Grand National Anorak

Miscellaneous Stuff

The Grand National Anorak by his favourite National fence , the third whilst walking the course on Grand National day in 1996.

This page is just random musings - ever wanted to know what race card number has been the most successful since the war ? I didn't until recently.

Does anyone sit there watching old races trying to work out which fence is the most incident free ? No......well sometimes.

Did you know ?

In both the the 1996 and 1999 Grand National the field managed to complete a full circuit of the course without any horses coming to grief. In 1996 the field survived from the third fence on the first circuit (Party Politics falling) until the same fence a circuit later (Brackenfield unseating rider) and in 1999 the field remained intact between first and second Bechers.

IN 2015 WE WENT ONE BETTER. AFTER BALTHAZAR KING & BALLYCASEY DEPARTED AT THE CANAL TURN THE FIELD REMAINED INTACT UNTIL FENCE 26.

In 2017 only one horse parted company with his rider on the second circuit.

In November 1994 all five runners completed the course in the John Parrett Chase run over a circuit of the National course.

How to make the National even better

Heres a rant from 2016 - not as bad this year as no major contenders missed the cut but I would still love to see a "Silver" National : -

We have now enjoyed four marvellous Nationals since the most widespread modifications in the Nationals history. Fences, distance and starting procedure all good. Keeping a forty runner National and not bowing to pressures to reduce the number of runners even better.

Now let the authorities look at the elimination process. In 2016 a former Grand National winner, a dual Welsh National winner, the current Becher Chase winner, the winner of the Haydock Park Grand National Trial and a horse placed in the past two Nationals all missed the cut. And then to add insult to injury for the connections of the four reserves for the second year running a horse was withdrawn on the day of the race so we did not even get a maximum field.

The Anoraks suggestions  : -

(i) The Aintree factor must take precedence - if  you have won a National you automatically qualify for future runnings
(ii) Certain recognised Grand National Trials to have a "Win and Your`e In" status . Winners of the current seasons Becher Chase, Welsh National, Haydock Park National Trial and (at a push) Eider Chase to be guaranteed a run whatever their handicap mark.
(iii) In Ireland a reserve can run right up until post time. Why can`t we have that for the National ?
(iii) For those that miss the cut a "Silver National" to be run on the Friday as the last race on the card. Run over the Becher Chase course as not every horse is suited by the Topham.

You heard it here first folks.

Race card Numbers

Not the most scientific way to pick your National winner but here is a novel way of doing so . Here are the winning race card numbers for all National winners since 1946 - interestingly no horse at number 3 in the race card has ever won.

The Virtual Grand National

When Channel 4 first broadcast the National in 2013 they really threw themselves into it with an evening of programmes dedicated to the National (Grand National "Come Dine With Me", a documentary "How to Win the Grand National" and even a special edition of Alan Carr's "Chatty Man" talk show.  ITV were  little more low key but on Grand National eve a 20 minute programme, "The Virtual Grand National" appeared on ITV4. The premise was simple, enter lots of stats on the forty proposed runners into the computer together with all sorts of the most technically advanced "algorithms". Have input from jockeys past and present and various experts and run a "Virtual Grand National".

The computer graphics were stunning, as good if not better than the Virtual racing streamed daily into our betting shops and we had a great commentary by Stuart Machin. Would they predict the National winner ?

Not quite...... whilst the Virtual National winner Cause of Causes did finish second in the real thing as the table below shows the Virtual National bore no relation whatsoever to the actual race (One For Arthur did not feature at all in the finish) and whilst it was all great fun I doubt the experiment will be repeated.
