Welcome to our Site

Before you go any further into the site here is a little history about

GO MARU DEFENCE

The club started life as the St Andrew's Church Hall Karate Club way back in 1999, it was run by Ronnie Bronson and David Jenkinson of the Northern Karate Association (N.K.A).

Back then I was just a single parent looking for something for my three children to do to keep them off the streets and I had heard about the karate club!

So I took all three along, and they loved it, in fact they took to it like a duck to water. I was at that time a watching parent, well at least for about six months. Then I thought what the heck! I used to do a bit of Wing Chung (for about six months at the age of 15). I liked that and this looked just as good. I started and within a few months I noticed I was a lot fitter

A couple of years later I got my 3rd Kyu and Assistant Instructors License and started to help out in the lessons. It was good and I found I had a "nak" for it.

Then Dave Jenkinson took ill and I started to take the Sunday lesson on my own as Ronnie had other commitments. It became clear that it was going to take Dave a lot longer than we hoped for him to get back to running the club (Dave is now running his other club's) so I was asked if I would like to take the Club over full time.

I had the backing of the N.K.A and if I did not do it the Club would have to close and all of my children were still doing Karate there, and doing very well, with one of them a 1st Dan (Black Belt) and the others getting there. I could not really say no.

I took over the full time running of the Club on the 5th October 2002.

At that time I changed the name of the Club to GO MARU KARATE, which means FIVE CIRCLES, EMPTY HAND in Japanese. It comes from the two tattoo's I have, one of the Shotokan symbol and the other of the Ying and Yan symbol (which we put together to make our patch).

The Club was slow to start off with as some of the student's left to go to other N.K.A Club's, so I was left with about five student's and that included my children!.

After about three month's it just seemed to take off and now we have over 40 members ranging from 10th Kyu right up to 1st Dan (yes, the 1st Dan is one of my children), we also have a few 1st Kyu's

Not only are we doing very well, we now have another Club in Felling with 15 members. We hold a Black Belt class, and another club in Wardley with 12 members.

Well it's 2007 now and we are going strong, i now have nearly 100 student and 5 karate clubs and 1 self defence club.   All my children are still doing Karate and all are now Black Belts.

I am now a member of : N.K.A, N.A.K.M.A.S, I.A.O.M.A.S, B.B.I. C,M,I,A.

The BIG news for 2007 is, that i have packed in work and am now doing this "Martial Arts" as my full time business.

I passed my 1st Dan on the 22nd November 2003 at my second attempt.

I passed my Black Belt in the Cane, with the Canemasters on the 11th August 2007

SENSEI MICK'S  GRADE's TO DATE;    NIDAN ( 2nd DAN ) Shotokan Karate , SHODAN ( Black Belt ) in the Cane Self Defence Tool.

ABOUT THE STUDENT BASE.

The student base in the Leam Lane Dojo is made up of mostly children and young adults aged between 4 and 18yrs old of both sexes, with a Very good handful of adults.

The student base in the Felling Dojo is made up of all children as is the Wardley but adults turn up to train sometimes welcome.

The student base in Windy Nook Dojo is made of of all Children but sometimes we get an adult or two from one of the other club, so adults are welcome

The Bill Quay Dojo is mostly Children

We like to put the students in to the two competitions that the N.K.A hold every year one is a friendly between the members of the N.K.A which has over 1200 members and the other is an open competition.

The club also has social nights including Christmas Party, Halloween Party, presentation nights with a Disco and tuck shop (Bar for the adults)

We also try to have events on in the summer holiday for example, training in the park or at the Beach and quizzes.
