~Vision Statement~
~Our goal is nothing short of the transformation of society from an exploitative state to an altruistic family, from a culture of callous consumerism to one of conscience & conservation. There can be no economy without its basis, the ecosystem.
~By implementing ancient technologies, augmented by modern science, when constructing civic, commercial & residential buildings, WE will raise the standard of living for particular individuals without sacrificing the quality of life of the general population or future generations. By employing ecologically sustainable construction methods & focusing on establishing low-income housing, WE will be creating new jobs in the growing eco-construction industry, adressing the problems of homelessness, poverty, pollution & habitat destruction, as well as the crime & health issues associated with these.
~By planting these green structures in urban areas & publicizing our projects, WE shall be providing the public with hard-to-ignore examples of how things could & should be done, as well as lessening the impact of urbanization on the landscape & ecosystem. By working with other organizations with similar ideals & practices & by reaching out to the general citizenry, WE will help fortify a network of community groups & individuals which share information, resources & ideas, thereby ensuring that these methods will gain greater acceptance, support & implementation in the general community, throughout the nation &, indeed, the world.
~Considering the continuing growth of the population & rising levels of environmental degradation, it is imperative that we (humanity) begin now to change the ways we supply ourselves with shelter, food & energy. By integrating organic gardens, greenhouses & orchards, along with composting & multiple forms of alternative energy generation into the designs of these buildings, WE reduce environmental destruction & improve mental, physical & planetary health. WE also generate self-sustaining communities & individuals, which is good for national security & personal dignity.
~Economic & ecological woes are everyone's problem. Holistic Affordable Housing (H!A!H!) can help solve much of it by gathering the government grants, corporate & private contributions needed to implement eco-architecture on a grander scale & provide students & the working poor with homes in which they can take pride.
~H!A!H! is a project of the Center for Sustainable Living, a non-profit organization in Bloomington, Indiana. While the focus will be upon constructing accessible, low-income eco-apartments & condos in the city limits, other co-housing & existing home/building conversion projects in town & elsewhere will also be considered. The creation of collectives & intentional communities will help connect communities. Providing an alternative to the grid should lower the cost of utilities for residents. Things like energy efficient appliances, greywater turbines, gyms & playgrounds which generate electricity from motion & bicycle sheds, along with native plant landscaping, the reuse of waste energy & heat, internal arboritums & creative aesthetics should make these spaces a pleasant, interesting & harmonious place to live. It will also provide educational opportunities for schools & organizations.
~Anyone interested in donating their time, materials or talents to help create these kinds of eco/conscious communities should get involved.
