HEY EVERYONE!  THE ORDINANCE PASSED!              

ST. AUGUSTINE DOGS WILL BE GOING OUT TO DINNER!

This week, with a 4-1 vote, St. Augustine City Commissioners passed an ordinance allowing restaurants to set up designated outside dining areas for their two and four-legged patrons.

The ordinance goes into effect on Friday, 1 August.  It is part of a three-year pilot program under a state statute, which will end in 11 months.

Like everything else in life, there are rules, and here they are:

• Restaurants choosing to participate in the program, must obtain a city permit.
• All breeds are to be allowed in the designated outside area of participating restaurants.
•  Employees will not be allowed to pet the dogs.   This is especially true for those handling food.
•  Sanitary soap will be placed on each table where the dogs are permitted.
• The restaurants must provide doggy bags for those “accidents” that are bound to happen, and restaurant employees must immediately clean the area with disinfectant.

In 11 months, the statute will be reviewed and it will be decided whether or not to make it permanent.

Let’s hope St. Augustine residents and guests are mature enough to handle this.
