Holistic Affordable Housing, or H!A!H!, is likely the local organization most in need of Service-Learning student assistance as it is penniless & neglected by activists.
As a sub-organization of the Center for Sustainable Living (an umbrella 501(c)3 non-profit), H!A!H! neither pays dues to the parent group nor receives any financial support from the main body.
Below are the #s for the Center for Sustainable Living's income & outgo for 2005.
I, Mylo Roze, ~the founder of H!A!H!, have spent something like $50 for printing of pamphlets, flyers, hand-outs & food for meetings.
I do not collect dues, as the membership is very loose & not very involved beyond verbal support & including me as a project of CSL.
So this would be a fairly simple project for students to help with, or a lot of work, depending on how one looks at it.
I am less concerned now with generating a membership than digging into the grant-writing & fundraising, so that administrators, architects & engineers can be hired to complete the plans for an eco-condo & apartment complex. Once a concrete plan is developed, funding for the actual construction can be solicited.
The Center for Sustainable Living's total/gross income for 2005 was $15,779.33. Their total expenses came to $14,401.32, making their net income $1,378.01.
Projects of the CSL operate independently, some paying dues to the parent organization.
The Community Bike Project is likely one of the most successful, maintaining its own building & paying dues.
But presently, H!A!H! has no such dues required, no income or paid staff. We really need your help!
Holistic Affordable Housing will likely need to become a separate non-profit, since any large grants would affect the tax status of CSL. So the fees required to file separately may also be a good first target.
Thank you for becoming engaged with the community.
The need for low-cost, energy efficient, accessible housing is as dire as ever. By including urban, organic agriculture in our model, we will be able to grow much of our own food. By making recycling & composting mandatory conditions for residence, we promote personal responsibility & generate food from waste.
By implementing alternative energy & utilizing energy efficient appliances & reducing energy needs through eco-architectural design, we reduce the cost of living & our impact on the planet, including third world peoples affected by our nation's greed & gluttony.
By sharing supplies & tools collectively & creating purchasing cooperatives, we lessen the price of needed products.
By including eco-preneurial incubators, like trade-skill training in gardening, printing, manufacturing items from salvaged materials, food preparation for Farmer's Market & the like, we will empower people with methods of self-employment & ways to supplement their income.
More than a solar slum, H!A!H! hopes to provide a new, community oriented way of living that enriches individuals financially & emotionally, while providing proven examples to the community at large.
