Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Football League: Div 3
Govilon 5 Crickhowell 3
Govilon continued their quest for promotion in this league encounter with local rivals Crickhowell, but the threatened goal rout never materialised as a brave Crickhowell side fought back well. Kicking off into the teeth of a strong wind Govilon went ahead as early as five minutes when Jamie Laurent’s free kick from the left flank found the top corner of the net. Defender turned striker James Powell, returning after a three game lay off quickly proved more than capable adding Govilon’s second three minutes later. Powell was again on the score sheet on the quarter hour mark following good midfield work by Elliot Morris who set him up to add his second. Despite more pressure Govilon were thwarted by Crickhowell’s goal keeper and had to settle for a three–nil interval lead. Govilon suffered a setback early into the second half when Crickhowell notched their first goal and soon added another to cut the deficit to one goal. Govilon fought back but still found Crick’s goal keeper in outstanding form and were grateful to the ever active Matthew Ham who got their important fourth goal. On eighty minutes Richard McCarthy made sure of victory, making no mistake when set clear. There was still time in the dying moments for Crickhowell to score a third from a left side free kick, in what turned out to be a replica of Laurent’s opener.

John Payne Barber Gwent Amateur Cup – Quarter Final
Clydach Wasps 1 Govilon 2
Gwent County League Third Division outfit Govilon claimed another First Division cup scalp with this narrow victory which propels them into a semi-final tie against Coed Eva Athletic. Govilon took the lead on a sticky pitch after 15 minutes when Dean Morgan’s shot from the narrowest of angles stuck defender Alistair Paton on the goal line. Despite protests that the ball had not crossed the line referee Fewings awarded the goal. Clydach enjoyed large periods of possession during the remainder of the first half and at half time Steve Morgan the Govilon manager made two changes, introducing Jamie Laurent and Mike Davies. Clydach drew level when Rob Morrison in the Govilon goal was deceived by a cross from the left flank which floated into the top corner of the net. Morrison was soon in action again when Clydach were awarded a penalty which was fired wide of the target. Because of encroachment, the referee ordered the spot kick to be re-taken and this time Morrison saved superbly from the goal bound spot kick hurling himself to his right. This was a tense and hard fought encounter, made harder for Govilon when experienced defender Craig Salmons was injured and although he returned to the action, a thigh injury limited his mobility. Clydach pressed hard for the winner but both sides had to settle for a 1-1 score line after 90 minutes. In the first period of extra time it was Govilon’s turn to be awarded a penalty and up stepped Richard McCarthy to beat Ian McKnight in Clydach’s goal. More Clydach pressure followed as Govilon defended their narrow lead and the battered Salmons finally had to leave the pitch being replaced by Stuart Norman, before the referee’s final whistle meant Govilon returned home to continue their cup quest on 15 March at a venue to be arranged.

Gwent County FA John Payne Barber Amateur Cup- Round 3
Govilon 5 Albion Rovers 0
Govilon AFC eased into the quarter finals of the Gwent Amateur Cup with a convincing win over Gwent County 1st Division outfit, Albion Rovers.
The Newport based side fell behind as early as the 3rd minute when Govilon’s Richard McCarthy found the net. Two minutes later, his strike partner Dean Morgan doubled Govilon’s lead, and Albion’s misery was compounded in the eighth minute when one of their defenders put the ball into his own net. Facing an uphill struggle, Albion saw two players cautioned inside the first thirty minutes and their goalkeeper make an outstanding save as the score remained 3-0 at half time. Govilon introduced James Powell as a half time substitute, and ten minutes later added Andy Spiers to their defence and Craig Norman to midfield. Phil Davies in the Govilon goal was at full stretch to turn away a goalbound effort from Albion who later saw a player dismissed for a second bookable offence. Richard McCarthy added to his tally with Govilon’s fourth as the game was drawing to an end and Dean Morgan was on hand to lob the ball over the Albion goalkeeper following a defensive mix-up for his second goal as Govilon ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

Govilon AFC 4 AC Pontymister 0
Govilon AFC scored four goals for the second successive week, but this time took all three points compared to last week’s one point haul from Penypound. Facing third placed AC Pontymister, who brought their own brand of stylish football to the Recreation Ground, Govilon faced an even opening thirty minutes in front of their growing band of supporters who topped the hundred mark for the first time this season. It was left to Matthew Ham, put through by a Jamie Laurent pass which tore the Pontymister defence apart, to break the deadlock when he shot past Craig Mclaughlin in the Pontymister goal despite a valiant attempt to save. As half time approached Robert Frost saw his effort beat the giant frame of McLaughlin and seemed certain to score except for a brilliant goal-line clearance by Gavin Thomas.
It was early into the second half that Govilon broke away and extended their lead with two quick goals. Laurent was the schemer again, this time finding Govilon goal ace, Dean Morgan with another telling pass and Govilon’s marksman made no mistake for a 2-0 lead. Moments later the same combination struck again with Morgan receiving the ball close to the goal line for an easy tap-in. Craig Thomas’ strength saw him power into the Pontymister penalty area and his shot beaten away for a corner from which live –wire Matthew Ham headed wide. Thomas was soon in action again when another surge saw him fire into the side netting. Pontymister kept battling away but had little change from Govilon’s central defensive pairing of Craig Salmons and Jamie Wilkins, and Govilon extended their lead after 75 minutes. This time Morgan was the provider, unselfishly setting up strike partner Richard McCarthy, who nearly doubled his tally when his searing free kick brought a smart save from McLaughlin. Govilon, pressing hard, saw several chances go close as the game drifted towards full time and a convincing four-nil victory.
A half time collection produced £70, in aid of The Nuerofibromatosis Association, and the match ball sponsor was Govilon Post Office. Next week Govilon travel to Caldicot, whilst their Gwent Central League side entertain Trevethin at 2.0pm in the first round of the A Jones & Co, Benevolent Open Cup.

Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Football League: Div 3
Govilon AFC 11 Whiteheads AFC 0
Govilon warmed up for next Saturday’s local derby at Abergavenny Thursdays by thumping Whiteheads to record their biggest win of the season so far, with their deadly duo of Morgan and McCarthy grabbing seven of the goals.
Goal machine Morgan opened the scoring after five minutes meeting Richard McCarthy’s defence-splitting pass, and scored a wonder goal moments later lobbing a diagonal shot over the goalkeeper from 20 yards.
Morgan repaid McCarthy sending him through to notch Govilon’s third on 20 minutes, and he saw Morgan set him up again for his second after midfield maestro Chris Lambert sent them both clear. James Powell made one of many foraging runs up field and netted with a low hard shot to the goalkeeper’s left after 35 minutes. Craig Thomas stole inside Whiteheads defence and was just off target, before Whiteheads Graham Smith produced their only real chance of the half when he headed over from a corner.
Govilon were quickly back on the goal trail when Delve in Whiteheads goal attempted to dribble the ball out of the area, only to be dispossessed by Richard McCarthy who had an easy tap-in to complete a hat trick in successive weeks, and more agony continued when Delve could only parry a James Powell strike leaving him to net the rebound for a 7-0 interval lead.
Chris Lambert got onto the score sheet when his goal-bound effort could not be stopped despite a desperate lunge by a defender, and quickly added another, deceiving Delve with a deft flick from close range to make it 9-0. With superior fitness telling Govilon were relentless as Jamie Laurent’s 30 yard pass scythed through the Whitehead defence to reach Morgan who scored to join strike partner McCarthy in the hat trick stakes as Govilon reached double figures. McCarthy was unlucky when his 30 yard pile driver hit the post and rebounded to safety but there was no reprieve in the 85th minute as Morgan shot home his fourth and Govilon’s eleventh.

Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Football League: Div 3
Villa Dino/Christchurch 1 Govilon AFC 9
Govilon travelled to the Liswerry area of Newport for their away fixture with Villa Dino/Chistchurch and came home with the spoils in a tough-tackling affair. Taking time to find their rhythm they found themselves trailing after 25 minutes when Villa Dino’s No 10 found the corner of the net with a well struck header.
This lead was short-lived and Govilon drew level on 30 minutes when Villa Dino’s No 7 fired past his own goalkeeper, Andrew Wainwright. This signalled a surge from Govilon who saw their marksman Dean Morgan’s blistering volley go inches wide, before finding the net as he edged Govilon ahead, and adding to his tally moments later to give Govilon a 3-1 lead.
At the other end, Phil Davies in the Govilon goal dived to his right to deny Villa Dino and Jamie Wilkins was on hand to clear the loose ball from the goal-line.
Morgan’s penetrating runs continued to torment the opposition and when he was fouled after forcing his way into the penalty area, Richard McCarthy stepped up to make no mistake from the spot. Defender Jamie Wilkins was rewarded for his run up-field when he headed into the top corner from a pinpoint Robert Frost cross from the left flank, to give Govilon a 5-1 interval leave.
After the break it was McCarthy’s turn to star, volleying past the hapless Wainwright after 50 minutes and quickly grabbing his hat-trick five minutes later as he piled more misery onto Villa Dino. Strong front running from Morgan, McCarthy and Matthew Ham, latching onto some excellent passing from defence and midfield, saw Morgan grab his hat-trick with an instinctive strike despite the close attention of Villa Dino’s defence. In what was becoming a rout, Govilon could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty, before Morgan added his fourth, as Govilon registered their biggest win of the season so far.

Welsh Autoparts Gwent County Football League: Div 3
Govilon AFC 1 Sudbrook CC 0
Govilon, who saw their reserve side trounce local rivals Crickhowell 16-1 in a mid-day kick off, faced their stiffest test so far this season when they faced a determined Sudbrook side three hours later.
Despite creating many openings which included a brilliant save by Sudbrook’s keeper from a goal-bound Jamie Wilkins header, the match remained goal-less at half time, and followed this pattern after the re-start. Sudbrook’s resistance was finally broken mid-way through the second half when Dean Morgan’s diagonal shot from inside the box found the corner of the net. More Govilon pressure failed to reap any dividend, and in a tense finale Govilon’s defence held firm, as Sudbrook fought to the end.
The match ball sponsor was Whittal Williams Vehicle Hire, Station Road, Abergavenny.

Govilon AFC 8 Underwood AFC 3
Govilon transferred their good early season league form into this first round cup match, and found themselves cruising with goals from Dean Morgan (2), Richard McCarthy and Craig Thomas inside the first half–hour, before two defensive blunders saw Underwood reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Richard McCarthy notched his second to increase Govilon’s lead and Dean Morgan was denied a first half hat trick by the Underwood goalkeeper’s fingertip save. The outcome was all but settled when Underwood conceded an own goal on the stroke of half time to give Govilon a 6-2 interval lead. Morgan and McCarthy continued to torment the Underwood defence after the break. Richard McCarthy shot narrowly wide from Craig Thomas’ pinpoint pass, before Dean Morgan completed his hat trick.
Underwood to their credit kept plugging away and grabbed their third goal shortly before Dean Morgan scored his fourth, as Govilon ran out comfortable winners.
Next Saturday sees two matches at Govilon’s Recreation Ground with Govilon’s Gwent Central League side entertaining local rivals Crickhowell, in a 12.30 pm kick off, while Govilon’s County League side host mid-table Sudbrook, at 3.00pm.
