Gospel Communications - Endorsing the Jesus Minus/Plus Principle

Who is Gospel.com? Gospel Communications preaches the gospel through media. As such, they endorse websites as well. Every notice that gold Gospel.com label on your favorite (or not so favorite) ministry’s website? That’s the Gospel Communications endorsement.

What is the Jesus Minus/Plus Principle? When I was a young Christian in my twenties, I had a terrific older mentor who told me, "If it is Jesus minus something or Jesus plus something, it isn’t the Gospel."

How does Gospel Communications endorse the Jesus Minus and Plus Principle? In order to be blessed with the golden Gospel.com endorsement, a ministry must accept Gospel Communication’s statement of faith. Their statement of faith lacks the statement of salvation through Jesus Christ by faith alone - that is the minus. The minus allows for the plus - salvation must be maintained by association and works. Who is the plus that Gospel Communications endorses? The Roman Catholic Church of course! How do I know this? An e-mail from Mr. Brian Atkinson of Gospel Communications states that Gospel Communications has no problems with Roman Catholic Church doctine. Please read the cut-and-paste e-mail trail below:

Hi Tod,

But since that does not actually impact salvation, it's not an issue. As I stated - 1-6 are our salvation issues and the RC agrees with those. #7 is our own preference, and not something that all churches or denominations must subscribe to. Again, thanks for your comments.

Mr. Atkinson: The Roman Catholic Church fails point number seven on your statement of faith. Pope Benedick VXI has recently affirmed that Vatican II states that there is no salvation for those outside of the Roman Catholic Church. Not much unity with this statement, is there?

Dear Tod, Thank you for your thoughts and I appreciate that you feel comfortable to share them with us. Gospel Communications is a non-denominational entity whose mission is to preach the Gospel, world-wide, using media. That media includes a variety of film and internet projects, including our internet ministry alliance community. Members of that community subscribe to a statement of faith and the Navigators affirms that with each contract, every two years.

Our Statement of Faith

1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God.

2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.

4. We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for the salvation of lost and sinful people.

5. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by Whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live the Godly life.

6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost - those who are saved to the resurrection of life, and those who are lost to the resurrection of condemnation.

7. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ and the evidence of that unity being shown by how we love one another.

Since Roman Catholicism does not conflict with our statement of faith, protestants and catholics can gather around the things that we share, rather than the ways that we are different. As it says in our 7th point above, "the evidence of that unity being shown by how we love one another" we will not exclude a denomination simply because of a preference. However if there were a problem with a salvation issue as expressed in the Statement of Faith, points 1-6, that would be a different matter altogether. Thanks again for your time and your thoughts.

Subject: The Navigators Catholic Ministry

Dear Gospel.Com: I note your icon on The Navigator website as Gospel.com Alliance Member. I reviewed your website and have determined that you are serious about the Gospel. For this reason I am drawing your attention to the Navigator Catholic Ministry. No, this is not a ministry of sharing the Gospel with Catholics, rather a Catholic ministry purporting Roman Catholicism. You may want to reconsider your affiliation with the Navigators. Please review my website regarding the Navigator Catholic Ministry. http://www.freewebs.com/gospelfocus/thenavigators.htm

In Christ, Tod Zechiel Winter Haven, FL

Mr. Atkinson talks right out of the Evangelicals and Catholics Together play book by not defining the Gospel, assuming there is salvation in Catholic doctrine, pointing out similarities between Protestants and Catholics and taking the stance "Hey, the similarities are close enough for our endorsement. And that point about no salvation outside the Catholic Church - that really is not a salvation issue." So, does your ministry have the Gospel.com endorsement?
