Painting Bone

Bone is pretty neat. I like bone. Yes. Well, perhaps you are looking to paint some bone that actually looks like bone, instead of a vibrant white colour. I've tried a few different methods on bones, and depending on what kind of bones you want to represent there are a couple of different ways.

All of my methods start by doing a basecoat of Scorched Brown. Brown, you say? That's right. If you look at a picture of an actual skeleton (particularly a skull) you'll see that very rarely are any parts of it totally in shadow. Where joints and holes are, there is usually enough light shining or reflecting through to dimly illuminate almost every part of it. Starting with a dark brown basecoat rather than black is a subtle way to make the bone look a little more realistic. Next up, you'll want to take Bestial Brown and cover the majority of the bones with it, leaving the Scorched Brown showing through in what would be the darkest parts of the model, namely the joints, rib cage, and eyes and mouth.

Here's where you decide what kind of bone you want. If you're looking for a more gothic-style bone, once again I paint most of the surface with Bleached Bone, leaving the areas which would be in the natural shadow Bestial Brown. If your bone is particularly polished or sun-bleached, go for some highlighting with Skull White, but I recommend keeping pure white to a minimum. I forgot to take a picture in between steps here; what happened was I painted on Bleached Bone, didn't like how much it stood out, and went over with a Scorched Brown wash to fade it back into the base.

A little bit of Bleached Bone to highlight the proper edges and draw on some makeshift feet, and voila! It's bone.

If you want a more aged bone, the kind that says "I just cracked open my aeons-old tomb", then instead of moving through whites go for tans instead. I used this on my Tomb Kings army with excellent effect. To get a still-rotting effect, try patchy green and red glazes. If I happen to do these schemes I will put up pictures of them.
