin algea), 40 pounds of sand
and 30 pounds of crushed coral. The Base Rock was cycled in my 20
gallon FO tank for about 2 months before it went into the 55. The base rock is actualy tufa that was obtained from a LFS for
$1.59 a pound. Much cheaper than live rock and no impact on the reefs
of the world. Most of the corals in my tank were obtained from
frags. My mated pair of oscellaris clowns are also captive bred. This
is not a no impact reef but it is a low impact one.
The tank was set up in October of 2003. Right now the tank is maintaining the following water parameters:
Temprature-79 to 82 degrees F
Ammonia-0
Nitrites-0
Nitrates-0ppm
PH 8.2
Specific Gravity 1.025
dkH-7.6
Calcium 420mg/l
I Will be adding more tufa rock to the system in the near
future. Also as soon as I figure out how I want to plumb it, I will be
adding a 10 to 20 gallon refugium with a deep sand bed. Part of the set
up that I am planning for the refugium is the addition of GARF Grunge.
This is a package of bio diverse sand that will help seed the refugium
with some of the beneficial life that the tufa rock does not have. They
also insure that part of the bio diversity includes spores from many
different types of coralin algea.
As for now the tank will not change much, aside from the
addition of more rock. I want to ensure the tanks stability before I
start adding more corals.

As of the first of
the year in 2006 my tank will undergo a major overhaul. I will be
adding metal halide, lighting a closed loop and a SQWD to the main pump
return. I have already removed the sand bed and added another 30 pounds
of base rock bringing me up to a total of 100 pounds of live rock. The
DSB was replaced with a 1/2" southdown sand bed.

July 2004 The
tank is now a year old as of October 22nd and has been
running with no problems. It has gone through very little in
the way of additions. I have added an additional 10 pouds of rock to
the system and will continue to add more. Something that will change in
the near future is the substrate. I am going to pull the crushed coral
and sand mix and go for a deep sand bed. The pair of false percs
have been removed to go into my 20 gallon nano and have been replace
with a white striped maroon clown. I have also added a new rock that
has Pulsing Xenia on it. Man does this stuff grow fast!! In the
meantime I have been focusing my attention on a couple of new
projects; a 10 and a 20 gallon nano.

This
page wouldn't be complete without mentioning my wife who is very
understanding about my obsession with large boxes of water.

"Really honey we can do it for about $500."
