WALT DISNEY STUDIO
The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
original production animation cel painting and background print
gouache on untrimmed animation cel sheet; cel image size: 6.5" x 7"; overall 9" x 15" with 11" x 17" background print
This expressive, full-figure hand-painted animation cel of Basil, the film's main character, was created in the Disney ink-and-paint department and photographed during the making of the animated feature based on the story Basil of Baker Street by Eve Titus. This cel appears in a scene in Basil's Baker Street flat after Ratigan's bat Fidget has kidnapped Olivia Flaversham. After analyzing the note Fidget left behind, Basil posts a map of London the the wall and responds to a skeptical Dr. Dawson: " No, no, elementary, my dear Dawson." He goes on to explain that the evidence leads them to a "seedy pub at the only spot where the sewer connects to the waterfront."
The cel was selected and prepared for release in Disney's art program; it is set over a color print of the matching background in the film. Handwritten notation on the back of the background print identifies the production, sequence and scene in the film. Studio designation “12” is written at lower right to indicate this cel's place in the scene. Our certificate of authenticity is included.
VERY FINE+ condition.
