Claire Lee I set up Greenhithe DA in March 2008, and it was something i had wanted to do for several years. My depression started in 1999 after my younger brother died in a car accident and i suffered for many years. Eventually i was admitted to 'The Priory' hospital for a month where i learned a lot about coping with depression and i was also lucky enough to find an excellent Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Also, my Pshychiatrist there put me on the right medication for me and this made a big difference. Now i'm back working, eating and sleeping better than ever before! I am still on antidepressants but i wouldn't consider my self as being depressed, we all still have our moments but i can cope with them. My reason for setting up the group was that so many people don't have the oportunity to get the same excellent care that i did (eventualy) and i wanted to share all the things i had learned to help others. Depression Alliance is the leading UK charity for people with depression
We work to relieve and to prevent this treatable condition by providing information and support services to those who are affected by it via our publications, supporter services and network of self-help groups for people affected by depression. A user-focused organisation, we have offices in England and a sister charity in Scotland.
Depression Alliance believes that the stigma and lack of accurate information surrounding depression continues to prevent people from seeking and finding appropriate and vital help when it is required. Early intervention and information are crucial in enabling those affected by depression to recover quickly and – critically – in preventing further episodes.
Informed by the experiences of people with depression and by research, we work extensively with government agencies and healthcare professionals to improve the service provision for those affected by depression. We also campaign to raise awareness amongst the general public about the realities of this severe and enduring illness by organising a variety of events and initiatives, including our highly successful Depression Awareness Week™ (formerly National Depression Week).
