Historical skins for Ki-61 "Hien"

04/08/2006 news : With some usefull input from LeBillFish, a lot of historical pictures and patience, i've completely reworked my Ki-61 template; in a few days i'll start re-uploading  my Ki-61 skinpacks one by one (including new skins). "Old" skinpacks will remain available till new ones will be online. Some skins are Ki-61-I-Tei, those should be putted in the Otsu folder (for the same external look), or in the Hei folder (same firepower).

Ki-61's of the 244th sentai

7 skins for the 244th sentai, including :

  • HQ chutai, nr. 45, Msgt Kiyoshi Ando (Kobayashi's wingman);
  • 2nd chutai leader, Capt Takada. As Major Kobayashi, he is one of the rare pilots of this sentai that stay alive in 1945;

  • 1st chutai nr. 43, Cpl Yukio Ishioka;

After a request, i upgraded my template to make those Hien skins.

  • Ki-61-II of the 1st chutai, based at Okinawa in 1945. the pack includes a generic for this one.
  • Ki-61-I-Otsu of the 3rd chutai, with hybrid chutai insignes on the tail, showing that those parts were damaged/repaired.
  • A "before damages/repairs" generic

Ki-61 Skinpack Major Kobayashi, 244th sentai.

6 kown profiles for the K-61-I-Hei/Tei of Major Kobayashi, Leader of 244th sentai. Click here to see some profiles.

He started his career in the JAAF as a light bomber pilot over China. He rose to fame defending the skies over Tokyo in 1944/45. Kobayashi's final credit is 14 (20?) kills, most of them B-29s, and he scored his 6th victory on January 27, 1945, by ramming a Superfortress with his Hien nr.295. He could bail out, and for this merit he received the Bukosho Medal of Honour.

Ki-61 skinpack volume 5

4 various sentai skins, with :

  • Sergeant Ivao Tabata, 39th sentai, a training group - curiously the plane shows 2 victories insignas - skin with a heavy weathering, as a lot of those tired planes used in training groups;
  • Captain Takefumi Jano, 55th Sentai, with the same weathering;
  • 1st lieutenant Mitsuo Oyake, 18th Sentai / 6th Shinten Seku Tai, Kashiwa airfield, january 1945. Those shinten planes were special squadrons using "body attacks" against B-29 bombers;
  • The last one is a Ki-61 of the 18th Sentai, headquarters chutai.
