Aintree Specialists 1992 -

This page celebrates the Aintree specialist, the horses who have raced more than once over the unique Aintree fences. The top ten are listed below.

To be an Aintree specialist the horse had to have run in at least one Grand National and at least one other supporting race over the National fences (or raced in more than one National). I then worked out the number of fences that the horse had jumped successfully to reach my "Top Ten".

For this section I have gone back to November 1992 and have not considered horses who  ran over course before that date. As we know from the 1966-67 season until 1992 (with one brief exception) Aintree only raced once a year for the three day National meeting.  Horses from that era only got one opportunity a year to run over the fences. I can only wistfully imagine just how many races over the National course the heroes of the seventies & eighties would have run in if the Autumn meeting had been a part of the fixture list during this period. I could not in all fairness try and compare horses with such limited opportunities to the heroes of today.

21st November 1992 started a new era as Aintree made the first tentative steps on the road to becoming a full-time racecourse once more. Since then the programme has expanded over the years and there is now a fixed programme comprising in 2008 of nine days racing.

The Races

John Smiths Grand National  4 & 1/2 miles (30 fences)

John Smiths Foxhunters Chase 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs (18 fences) (F) - For amateur riders. First run in 1923 over the full National course and distance. Reduced in size in 1949 in an attempt to encourage more runners. Run on the first day of the National meeting since 1999 having previously been run on the Friday. Since 1999 no intended National runner can run in both races. Shortened in distance by half a furlong in 2001 to reduce the run-in to the first fence.

John Smiths Topham Chase 2 miles 5 1/2 fulongs (18 fences) - (T) - First run in 1948. Run on the first day of the National meeting it gave punters the first opportunity of seeing the Grand National course in all its glory. In 1999  it was switched to the Friday where it remains. Having been run as the Topham Trophy until 1982 it was then run under a variety of sponsored guises until 1989 when it was re-named in honour of the late clerk of the course, John Hughes who had died suddenly the previous autumn. The John Hughes Memorial Trophy is still awarded to the winning connections althought the title "Topham" was re-introduced in 2002. As with the Foxhunters it was slightly shortened in distance in 2001 and since 1999 no horses can run on  both the National and the Topham at the same meeting.

Totesport.com Becher Chase 3miles 2 1/2 furlongs (21 fences) - (B) - First run in 1992, the highlight of the new Autumn meeting. Whilst clearly the natural successor to the Grand Sefton Chase (which had been the showpiece of the old autumn meeting)  the Aintree executive ingeniously broke with tradition and gave the new race it`s own identity with  a brand new distance for the National course. In a brave move the race started at the Canal Turn and had a slightly lowered Valentines as the first fence. It did take time for the race to establish itself as it was in competition with a valuable meeting at Ascot and the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon and was the week before the Hennessy. Over the years the race has grown in stature and is now a highlight of the pre-Christmas calender. Following a number of fallers at the first fence in 2005 the race was slightly reduced in distance in 2006 with the race now starting after Valentines.

Totepool Grand Sefton Chase - 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs (18 fences) - (GS) - Formally the highlight of the Autumn meetingthe race was last run in 1965. Revived for one year only in 1972 when it was run as the "William Hill Grand National Trial". Re-introduced in 2003 as part of an extended two day Becher meeting. The race initially formed part of the "Betfair Jockeys Challenge", an  Anglo-Irish jockeys team competition. It is now on the same card as the Becher Chase and whilst it is certainly not the class event that it`s predecessor was it has been very well subscribed over the past two years. I would describe the race as more of a Topham trial.

Two other races have been run over the National fences since 1992

John Parrett Memorial Chase - 2 miles 1/2 furlong (14 fences) - (JP) - 1993-95 - Named in honour of the late clerk of the course who had been killed in a hunting accident before the 1993 National. Whilst it must have seemed a good idea on paper to have a race over the minimum distance taking in one circuit of the National course (except the Chair and Water jump) the race was not popular and its three runnings only attracted seven, five and three runners respectively. The race was tranferred to the Mildmay course in 1996 and whilst the race name has disappeared the John Parrett Memorial Trophy is still awarded for one of the chases run at the October Mildmay meeting.

Sefton Amateur Riders Chase - 2 miles 6 furlongs (18 fences) - (S) - 1997 - A terrible race for amateurs run after the Becher Chase in 1997. The race was so poor  it was not repeated.

The Top Ten Aintree Specialists 1992 -

It is no surprise that Amberleigh House tops our list of Aintree Specialists but what is surprising is just how far ahead he is of his nearest rival. Amberleigh House has jumped more Aintree fences than any other post war National runner no mean feat as he only had two opportunities a year to do this.

To compare our heroes of the modern era I have included within the list  the record of some other notable Aintree stalwarts who graced the Aintree turf between 1946 and 1992.

The Rest

In the following lists the first set of figures after the horses name is the National record with placings in brackets. Following that are the other races over the National course (T-Topham, F-Foxhunters, B - Becher, GS -Grand Sefton, JP - John Parrett, S - Sefton). The final figure in italics in brackets is the number of National fences the horse successfully jumped. If a horse was remounted the fence where it came to grief does not count in the final total. So, for example Papillon`s total is 59 fences as he completed in the 2000 & 2001 Grand Nationals but in 2001 was remounted after being baulked by loose horses at the 19th fence. Horses featured in bold have a hundred per cent completion rate.

Note : - totals for 2011 Grand National take into consideration that only 28 fences were jumped and totals for 2012 & 2015 - 29 fences.
