*Meeting*

Thurs., Feb. 9

Upper Ceilidh, 5:30 pm

We will be discussing upcoming opportunities to become involved in food issues and awareness on campus, including a movie night next week and Earth Week Local Foods/International Taste cooking & baking demonstration.

Everyone Welcome!

--News--

Exciting developments! We will be meeting with Queen's Greens this Thursday (Feb., 9) to discuss a building campaign against the current campus food situation (read: contracts with Sodexho, Brown's). The possibility of a similar development at University of Toronto could also prove to be a welcome support system for action here/

Also, take a look at the poll below. We are looking for meaningful ways to contribute to food insecurity with any profits we might earn through lunch donations. If you have ideas, please send them to greenfoods@gmail.com

And... help!! If you have an interest cooking, baking or publicity or want to pitch in somehow, we'd love to hear from you! There are innumerable food issues on campus that need to be tackled (veggie/vegan options included) and this is a great time to get it on the agenda.

Coming up.... We will be writing an open letter to Queen's Food Services and are asking for student questions and concerns that you would like to be addressed. It's time for answers!!

A big thanks to everyone who came out, ate, and supported our first Green Lunch last Wednesday in Bio Sci. Not only we were able to cover our costs of putting on the lunch, but we also have enough funds to purchase supplies for next week... The project was also featured on Kingston Green's weekly newsletter as the Web Site of the Week!

*NEW* Lean, Mean, GREEN Lunches

Help support local and organic growers by enjoying fresh, homemade vegetarian soups, breads and other baked goods! Lunches will be served twice a month at the tables in Mac-Corry from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm on a weekday TBA. All food is available by donation.

Want to become involved? Learn new recipes and share your own! If you are interested in helping out with lunches by assisting in food shopping, cooking or baking, we’d love to have you join us!

Currently, we are working out the logistics of the project in these areas:

i.     Supplies, i.e. donations, fundraising, shopping
ii.    Logistics, i.e. cooking/baking (recipes??), serving, location, pricing (so that an appropriate donation suggestion can be calculated)
iii.   Publicity and campus awareness

Along these lines, we need to figure out a way to keep the soups warm over the 2 hour period and decide what we want to serve them in. As well, we need to specify a specific day that will work with most people's schedules and book the table space in Mac-Corry.

*UPDATE*

The Green Foods Potluck kicked off with lots of wonderful foods! Thanks to every one who came out. Look for recipes from the potluck on the Recipe Database.

There are a bunch of new links on the Links page regarding local foods in schools. Check it out!

Also, there were a bunch of new ideas discussed for next term:

1)  Periodic soup/bread lunches (by donation?) starting early next term to start giving students food alternatives

(2)  Sunday Night Dinners for students living in residence
(3)  Holding a community event in partnership with local food activists and groups
(4)  Making students more aware of the current food situation at Queen's (Sodexho contract, etc)
(5)  Continue periodic Green Foods Potlucks, possibly invite speakers
(6)  Promote partnership with Desert Lake Gardens to students/faculty as way to encourage alternative consumption

If any one has a particular interest in one or more of the projects listed above or you have some other ideas, feel free to get in touch and I'll pass along information to the group. If we want to start the soup lunches in January, we should start brainstorming now on supplies, publicity, etc.!

Welcome to Green Your Eats!

The Green Your Eats project is designed to bring alternative (local, organic, fair trade) foods to the Queen's community in an effort to provide viable, healthy, and pro-active food choices for students and staff. The objectives are threefold:

i. Make fair, local foods available on campus

ii. Implement awareness activities that demonstrate and explore food security issues at city, national and international scales

iii. Produce an adequate project framework and interest among Queen's and Kingston community members to enable future developments

There is a loud call for supporting small-scale agriculturalists and to encourage alternative methods of food sustainability, whether through direct support (buying foodstuffs directly from the supplier or farmer) or creating opportunities for individuals to make active contributions to their own security (community gardens, markets, food banks, etc.). The project proposes the creation of an open dialogue surrounding food issues on campus, in the home, in Kingston and the world.
