- To sensitise disabled people to the health benefits of sports
- To sensitise the general public about para-lympic sport
- To create differences in disabled clubs, in each divisional council
- To provide tournament competition for disabled athletes
Our Mission
Sports and Recreation is crucial to the development, rehabilitation, empowerment and integration
of disabled people in The Gambia. Besides its cardinal function of contributing to health and
physical well being, sporting activities (either competitive or for fun) provide opportunities
to sensitise the general public to disabled matters and equality - equal access and integration.
The G.P.D.S.A. is committed to increasing participation and creating a positive image of
disabled people in The Gambia. Its role is to provide sustainable sports and recreational programs
for the disabled people and to create a forum for discussion on to utilize physical activities
in society for disabled people. These activities should be functional within and to the
community it serves by setting a standard for others to follow. The G.P.D.S.A. is non-religious/
non-government disabled persons organization.
Our Constitution
Who We Represent
The G.P.D.S.A. represents individuals with a physical disability that might want to play or
join in any sporting or recreational activity. This is to uphold the human rights of those people to take
part in those sports or recreation without discrimination. This means that anybody in a wheelchair or with
a physical disability should be allowed equal access to participate in all sports and recreational
activities. Sports and physical activity is seen by the G.P.D.S.A. as being of the utmost importance for
both psychological & physical fitness toward good health and well being.
Organization Origins
The Gambian Association of the Physically Disabled Community (G.A.P.D.) is the national organization
representing all disabled people in The Gambia with a physical disability. Sporting activities for
disabled people was in such high demand and held in such high regard that in 1998 the G.A.P.D. formed
the Gambian Physical Disability Sports Association (G.P.D.S.A.) as an arm of its organization in order to enhance their members health and their integration into the mainstream of their respected communities.
