Brian Anderson Monday Report (1st June)

North District Women's Division 1 was completed at the weekend when Grammar FPs 2nds and Granite City Wanderers 2nds played each other in the last match of the season. Wanderers recent good form continued and they beat the FP side with the only goal of the match. Grammar FPs 2nds finished the season at the bottom of the League but it may be that they will retain their Division 1 status depending on whether or not a Division 2 team decides to take promotion.

In North District Women's Division 2 Bon Accord MBC 2nds extended run of good form continued when they beat Aberdeen Ladies 2nds at Portlethen. This was Aberdeen Ladies 2nds first defeat of the season and Bon Accord's first half form saw them record a comfortable victory.

Four Division 2 matches remain outstanding and the Clubs concerned have two weeks to attempt to arrange these games.

Brian Anderson Friday Report (29th May)

The final match in North District Women's Division 1 goes ahead on Saturday at Rubislaw when Grammar FPs 2nds play hosts to Granite City Wanderers 2nds. The match carries a fair significance for the FP squad since they need a win to stave off any possibility of relegation. A win for FPs 2nds would put Aberdeen University 2nds in the frame for relegation if it happens but with only Bon Accord MBC 2nds indicating a wish to take promotion as Division 2 runners up the situation may not occur.

Two matches are down for decision in Division 2 over the weekend with the pick of them being at Portlethen Academy on Saturday when the top two teams in the League Aberdeen Ladies 2nds and Bon Accord MBC 2nds play each other. Aberdeen Ladies 2nds will be out to keep their unbeaten record for the season but will have to be wary of a Bon Accord outfit who have shown considerable improvement in the second half of the season. The other match sees AIC Inverurie 2nds travel on Sunday to Inverness to play the talented young InveRoss team.

After this weekend nine matches are outstanding in Division 2 but no confirmation of dates for these is forthcoming.

4th Annual RGU Sport Men’s Hockey Indoor Cup

On Sunday 28th December the biggest ever RGU Sport Men’s Indoor Cup takes place at the RGU Sport’s Centre at Garthdee, Aberdeen.  The inclusion of the top 3 SHU National League 1 sides is a major coupe for the event and shows that in its 4th year the event is starting to attract the teams that the organising committee hoped for at the very start back in 2005.

In the 6 team event local interest comes from annual entrants Aberdeen Asset Management and Tinto Granite City Wanderers.  Last year both teams were under strength at the event but both sides are determined to improve on last years 5th and 6th places.

Champions in 2007 VWS (Dundee) Wanderers return to defend their crown and are at present sitting close to the top of National League 1 and will be more than happy to retain the trophy.  Menzieshill and Inverleith come with a wealth of experience.  Menzieshill, National League 1 Champions and European Semi Finalists in 2008, will start off as favourites and this will be a warm up event for their European adventure as Scotland’s representative this year in Germany and a medal is an aim this time around.  Inverleith will also be a major challenger having won the competition in 2006 and will travel north from Edinburgh with Beijing Olympian Stephen Dick in some capacity, for the spectators it is hoped a playing one.

Finishing the 6 team line up are Harris Academy FP’s who are playing in National League 1 for the second year running and will hope that this event again gives them the chance to blood a few younger players to the competition environment.

Games start at 9.10am and go onto 6.00pm and entry is free!!!  For further details, please contact Kevin McNab, Grampian Hockey Development Officer on 01569 768351 or 07739 511382.

McGregor Named GB Athlete of the Year

Great Britain Hockey  named goalkeeper, and Scot, Alistair McGregor Athlete of the Year for 2008.

Only the third recipient, and the first male winner, McGregor commented: “It is a massive honour to be named GB Athlete of the Year.  It’s a great privilege but I certainly don’t play for individual rewards.  This is a credit to the entire team and the way we have played this year.”

The 27-year-old helped GB secure Olympic Qualification in Chile in March and his world class performances in Beijing pushed Great Britain to their best Olympic finish since winning Gold in 1988, with only Germany, Spain and the Netherlands conceding fewer goals in the pool stages.

Great Britain men’s coach Jason Lee said: “The team certainly played above the expectations of most of the world this year, and to my mind that was predominantly because of good ability and exceptional commitment from the group.  None of the players exemplified this more than Ali McGregor.  Having watched him closely over the last few years, he has made numerous match changing saves for Scotland and Great Britain.”

McGregor added: “I think the fact that I’m the first male recipient just goes to show how well the guys performed in Beijing and is testament to the success we achieved in finishing fifth.”

After an intense year, McGregor is taking time away from club commitments but not from the pitch. He is passing along his Beijing experience to others: “I’ve been doing a lot of coaching since I got back.  When I was younger I would have loved to have been able to receive coaching from a current international.  I’m keen to give something back.”

In just a year, McGregor has been capped 29 times for Great Britain and will be hoping to add to his tally with London 2012 on the horizon.

The Scotsman explained how his work is cut out for him: “Moving forward, hockey has received a massive boost from the men and women’s accomplishments at the Olympics.  The medal success of Team GB has provided a massive lift for the nation but it will be a tough next four years for athletes with dreams of competing in London.

“People don’t see the effort that goes into preparing for a tournament like the Olympics; the early mornings and the gruelling training commitments.  It is every athlete’s dream to compete at an Olympic Games in their own country but it will be a long road to reach that destination.”
The PE teacher first appeared for Great Britain as a half time substitute against the Netherlands on 23rd October 2007 as GB went down 3-1 in Eindhoven.

McGregor began his goalkeeping career at home in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, after initially beginning life out field.  After he refused to pass to teammates his coach gave him a choice: sit out of practice or put on the pads.  Thankfully, the young McGregor chose the pads and has not looked back since, working his way up through Scotland’s ranks at all age groups before making his senior debut against India in 2001.  He currently has 82 caps for Scotland.

McGregor will return to domestic action with his club, Loughborough Students, after Christmas in preparation for Scotland’s EuroHockey Nations Trophy campaign next summer.
