Julia Kim experiences a Eucharist Miracle
Naju, Korea
September 22, 1995

Bishop's testimony Julia's testimony
Words of Jesus

EPARCHY OF TORONTO
(Ukrainian Catholic)
Apostolic Administrator
Chancery Office

Naju, Korea, September 22, 1995

Sworn Testimony of Witnesses of Miraculous transformation of Consecrated Host and Wine, changing into living and moving flesh and blood, when Julia Kim received Holy Communion during the Celebration of the Eucharist at the open air Mass, celebrated in the field of the valley amidst the mountains outside Naju, at 5 p.m. on September 22, 1995.

I, Bishop Roman Danylak, Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Toronto for Ukrainian Catholics in Toronto, Canada, and titular bishop of Nyssa, herewith solemnly testify that I concelebrated the Divine Liturgy, or Holy Mass, with the Reverend Fathers Aloysius Chang, parish priest of the Kwangju Archdiocese in Korea, invited by me to assist during my visit to Korea; and Joseph Peter Finn, retired priest of the Diocese of London, Canada, on Friday, September 22, at 5 p.m. in an open air celebration on the grounds of the valley where a future church is to be erected, God-willing, to the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Mother of God.

Following the Liturgy of the Word, I delivered a brief homily for the occasion. After the communion of the priests, Fr. Chang and I administered Holy Communion under both species to Julia Kim and the eleven others.. As we continued the distribution of Holy Communion to the others present, we heard a sudden sobbing of one of the women assisting at Mass. The Sacred Host received by Julia was changed to living flesh and blood. Father Joseph Finn , who had remained at the altar during the communion of the faithful, was observing Julia; he noted that at the moment he turned to observe Julia, he saw the white edge of the host disappearing and changing into the substance of living flesh.

Fr. Chang and I returned to Julia. The host had changed to dark red, living flesh and blood flowing from it. After Mass, Julia shared with us that she experienced the Divine Flesh as a thick consistency and a copious flowing of blood, more so than on the occasion of previous miracles of the changing of the host into bleeding flesh. We remained in-silence and prayer; all present had the opportunity of viewing and venerating the miraculous host. After some moments I asked Julia to swallow and consume the host. And after the Mass Julia explained that the Host had become large and fleshy; and that she consumed it with some difficulty.

The taste of blood remained in her mouth for some time. I then asked that she be given a glass of water., from the miraculous source of water nearby. As she drank the waters her finger touched her lips, and a trace of blood was visible on her finger. She rinsed her finger in the water and drank it.

In testimony of this, I append my signature, together with the signatures of all the witnesses present.

Dated at Naju, this 22nd day of September, 1995

Post Scriptum:
After Mass and thanksgiving, one of the women present, Michaeline from Tejan, gave testimony to a miraculous healing she had experienced at the time of the Consecration at this Mass. Over the previous ten days she had been suffering from intense back and shoulder pains. She was to go to the hospital for medical examination the following Monday. It was she that had cried out suddenly and began to sob, during the time of communion,, when she observed Julia sucking her cheeks when she had received the host and had drunk from the chalice. Michaeline realized that the host was changing in Julia's mouth.

Eucharistic Miracle in Naju, South Korea,
September 22, 1995

Testimony of Julia Kim

Bishop Roman Danylak of Toronto, Ontario (Canada) celebrated Mass on the mountain together with Fr. Joseph Peter Finn, S.T.D., from Ontario, Canada, and a Korean priest. Sixteen lay people attended the Mass. We received Communion under both species. The moment I received both species in my mouth, I felt the Host and the Precious Blood become mixed and the Host beginning to swell. At the same time I smelled a strong odor of blood, and the Sacred Host began moving. One of the faithful saw this and reported it to Bishop Danylak. The bishop observed this phenomenon together with the others present.. A while later Bishop Danylak instructed me to swallow the Host. I swallowed the Host with much difficulty, because it had changed into a piece of flesh, and had become larger. We were crying and entered into prayerful meditation; a light came down from heaven and the voice of Jesus, at once warm and loving, and full of dignity and majesty, made itself heard, even though I could not see Him.

Words of Jesus

"My beloved little soul!

The greatest treasure in My Church is My most holy Mother Mary. My Mother is the Queen of the Universe, the Mother of Heaven and also your Mother. This is why My Mother Mary loves you as I have loved you; and she can do anything that I can do, through me and by my grace. Today My Mother, who is the Mother of Heaven and your Mother, and through this my little and inadequate soul (Julia) is now revealing and showing My Heart to a bishop, who seeks to follow Me and My Mother as a child, so that he can make ever more known that I am really present in the Eucharist, the sublime mystery of faith and love.

If my priests, who celebrate Mass daily, would truly believe in and seek to experience this Presence with their whole heart and would live the sublime and marvelous Divine Reality such as it is, innumerable souls would be purified and would live in my merciful heart with a grace that is beyond all expectations.

Make haste to make my real Presence known.

Apostasy and infidelity are bringing this world to the brink of ruin; too many of my representatives continue to sleep. In truth, my representatives even allow themselves to be seduced by false prophets. The present disorders continuously torment me; they rend my heart; they become the lashes that endlessly tear the Sacred and Immaculate Heart of My Mother.

O souls whom I have called! You will experience incomprehension and persecutions within my Church that has been wounded and divided; but I shall always abide in you to encourage and to help you. I shall always remain at your side. You need not fear; but only trust in me and proclaim Me who live in the Eucharist.

There are many priests and a great number of my children who claim to know that I live and breathe in the Eucharist, that I am present body and blood, with my soul and my divinity; but they do not really know me well. They were shown my living presence several times through my little soul (Julia). Notwithstanding this, even now those of my children, who follow Me are very few.

Many ecclesiastics want to make me known through sophisticated arguments and complex reasoning, forgetting the Eucharist, which is My substance, and the sublime simplicity of the Gospels which I proclaim. This is like throwing mud at simple people.

My dearly beloved children, do not reject My plea which I make under this form, Me, who am truly present in the Eucharist.

If people, notwithstanding everything, - do not want to understand the signs (that I am giving), - do not follow My Will to bestow Love upon them, -if they deny the divine character (of God's manifestations) then they will face the wrath of God the Father.

Because My Mother's loving and kind words for the past several centuries have been ignored, sin has reached a saturation point even in the Church.

Make haste to begin living a life of devotion through prayer, sacrifices, penance, so that you may attain the final victory and to make acts of reparation for the most abominable sins of blasphemy that have been committed. And if you follow My Mother Mary in order to restore My honor, that has been trampled upon, you will not be lost even in the dark maze of life in this world. My Mother Mary is the short cut to Me, a shining dawn of My renewed Church, and the ark of a new covenant.

My children who follow and proclaim My messages, Proclaim me, and as you pray do not worry about what your critics may think. Their thoughts will dispel as quickly as clouds in the sky, when the hand of God rests over you.

I bless you and all those who are dear to you."

Behold the Lamb of God...

Inexplicable Eucharistic Phenomena

The Bleeding Host of Betania

"There will be chaos in the Church. Tranquility will not return until the Pope succeeds in anchoring the boat of Peter between the twin pillars of Eucharistic devotion and devotion to Our Lady. This will come about one year before the end of the (20th) century."

Saint John Bosco, 1862

This prophetic statement by Saint John Bosco, the Italian priest and mystic who founded the Salesians, puts into context the other principal supernatural phenomena occuring in the late Twentieth century - Eucharistic miracles. For, in addition to the numerous reports of visions and locutions purportedly coming from the Mother of Jesus, there have been a startling number of visible and recordable events recently reported relating to the sudden appearance of a reddish fluid on Communion Hosts consecrated during the celebration of Catholic Mass. Phenomena such as these have occurred before in history but never at the frequency presently being reported. Before detailing these events, it might be useful to provide a brief overview of the origins of Catholic belief in the Eucharist and outline just what the Catholic Church teaches about the act of consecration and the changes in the characteristics of the Host that occur as a result of this consecration.

The Scriptural Basis of the Eucharist

The Catholic Church traces the origins of the Eucharist to the very actions and words of Jesus Christ Himself as recorded in the three synoptic Gospels, the gospel of Saint John and as described by Saint Paul in the New Testament. The use of bread and wine as an offering begins under the Old Covenant as described in the Book of Genesis:

"And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High."
Genesis 14:18

As they began their exodus from Egypt, the Jews ate unleavened bread (Exodus 12:15), made necessary because of their haste to flee, and they continue to this day to honor this occasion with unleavened bread when they celebrate Passover; the last "cup of blessing" at the end of the Passover meal was a cup of wine used to celebrate the fact that God had blessed His chosen people and would bless them again someday in Jerusalem. They ate manna - bread sent from Heaven - as they wandered the desert in search of the Promised Land, finally settling there as God had promised them. After they lost their land because of their continued failure to keep the Commandments of God, they were sent prophets who predicted that a Messiah would be sent by God, a saviour who would bring them back to their original place of honor before God. He arrived about 2,000 years ago.

Jesus' life began in Beth-Lechem...the House of Bread (Matthew 2:1). His first public miracle was at a wedding party in Cana (John 2:2-5), where He turned water into wine in response to a request by His mother. With the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves (Matthew 14:14-20), as Jesus blessed the loaves of bread and distributed them, He prefigured the superabundance of the unique bread that was to be His Eucharist. After teaching and healing the sick and working other wonders in the hills of the Galilee, Jesus had developed a wide following with many disciples. It was at the synagogue of Capernaum, at the time of the feast of Passover, that Jesus began to unfold the nature of His Eucharist to those who were following Him:

"Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on Him has God the Father set His seal."
John 6:27

When His followers asked about the nature of this eternal food, Jesus replied:

"I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst."
John 6:35
When they heard this remark, some of His followers began to murmur among themselves since they knew He was just a carpenter, the son of Joseph. How could this man be the bread of life? Yet Jesus persisted as He explained Himself to them:

"I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh."
John 6:51

This comment brought outright consternation to a number of those who had followed Him. He was actually telling them that they had to eat His flesh, an unthinkable act. If His words were confusing or misleading them in any way, then He would have corrected their misunderstanding...but He didn't. Instead, He emphasized yet again His meaning when He said:

"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him."
John 6:53-56

Many of those who heard Jesus say this couldn't accept it despite the fact that He explained and further clarified His statements three times in attempting to address their lack of understanding and their unwillingness to accept His words. He tried again a fourth time to help them comprehend what He was saying:

"It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life."
John 6:63

After saying this, many of those who had been following Him chose to stay away. He tried four times to teach them and in the end only a few accepted His teachings. Why didn't they comprehend Jesus, as many still don't comprehend Him after 2,000 years? Probably because they didn't understand that Jesus was the completion of the Passover begun in Egypt over a thousand years earlier. He was the New Covenant, the Promised One - the Messiah - but He didn't fit into the contemporary concept of what the Messiah should be. Passover was commemorated by a meal - a sharing of unleavened bread, lamb and wine - and Jesus had come to give them Himself as the ultimate Bread and Lamb, a meal to be consumed by all who wished to escape from the angel of Death.

During the ritual of the Passover meal, there were four different cups of blessing consumed along with unleavened bread and lamb. The lamb was chosen after it was slain without breaking any of its bones and then cooked and eaten to renew the bond of communion between God and His chosen people. The blood of this lamb, spread across the lintel of each household, was placed there as a sign to the angel of Death to pass over the house so marked and protect each of the first-born who were members of the household. Jesus came to complete the Passover so that all could pass over from death into eternal life. And just as the Jews at the time of Moses had to eat the unleavened bread and the sacrificial lamb to renew their communion with God, so all were being asked to eat the body and drink the blood of God's new lamb (Jesus) to renew their communion with Him and be marked with the sign of eternal life.

Jesus instituted His Eucharist at the Passover meal that was to mark His passing through death into Resurrection and everlasting life. It was in these words that Jesus inaugurated His Eucharist:

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." And He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you; for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
Matthew 26:26-28

Clearly Jesus said that He was giving His followers His body and blood. It wasn't meant as a symbol as many of His followers at Capernaum would have liked to believe - it was totally Him. But did His disciples really believe that it was Jesus' body and blood? Saint Paul clearly states the beliefs of Jesus' first disciples:

"Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgement upon himself."
1 Corinthians 11:27-29

Saint Paul was not the only early follower of Jesus who wrote of this belief and practice. Dozens wrote about it in the first few hundred years of the Church's existence. This belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist continues to this day in Catholic worship and mainstream theology. Catholic understanding of Jesus' presence in the Eucharist is different than most other Christian denominations which tend to see the eucharistic meal as a symbolic rememberance rather than a real and substantial transformation.

Perhaps the best way for the modern mind to attempt to come to grips with the mystery of the Eucharist is by analogy. Here's one analogy that might help in opening us up to the unfathomable grace that Jesus gives each of us in the Eucharist:

Let's suppose you had a wafer of bread and you exposed it to a source of non-visible, sub-atomic radiation for one minute. Would the bread be the same as it was before this exposure? Remember, nothing that was obvious to your senses took place when the bread was exposed to the radiation...yet we now know that the bread is not the same as it was before. It has changed at the atomic level and there are now some radioactive atoms that make up part of this substance. However, the change that took place can only be perceived with special instrumentation that extends the range of our senses. If you lived two hundred years ago for example, you would not be able to ascertain any change in the bread and would likely think that anyone who told you that the bread was really different was slightly deranged!! Yet it REALLY has been changed. If you ate it you might even get radiation sickness!!

In the Eucharist that Jesus gave us we have a more profound change that takes place. The bread and wine is REALLY changed into Jesus' body and blood. Can we ordinarily tell this with our senses? No. We need something that extends beyond our senses to determine the actual state that exists. That extender of our senses is Faith, a faith and trust in Jesus that believes that if He says it, then even ordinary bread and wine can be changed into His body and blood...and by His words recorded in the Gospels, He clearly says it four different times!!

Eucharistic Miracles in Catholic Church History

With this outline of the supernatural nature of the Eucharist as background, a look at the 2,000 year history of the Catholic Church for evidence of Jesus' real presence in the Eucharist that's observable to the ordinary senses should be instructive. Reports of "bleeding" hosts, hosts that appear to levitate in the air by themselves, and other inexplicable phenomena occur sporadically in Catholic historical literature, starting in about 250 AD in the writings of Saint Cyprian. He wrote about one of the apostates living in his time that while attempting "to open the tabernacle in which the body of the Lord was preserved, sees flames issuing forth."The following are a few of the dozens of reports of Eucharistic miracles from the past:

Lanciano, Italy

In 8th Century Italy, in the village of what is now Lanciano, there was a monastery named St. Longinus. A monk who had begun to have real doubts about Jesus' real presence in the Eucharist was celebrating Mass at the monastery. As he spoke the words of the consecration the host changed into a circle of "flesh" surrounding the remaining Eucharist and the wine transformed into visible "blood". The "flesh" remained intact but the "blood" subsequently divided into five separate globules. The monk was reinvigourated in his faith as he witnessed this transformation. He later decided to weigh the "blood" globules and found to his amazement that any combination of the globules was equal in weight to any other combination and that the smallest globule weighed exactly the same as the largest - clearly defying any natural explanation. The "flesh" and "blood" have been maintained in special containers housed in the monastery and its successors ever since. In a modern evaluation of this "flesh" and "blood" conducted by several Italian university professors in 1970 under rigorous conditions, they found the following:

  • the container that held the "flesh" was not hermetically sealed so that the Eucharistic host at the center of the "flesh" was no longer present. Further, the "blood" globules had hardened and no unusual weight differences were noted.
  • samples were taken of both the "flesh" and the "blood" and were sent to a number of laboratories for microscopic, biochemical and other scientific evaluation.
  • the "flesh" was found to be striated muscular tissue of the myocardium (the wall of the heart), of human origin and contained absolutely no trace of any substances that could have been used to preserve it. It was Flesh indeed!
  • the "blood" sample was found to be human blood, type AB. The flesh was found to be of the same type as well.It was truly Blood!
  • the proteins found in the blood sample were consistent with proteins found in fresh human blood.
  • Despite the fact that the container housing the flesh and blood from the Eucharist was not hermetically sealed, the samples were not at all damaged and could have been taken from a fresh cadaver. Thus, for more than 1200 years the physical reality of Jesus real presence in the Eucharist has been preserved for all to observe and renew their faith.

There are more than two dozen documented reports of similar Eucharistic miracles occurring throughout Europe between the 10th and 15th centuries and dozens more since then with many of them having enclosed the flesh and blood samples in special containers where they can still be seen today.

    Bolsena, Italy

In 1263 Peter of Prague, a German priest, was celebrating Mass at the Church of Saint Christina in Bolsena. He had been entertaining serious doubts about the reality of Christ's presence in the consecrated Host. As he completed the words of Consecration blood started to seep from the Consecrated Host and run down over his hands onto the altar and the altar communion linen (corporal). Seeing this, he interrupted the Mass and traveled quickly to Orvieto, where Pope Urban IV was then residing. On hearing his story, the Pope forgave him for having doubts and sent representatives to Bolsena to investigate. Parishioners and others confirmed the priest's story and the host and stained linens were there for all to see. Their investigation, when completed, confirmed all that the priest had related. One year later, in August 1264 Pope Urban instituted the feast of Corpus Christi (Body of Christ).

    Stich, Germany

In the Bavarian region of Germany, near the Swiss border, lie three hamlets the smallest of which is Stich. On the evening of June 9, 1970, as a visiting priest from Switzerland was celebrating a Tridentine Mass (Mass in Latin celebrated under the rubrics of the Council of Trent)in the chapel, an unusual series of events occurred. After the Consecration, the celebrant noticed that a small reddish spot began to appear on the corporal at the place where the chalice had been resting. Wondering if the chalice had begun to leak, the priest ran his hand under the chalice, but found it completely dry. By this time the small spot had spread to be about the size of a dime. After completing the Mass the priest inspected everything on the altar but could find no source of anything that could remotely be a source for the reddish stain. He locked the corporal containing the stain in a safe place until he could discuss the matter with the pastor.

On June 11th, after examining the corporal with the pastor, the cloth was photographed and sent to the Clinical Institute for Radial Therapy and Nuclear Medicine and the Polyclinical Institute of the University of Zurich for chemical analysis. The results of four separate analyses conducted on the cloth samples indicated that the cause of the stain was human blood that contained some of the biochemical markers of a man in agony.

On July 14th, the phenomena repeated itself at the chapel in Stich with four stains appearing on the corporal after the Consecration. Several days later, the pastor sent the corporal with the stains to the District Hospital at Cercee for analysis - the results: the stains were human blood!! One of the witnesses to this event, Joseph Talscher, the sacristan of the chapel, reported the following:

"On the evening of July 14, Father was celebrating Holy Mass in the chapel of Stich. Mindful of what had happened on June 9, we made certain that the cloths covering the altar were spotlessly clean...after taking Holy Communion, the priest made a sign to me and pointed to the altar. Then I saw the stains. After Mass we all took a closer look at the cloths and especially the large stain which was the size of a priest's host. We saw a cross very distinctly on it."

    Eucharistic Phenomena of the 1990's

There are several alternative explanations for communion hosts turning a reddish color, the most common of which is the presence of the bacterium serratia marcescens. Serratia marcescens grows readily on starchy foodstuffs and looks like a reddish, bloody coloration to ordinary visual inspection. It looks substantially different under microscopic examination and can be distinguished readily from human blood. Without testing for the presence of human blood, it's difficult to be certain that this bacterium isn't involved. After eliminating reports of Eucharistic phenomena that could be attributed to the presence of this bacteria, there are still a number of reports of Eucharistic phenomena that merit attention coming from all over the world in the 1990's - a number never before witnessed in the history of the Church in such a short time period. The more well known of these are described in the following:

  • Betania, Venezuela - an inexplicable event occurred in Betania, Venezuela - site of a series of remarkable Marian Apparitions - on the vigil of the feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1991. Father Otty Ossa, chaplain of the Betania site and spiritual director of the Marian visionary Maria Esperanza, was saying Mass in the open air chapel next to the grotto, when the host began to bleed in his hands after the consecration. Fr. Otty explained:

"I broke the Host into four parts. When I looked down at the plate I could not believe my eyes. I saw a red stain forming on the Host and from it a red substance was beginning to eminate similar to the way blood spurts out in a puncture."

This event was videotaped, photographed and subject to intense evaluation by the local episcopate. They later determined that it was human blood.

  • Worcester, Massachusetts has been the site of a series of inexplicable events surrounding a twelve year old girl who was brain-damaged in a swimming pool accident when she was 3 years old. Unable to walk or talk the girl, Audrey Santo, has become the focus of a growing number of Catholic mystical experiences. For the past nine years the only solid food she has eaten has been the Holy Communion which she receives daily. Several years ago, the local Bishop permitted the Blessed Sacrament to be reserved in a tabernacle housed in Audrey's room. On several different occasions the two gold engraved angels on the tabernacle door have wept fragrant oil. The oil has been examined by several different chemical labs but its makeup and origin is still unknown. Religious statues and pictures in Audrey's room have wept oil and sometimes blood...reminiscent of the Marian apparitions in Damascus, Syria.

On three occasions, the Consecrated Host taken from the tabernacle has dripped a reddish fluid. The fluid has been examined by an independent testing laboratory and found to be human blood. On Good Friday 1996, the tabernacle in Audrey's room began bleeding. Audrey herself now has the stigmata - the visible wounds of Jesus. Visitors to her room have reported inexplicable healings and spiritual conversions. At least three of Audrey's nurses, who were not Catholics when they first began to care for her, have since converted to Catholicism.

In Audrey's case, God has chosen a severely injured little girl to be one of His messengers to the world. He has given her multiple manifestations of His love and concern for her and for each of us. He wants us to know that it is He who comes to us in the Eucharist..it is He who wants us with Him for all eternity.

  • Marlboro, New Jersey has been the site of purported Marian apparitions for nearly ten years. On April 10, 1994, the feast of Divine Mercy, Father Robert Rooney, the spiritual director of the visionary, was celebrating morning Mass in nearby Yardville, New Jersey at Saint Vincent de Paul Church. As he raised the Host and said the words of consecration, blood flowed out of the Eucharist. The altar boys present and a number of parishioners saw this occur and Father Rooney was understandably shaken by the bleeding host. After showing the Host to the parish priest, it was decided that the Host should be retained in the tabernacle until the head of the local Episcopate, Bishop Reiss, could decide what actions should be taken. Several days later the Bishop decided not to investigate the phenomena and Fr. Rooney gave the Host to his spiritual director Father Valenta.

Father Valenta had the Host photographed and then examined by two medical doctors using non-invasive microscopic analysis. Non-invasive techniques were used since a bishop's approval is required for any invasive examination. The doctors stated:

"There is no scientific explanation, the red material came from within the Host and it has the microscopic characteristics of human blood; the Church must make the determination as to any miracle."

On June 6, 1994, the feast of Corpus Christi, Father Rooney stated that the Blessed Virgin appeared, in her first and only appearance to him, in his dining room and told him that her Son had sent him a gift - the gift of the bleeding Host - and from now on his spiritual director would take care of everything. Father Rooney died six weeks later on July 16, 1996 - the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Father Valenta delivered the bloody Host to Bishop Reiss of the Diocese of Trenton where it still resides.

  • Methuen, Massachusetts was the site of another inexplicable Eucharistic phenomena in 1995. In preparing to distribute Communion, a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church opened the tabernacle to discover a Consecrated Host "bleeding" inside. The host was transfered to a container, apparently still bleeding, and retained there for further examination. Aside from a number of witnesses who observed the bleeding Host, the Host itself was sent to Dr. B. Lipinski, a biochemist, for non-invasive examination. He ascertained that the reddish substance was human blood. With this determination, a small sample of the crusted blood was sent to the California Laboratory of Forensic Sciences. After several preliminary tests confirmed the presence of blood, on August 30, 1995, a crossover electrophoresis was conducted on the sample which unequivocally identified the reddish substance as human blood. The local bishop is presently evaluating all the circumstances surrounding the appearance of this blood.

  • Rome, Italy has recently been the site of reports of its own set of inexplicable phenomena related to the Eucharist. Since 1971, an Italian Marian visionary, Marisa Rossi, has purportedly been receiving locutions and signs from Our Blessed Mother asking for humanity to change its ways and return to God - particularly in the Eucharist. These apparitions changed in character in the mid-90's when Marisa took part in an inexplicable Eucharistic event on September 14, 1995 - the feast of the Exultation of the Cross. After praying in the chapel, Marisa, who is wheelchair-bound, stood and kissed the crucifix which Don Claudio Gatti had removed from the altar in preparation for a procession. Marisa said she saw a Host emerge from the side of the corpus on the cross and fall into her hand. Many around her noticed the Host which had not been there moments before. Another apparently inexplicable Eucharistic event occured in April of 1996 when Marisa was photographed as a Host suddenly appears in her outstretched hands during a purported apparition of the Blessed Virgin.

  • Barbeau, Michigan may have been the site of an inexplicable Eucharistic event on February 4, 1996. During Mass at the Church of the Holy Family, an inexperienced Eucharistic minister dropped a Host onto a patent (a plate used to catch particles of consecrated Host). Believing that this Host had to be placed in an ablution cup, the minister informed the priest of this despite the fact that the Host hadn't touched either the ground or a communicant. The Host remained in the cup for a week because inclement weather prevented any weekday Masses. The following Sunday, February 11th, a dime-sized red coloration was seen on the surface of the Host. The Host, which had been in water to help disolve it, was engorged with water but otherwise retained its shape. The local bishop, who was advised of these developments via telephone, suggested to the parish priest, Father Mark A. McQuesten, that the coloration was probably due to a fungus growing on the Host and that it should be disposed of in the approved manner. The priest continued to show the Host to his parishioners and had it photographed as well. The local news media picked up the story several weeks later and after another call from the Bishop, Fr. McQuesten finally touched of the Host for the first time on February 26th. He planned to dispose of it in the manner authorized by the Church. However, he stated that when he touched it, it felt like flesh, that he had to tear at it in order to rip it - not at all what one would expect from a water-logged piece of unleavened bread. During all this time the Host never lost its shape or the red coloration it first displayed nearly a month earlier.

  • These are only a few of the many reports of inexplicable Eucharistic phenomena presently occuring around the world that are being evaluated by local episcopal and medical authorities. This concentration of Eucharistic phenomena, if substantiated, is unprecedented in Catholic Church history. The combination of the outpouring of Marian apparitions and this awesome display of Eucharistic love would appear to be setting the stage for the most remarkable period of faith conversion in modern history. It would appear as though Saint John Bosco's prophecy is about to be fulfilled within the next three years!! Let us pray that the world doesn't continue to battle the emergence of God's supernatural love into our daily lives - because that is a battle the world will surely lose!!

    The Eucharistic Miracle of Santarem

    13th Century A.D.

Sometime between 1225 or 1247 there was a woman living in Santarem (Portugal), who was very unhappy. She was convinced that her husband did not love her, and was unfaithful. She tried all the wiles known to women from the days of Eve, but to no avail. As a desperate last attempt, she went to a sorceress. The sorceress promised the wife that her husband would return to his loving ways, if the wife would bring her a Consecrated Host.

This greatly frightened the woman. She knew it was sacrilege. She was also convinced that the sorceress was up to no good. The wife didn't know what to do. She finally gave in. She went to Mass at the Church of St. Steven, and received Communion, but did not consume the Host. Instead, she left the Church immediately, and took the Host out of her mouth, putting It into a kerchief. She then headed for the Sorceress.

Along the way, the Host began to bleed inside the kerchief. The wife was not aware of it until passersby brought it to her attention, thinking she was bleeding. Panic struck the heart of the woman. She went home, and put the kerchief and the Host in the bottom of a trunk. She waited all day and into night in fear. When her husband came home late that night, she was sitting in the dark. They went to bed. We doubt whether she slept very much. The guilt of her sin plagued her. She also didn't know if the Host had continued to bleed.

Sometime during the night, they were awakened by bright rays of light coming from the trunk, which lit up the entire room. The wife confessed her sin to her husband. The two of them spent the rest of the night on their knees in adoration before the Miraculous Host. The next day, people came to the house, attracted by the light. They witnessed the miracle for themselves. The parish priest was told. He came to the house, and heard the story from the woman. He brought the Host back to the Church in solemn procession. Encasing It in a wax container, he placed the Host into the tabernacle.

Another miracle occurred. The next time the priest opened the tabernacle door, the wax container had broken into thousands of pieces. In its place was a crystal container with the blood of the Host inside. It has been kept in that church until today. The Church has been renamed, "The Church of the Miracle." The little house where the miracle occurred was on Via delle Stuoie in Santarem. From the time of the miracle until now, every year, on the Second Sunday of April, the incident is re-enacted by local actors. The actual Eucharistic Miracle is processed from the house, which was converted into a Chapel in 1684, to the Church.

    Background

In the spring of 1995, Pasquale Galtieri began remodeling a small home in Constantia, New York for the purpose of selling it. However, believing that the property belonged to God, Pat and his wife, Beverly, asked Ken Hamlin, their brother-in-law, to help erect outside Stations of the Cross on the property and very soon Pat and other volunteers began to turn the little home into a House of Prayer.

During the winter of 1993, Bev spoke with visionary/mystic, Emma de Guzman and Sol Gaviola regarding the miracle of the oiling statues at their Kingston, Ontario residence. On January 1, 1994, Pat and Bev, along with their good friend, Joe Robichaud, were privileged to meet Emma and Sol at their residence; at that time they picked up their statue of the Infant of Prague which had begun exuding oil there on December 28, 1993, the Feast of the Holy Innocents. The statue continued to oil for another week and to this day the fragrance of oil remains on the statue.

On two occasions in 1995, in particular, October 29, 1995, Emma and Sol visited the House of Prayer in Constantia. At 1:00 A.M. the Blessed Mother appeared to Emma with the following message which was recorded by Sol Gaviola:

Good morning my dear little children. God the Father allowed me once again to come down on earth to be with you at this hour. This is the place which I choose to be the place of my presence. This is the place that my Son wants to be named "Our Mother of Joy House of Prayer"

You are my disciples called to spread the light of my motherly presence and help my children to walk along the road to reach my son Jesus Christ. This is a special day for my little children and so I want you to feel at your sides the saints and blessed heaven, to offer you protection and guidance.

Thank you very much for your patience. I am your Mother of Joy, whom you gave a greater joy to my Immaculate Heart. May God bless you my beloved children. Good morning to you all.

I will give something special to my child, Beverly and company when she goes to your place. I love you my dear childern."

On November 4, 1995, Pat, Bev and Joe Robichaud visited Emma and Sol in Canada and received five roses which they witnessed Emma gather as they emerged from the center of her chest. Three of the roses are preserved at the home of Pat and Bev.

Emma de Guzman, visionary/mystic/reader of souls--gifted with the stigmata for nine years--has received numerous apparitions and locutions from our Blessed Mother, Santo Nino (Holy Child Jesus), St. John the Evangelist, St. Theresa of the Child Jesus (Little Flower), St. Theresa of Avila, Padre Pio, and other saints. Several of these messages were received by Emma at Mother of Joy House of Prayer in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998. St. John the Evangelist gave Emma messages in Ancient Classical Greek; one message from St. John, which she received at Mother of Joy House of Prayer, was written down by Emma in perfect Ancient Classical Greek (which Emma has never studied).

Rev. Peter W. Gleba offered an Enthronement Mass to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on October 28, 1995. Father Tadeusz Rudnick offered a beautiful Latin Mass on June 29, 1996. Father John Fetcho offered Holy Mass on October 19, 1996 and received the gift of a personal message from Our Mother of Joy through Emma. Other priests who have offered Holy Mass at the House of Prayer are Monsignor Albert J. M. Shamon, Rev. John Broderick, Rev. Victor E. Clemen and others.

Priests, nuns and lay people from all walks of life have visited the Prayer House since 1995 and more are beginning to arrive from different parts of the country. Deacon John Murray blest the outside grounds in 1995; Father William Esposito, pastor of St. Bernadette's, Constantia, New York and St. Mary's in Cleveland, New York, blest all the rooms in the Prayer House and Rev, Peter W. Gleba, Pastor of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, blest the grotto which is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bishop James Moynihan and his assistant Rev. Joseph Zareski, visited Mother of Joy House of Prayer on Tuesday, June 3, 1997 and the bishop imparted his blessing on the Prayer House and members of Syracuse La Pieta Prayer Group, whose foundress of La Pieta International Prayer Group is visionary, mystic Emma de Guzman. On August 5, 1997 the North Shore Knights of Columbus, under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Sakonyi of Constantia, donated a beautiful chain-saw sculpture memorial to the unborn which was created by John Dempsey of Rochester, New York. Rev, Peter W. Gleba blest and dedicated the statue on August 17, 1997, following Holy Mass. A dedication song entitled God Gave Me You was composed especially for the event and sung by Maria Theresa Iannolo of Syracuse, N.Y.

Emma de Guzman and Sol Gaviola founded the La Pieta Prayer Group in Kingston, Ontario with the help of Lisa Eltanal in December of 1991. Pat and Bev were so deeply inspired by Emma and Sol s ministry that, with the help of the Toronto Prayer Group, they organized the third La Pieta Prayer Group in September of 1994, which is based in Syracuse (Liverpool), New York. Other La Pieta Prayer Groups include: Kingston, Toronto, Ottawa, Cardinal, Calgary, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California. Prayer groups continue to emerge in other countries, including the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, France, etc.

On December 21, 1996, while on a mission to the Philippines, Emma and Sol, along with the Toronto and New Jersey Prayer Groups, met Cardinal Jaime Sin (with the help of Fr. Victor Emmanuel Clemen) and received the Cardinal s blessing and encouragement. In December of 1997 Emma and members of various La Pieta Prayer Groups (including Canada, Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.), visited the Philippines on a mission of love and prayer. Emma s prayer groups brought food, clothes and religious items to those in need and visited different cities and Emma prayed over thousands of people. The group was especially honored to meet with Cardinal Jaime Sin for almost and hour.

Emma is endorsed by at least two bishops, including Bishop Francisco Garmendai of South Bronx, New York, and Bishop Danylak of Canada, and many priests and seminarians have visited her home and witnessed miracles while in her presence (including the appearance of miraculous hosts from the angel of the Eucharist).

ALTHOUGH HER PUBLIC MINISTRY OF HEALING AND PRAYER IS RAPIDLY GROWING, EMMA REMAINS DEEPLY SPIRITUAL, HUMBLE, OBEDIENT, AND ALWAYS THANKS JESUS AND MARY FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS SHE HAS RECEIVED FROM GOD. EMMA CONTINUES TO BE A HARD-WORKING SERVANT OF JESUS AND MARY AND A TRUE BEACON OF LIGHT IN A WORLD OF SPIRITUAL DARKNESS.

Emma s multiple supernatural gifts, which have been manifested to thousands of people, include healing, bilocation, levitation, reading of hearts and souls, communion without deglutition (which is the process of using the throat muscles to swallow); and the appearance of bleeding hosts on her tongue--one after another. She also receives pure white hosts miraculously. Emma has also been given the gift of prophecy and the odor of sanctity. (To date she has received five beautiful perfumed fragrances.) People have witnessed roses emerge from the center of her chest and rose petals and roses fall around her. On many occasions witnesses have seen fragrant oil appear on her face, hands, feet and even ooze from her eyes. Statues of Jesus, Mary and other saints have oiled and bled while she was present. On multiple occasions Emma s body has been covered with multi-colored glitter. All of the above happenings have been witnessed by many, many people, including priests, nuns and lay people from various walks of life.

In April, 1997, one of the most beautiful miracles took place with Emma and was recorded by Sol Gaviola as follows:

    • On Saturday, April 26, 1997, we attended Mass at the Basilica Sacred Heart. We sat in the second pew from the front. When Emma received the host, she consumed the host without swallowing. We witnessed this at approximately 5:45 P.M.
    • After the Mass, another host, fresh and crisp, appeared on Emma s tongue and we captured it on video and photographs. (Witnessed by Beverly and Pat Galtieri, Sol Gaviola, Joe Robichaud, Mildred M., Edith O. and Percy D.)
    • The following day at Mother of Joy House of Prayer in Constantia, New York, at 11:50 A.M., Emma received the Apparition of the Light of Jesus, which went into Emma s hands for healing.

[Note by B.G. - During this miracle a very strong perfume fragrance came from Emma s hands and when others touched Emma, the fragrance remained on their hands all day. This phenomenon took place in the little chapel in the Prayer House.]

    • At 2:30 P.M. the miracle of the bleeding host appeared on Emma s tongue, which was witnessed by those present inside the Prayer House. After a minute or two, Emma consumed the host and opened her mouth again to show us if the host had been consumed and I said, Yes, because it is gone. A minute later another bleeding host appeared on Emma s tongue, and this time she cried so hard because she didn t understand why it was happening, but all she felt at that time was love.

Emma s presence at Mother of Joy House of Prayer has brought many people closer to Jesus and Mary; she continues to share her multiple gifts with everyone. Since Emma has been praying with people at the Prayer House, there have been both spiritual and physical healings attributed to her intercessory prayers. She brings peace and joy wherever she goes. During the Second International Reunion of the La Pieta Prayer Group on Sunday, July 26, 1998 on the feast of St. Anne, Mother of Joy House of Prayer was dedicated to Emma and a special song entitled, Emma, A Beacon of Light: , was written for her and sung by the Syracuse La Pieta Prayer Group.

Since 1995, volunteers have donated their time and services in remodeling the House of Prayer and some have received spiritual and/or physical healings. People of all faiths come to pray at the Prayer House because the Blessed Mother is the Mother of all mankind. A song in Our Blessed Mother s honor entitled Mother of Joy was composed especially for her in thankfulness for her presence as our Mother Of Joy at the House of Prayer. There is also a Chaplet in honor of Our Mother of Joy which was composed by Tim Boronski, a parishioner of Sacred Heart in Syracuse. Tim is currently a seminarian and had previously served at the Masses at the Prayer House. Christopher Gallipeau, also a member of Syracuse La Pieta Prayer Group, entered the seminary of St. John Neumann in Yonkers, N.Y. in 1999. Stephanie Eadie, a member of Syracuse La Pieta Prayer Group entered the Convent of the Immaculate Heart of Mary right after Christmas 1999..

Mother of Joy House of Prayer is truly a holy place; it is a refuge where one can pray from the heart to Our Blessed Lord and His beautiful Mother of Joy as the outside Stations are followed. One can meditate in the little chapel where the Miracle of the Bleeding Hosts occurred and where Our Blessed Mother and St. John appeared.

Syracuse La Pieta Prayer Group espouses loyalty to the Holy Father, a very traditional prayer life (including the utmost reverence when receiving holy Communion on the tongue while kneeling), and the women usually wear a white veil for Holy Mass. Our Blessed Mother told Emma that her presence would always be there at Mother of Joy House of Prayer. Through Emma de Guzman, many graces and blessings continue to be given by Jesus and Mary and all are invited to share in God s miracle of love and mercy.

The Most Holy Eucharistic Miracle of Santarém, Portugal

In the village of Santarém Portugal, just a half hour drive from Fátima, there occurred the Church's second most famous Eucharistic Miracle after Lanciano.

The miracle occurred on February 16th in the year 1247 when a woman married to a man who frequently committed adultery in desperation had turned to a Jewish Sorceress to seek a solution to her problem.

The sorceress promised her a magical potion but demanded a Consecrated Host as payment. The woman did as she was instructed, and faked an illness in order to receive Holy Communion on a weekday since at that time Mass was only celebrated on Sunday. She went to the Parish Church of Saint Stephen, received communion and then as she was leaving the Church, removed the Host from her mouth and tied it in a knot in the veil covering her head. It was then that the Miracle occurred.

The Host suddenly began to bleed profusely. The blood flowed so heavily that it the people in the streets inquired about her sickness. Frightened, she ran home and placed the Host still wrapped in the veil in a wooden trunk where she kept her clean linens. Her husband discovered the secret when a miracle occurred that night: From the chest came a brilliant light that illuminated the entire house. The Host was freed from the Knot and elevated by angels who sang Divine Praises. The parish priest was called, and the pulsating Host was taken back in procession to the Church of Saint Stephen where the Clergy in order to stop the bleeding decided to seal it in a ball of melted bees wax.

Nineteen years passed and in 1266 when a canonical investigation was held, it was discovered that a second miracle had occurred. The Host had freed itself from the wax ball and was now in a little crystal ampoule.

Kings, Queens and Saints venerated the Relic of the Miraculous-bleeding Host with great splendor over the centuries and the object of national adoration. No fewer than half a dozen Popes granted indulgences to the Cult and Saint Francis Xavier came on pilgrimage before becoming the great apostle of India.

Miraculous phenomena occurred throughout the centuries involving the same Miraculous Host. Images were seen and new emissions of blood were common. All of this stopped however after the North American pilgrimages in the late 1950's began visiting the Shrine very frequently and abusively handling the Host. During this time the crystal ampoule was broken through the sacrilegious practice of the touching of rosaries and other religious items to It to take away as relics. By the 1970's half the glass of the ampoule had been broken off and the silver stopper removed, taken away as relics. The Host subsequently corrupted due to exposure to the air and today only particles of blood and solidified flesh are found clinging to the
inside what remains of the glass ampoule.

The Relics were scientifically analyzed in 1997 for the 750th anniversary celebrations of the Miracle and proven to be genuine and of a supernatural origin. The relics of the Host and blood soaked wax were then sealed and placed in a bulletproof case atop the Eucharistic Throne above the main altar.

In 1997 the Church of Saint Stephen of the Holy Miracle was recognized as the Shrine of the Most Holy miracle.

    Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, Italy
In 1263, Peter of Prague, a German priest on pilgrimage to Rome, was celebrating Mass in Bolsena, Italy. He had come to doubt the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. During the consecration, blood suddenly dripped from the Sacred Host and covered his hands as well as the altar. Startled, Father Peter interrupted the Mass and left for nearby Orvieto, where Pope Urban IV was then residing. Having absolved the priest of his past sin, the Holy Father ordered the local bishop to bring him the miraculous Host and the bloodstained altar cloth for examination. Impressed by this miraculous event, the Pope had the Host and altar cloth placed in the Cathedral of Orvieto, where they remain perfectly preserved to this day (Michael Freze, S.F.O. Voices, Visions, and Apparitions).

    Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano
In the year 700 at the monastery of St. Longinus in Luciano, Italy, a priest from the Order of St. Basil was celebrating Mass. Having doubted the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the priest saw, during the consecration, the bread miraculously transformed into a circle of flesh and the wine appear as bright as fresh blood. Eventually, the liquefied blood turned into five pellets of various sizes and shapes. When the local archbishop later weighed the pellets, it was discovered that one nugget weighed the same as all five together, two as much as any three, and the smallest as much as the largest. In February of 1574, another test was done on the miraculous blood pellets. Again, any one of the pellets weighed alone equaled the weight of all five pellets together. In 1970, further tests were made on the body and blood of Jesus. Analysis has proved that the bread and wine contain characteristics of real human flesh and blood. Both belonged to the same blood type, AB. Eventually, the Franciscans rebuilt the church that houses the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano. It is now called the Church of St. Francis (Michael Freze, S.F.O. Voices, Visions, and Apparitions).

    Eucharistic Miracle of Blaine, France
In 1153, at Blaine, France, it is claimed that a young girl named Agnes refused to believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. During one Mass of the feast of the Holy Spirit celebrated by Archbishop Anculphe de Pierrefonds of Soissons, Agnes and the congregation saw the Host change into an image of the Child Jesus. This occurred during the elevation. Agnes immediately converted and founded a monastery where the miraculous Host was kept for centuries (Michael Freze, S.F.O. Voices, Visions, and Apparitions).

    Eucharistic Miracle in Ferrara, Italy
It is claimed that on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1171, during a Mass celebrated by Padre Pietro de Verona in Ferrara, Italy, blood spurted out of the Host when it was broken in two during the sacred consecration. The entire congregation witnessed this; they also saw the Host visibly turn to a substance that looked like fresh human flesh (Michael Freze, S.F.O. Voices, Visions, and Apparitions).

The Eucharistic Miracle of Naju (The Sacred Heart of the Divine Victim)

It looked like a heart when we first examined the photos taken September 22, 1995 during the Mass celebrated  in a valley among  the Naju hills in Korea. Some time  in November, 1995, I showed the photos taken to a pediatrician,  Dr. Helen Owen. After attentive examination, she said the heart in the photo was  the size and had the exact configurations of the heart of an infant.

    A tiny heart
Sebastian, the layman present during the celebration with his camera, calculated the thickness of the host turned heart  in the mouth of Julia  against a twig he had in hand. The heart  was about 5 mm. thick. The pediatrician further noted the  various particulars, the lines of the veins in the heart and other features. It was a perfect human heart, not like a valentine, but a real human heart, the size of the heart of a child.

It was  Friday, September 22, 1995, when two priests, Fr. Joseph  Finn and Fr. Aloysius Chang and I had concelebrated the Eucharist in an out-door celebration amidst  the Korean mountains at 5 p.m. There were sixteen Korean Catholic faithful present with Julia Kim, the Korean visionary, and ourselves, participating in this Mass. We had prepared the large white host, and the number of small white hosts together with the wine for the Eucharist. The three of us had concelebrated Mass a week before, Friday, September 15 an hour later, at 6 p.m.   And we had to finish the celebration by car light; it was pitch dark.

After that first Mass Julia came up to me with a question. She had seen a rainbow in the night sky at the time of the consecration, and asked me what could be its significance. The thought that occurred to me and that I shared with Julia through our translator, was that first biblical rainbow after the great flood. God used it as a memorial to the first covenant he established between Himself and renewed mankind. We had just celebrated the memorial of the final covenant in the Divine Liturgy or Eucharist when Julia saw her rainbow.

For me it was the culmination of the day. I had been looking forward to this celebration with expectation, not in view of witnessing a miracle, but just to offer my daily Mass. The only communications we had with Julia during the week were through her Korean translator, Raphael; our life in Naju was lived from moment to moment .We never knew what each day would bring. We could plan nothing.

Friday, September 22, 1995 turned out to be a day of celebration. Fr. Finn and I were treated to a festive fish dinner at a sea-side restaurant near the Pacific. Julia and the group of the little community in Naju went all out to celebrate our visit, together with Korean sashimi and squirming fresh squid. After lunch we boarded our vans and continued to travel,  with me wondering when we would celebrate  Mass. It was after 4 p.m. when we drove into the compound of the valley. It was only when we  finally entered the valley that I knew we were to celebrate Holy Mass.

    A heavenly love feast
None of us even dreamed of this other celebration that the Lord and His Mother were preparing, a heavenly love feast at the Eucharistic banquet of the Lord at one of the most awesome miracles granted by Our Lord in the twenty centuries of the history of the Church; to witness the awesome transformation of the consecrated host and wine into the very Body, nay the very Heart, and the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, through the intercession of His Mother.

The rest of us received the Eucharistic Body and Blood of Christ, but in Julia's mouth the Eucharistic species of the Host, the wafer, and the species of the wine in the chalice, changed to the species of flesh and blood. The rest of us savoured the taste of  wafer and wine as we received Holy Communion. We knew with divine faith that these were the very Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. We were joined to the living and glorified Christ, renewing His mystical and real oblation, offering Himself as the Divine Victim and His Mystical Body to the Father. As Julia experienced the commingling of blood and flesh, the flesh expanding and moving in her mouth and the strong odour of blood, Fr. Finn observed the white of the host disappearing and changing into the dark red of living flesh.

In Julia's mouth the species of unleavened bread changed to the species of flesh and the species of wine changed into the species of blood. In the twilight of  5.30 p.m. that momentous Friday the rest of us observed the moving flesh on her tongue and the blood brimming under her tongue and filling the creases of her lips. It was only later, as we examined the photos, that we began to apprehend the full magnitude of the miracle. The host had changed into a living and vibrant heart.

For the first time, human  eyes saw the living Heart of Our Lord and Saviour, the Heart that had so loved the world that It offered Itself  in holocaust that we might live and not be lost. All those present at this memorable evening shared the same sentiments. We were one in mind and heart. It was two months later, in November, that I finally received and read the text of the message of Jesus to Julia during her communion, in the French translation of  Fr. Spies.  As I read this message from our Lord during the time of communion, I became aware that the words of  Jesus confirmed our conjecture. "My  Mother is now showing and revealing My heart to a bishop...". What we had viewed that September evening was the very heart of Jesus.

    Varied reactions
The reactions of others to this phenomenon, with whom I shared the pictures and my account of our experience - well, that was another thing. They covered a vast gamut from incredulity and  disbelief,  cynicism and indifference to silence, wonderment and awe before this mystery of faith; a profession of faith in the Eucharist, in the Catholic Church, in the sacrament of the priesthood, of conversion and Christian faith.

Remarks included, "How gross!" and questions, "How was a photographer so conveniently present?"  Accusation, " Julia slipped a heart she had hidden on her person into her mouth!" Denial, "This is private revelation; I don't have to believe it!"  And from still others, there was a total lack of responsiveness. Such were some of the negative comments and reactions.

However, I was invited to share our experiences the following weeks in the home of a Seoul business man before a group of 15 Koreans, largely Catholics. Our hostess, a Buddhist, who had some exposure to Christian and Catholic teachings, believed immediately and forthwith decided to take Catholic instruction and to be baptized in the Catholic Church. Her Korean Methodist friend believed immediately and resolved all the questions she still entertained about the Catholic Eucharist and the celibate Catholic clergy.

    Bread of Life
On the other hand, others:  priests, theologians, bishops and Catholic laity to whom I showed the photos, bogged down by their theologies, remained indifferent or were even  horrified before this new evidence of their Catholic or Christian faith.
"This is My Body; this is My Blood", said Christ as He distributed the first Eucharist to His apostles, fulfilling the promise He had given after the multiplication of fishes and loaves on the north shore of  Lake  Genesareth.  Jesus is the Bread of Life; He who comes to me will never be hungry, he who has faith in Me will never thirst." (Jn.6, 15)  And five times Jesus repeated and
underlined and stressed that His flesh is real food, and His blood is real drink for eternal life, and that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood, has life everlasting in Him, and He will raise us up on the last day.

The theology and the doctrine of the Catholic and the Orthodox Churches have been constant to the present day. Bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. This promise of Christ became a stumbling block for the Jews and scandal to the gentiles.  It has remained so to liberal Catholics, theologians, laity and even priests and a scandal to the Protestants, even to the present day.

Yet Jesus' words are clear and He never retracted them.  As the Pharisees and Sadducees, and even His disciples left Jesus - only His twelve apostles remained -  the Lord, heavy-hearted, turned to His apostles with the question, "Will you also leave me?"

And from those banks of the sea of Tiberias, He scanned  the ages even to this our present age, and watched as those who had come to know Him through His Church, turned  away in disbelief and incredulity. His lament and His accusation of the neo-modernist intellectuals in the Church continues. "Will you also leave me?"

Jesus poured out His heart to Julia: "Many ecclesiastics want to make me known through sophisticated arguments and complex reasonings,  forgetting the Eucharist, which is my very substance, and the sublime simplicity of the Gospels, which I proclaim. This is like throwing mud at simple people." (Cf. Message to Julia Kim, September 22, 1995)

Eucharistic Miracles in the Catholic Church
Observers of the pictures and of the story of the miracle have raised two specious theological counter-arguments.  The first invokes the authority of the Council of Trent. The Eucharist contains the glorified and immutable body of Christ. How can the Eucharist bleed or change into living bleeding flesh, still less, change into a living heart?  Secondly, what purpose can such a miracle serve?

The history of the Church records more than one hundred and sixty approved Eucharistic miracles. I invoke  two. The miracles of Lanciano and Bolsena in Italy.

At the beginning of the eighth century a Basilian monk of Lanciano (near Chieti in Italy) was tormented by doubts after pronouncing the words of consecration during Mass. Before his eyes the Sacred Host visibly changed into flesh, except in the centre where the sacramental species remained intact. The consecrated wine changed into a bright red blood, that coagulated into five small clots. This miraculous host and blood have been preserved to the present day. The popes of that period confirmed the authenticity of the miracle. And in our own days the Holy See commissioned a group of scientists for laboratory research in  1970. The Osservatore Romano of April 3, 1971 reported their findings, which confirmed that the blood is real blood and the flesh is real flesh composed of cardiac muscle tissue.  The flesh is  heart tissue. Both the host and the blood belong to the same person. This miracle continues now for 1200 years. (For a more complete  report cf. the May 1972 issue of IMMACULATA, Kenosha, Wisc.). Popes  Leo X, Clement X, Leo XIII, and others have confirmed the authenticity and the veneration or cult given to this Miraculous Eucharist.

The second miracle is the story of an unknown monk, Peter of Prague. It was the time of the Eucharistic controversies of the thirteenth century. The priest monk Peter was celebrating Mass at the main altar in the church of Saint Christina in Bolsena some time in 1263. The story goes that he was assailed by doubts in the truth of the Eucharist. He continued to celebrate.  He pronounced the words of consecration over the host and elevated the host, the unleavened bread turned into flesh and began to bleed profusely. News reached Rome quickly and the pontiff, Pope Urban IV , who was in Orvieto at the time, set out for Bolsena. At the request of the pope the local bishop went to bring him the miraculous host. The Pope was so eager to observe and to venerate the miracle that he hastened  to meet the returning processions. They met at the Bridge of the Sun at the entrance to Orvieto. The Pope fell to his knees in adoration of the Eucharistic Lord, whose bleeding Eucharistic Body lay on the corporal. The corporal has been preserved in the Orvieto cathedral to this present day. The following year,  August 1264, the Pope instituted the feast of Corpus Christi in honour of the Blessed Sacrament and he commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to write the office of the feast. St. Thomas' are the hymns O Salutaris Hostia and Tantum Ergo.

The Church has acknowledged the authenticity of these Eucharistic Miracles and many others.  It has acknowledged similar miracles, the bleeding of the Eucharist, in Venezuela and elsewhere in this decade.  There were nine significant Eucharistic miracles at Naju itself that preceded the miracle I am now presenting. The miracles began with the appearances of images of the Eucharist or the chalice in pictures taken of the weeping statue of Our Lady in Naju. Later, the Host received in communion by Julia changed in bleeding flesh, as testified by the priests and faithful present at communion. The papal pro-nuncio to Korea, Mons. Giovanni Bulaitis, was present when an invisible hand (of St. Michael the Archangel, as Julia later explained) placed the large host in her mouth.

Although the diocesan commission of Kwangju has not yet spoken on the twelve Eucharistic miracles that have taken place to date in association with Julia Kim, two bishops, Archbishop Giovanni Bulaitis, the papal pro-nuncio to Korea and I, have authenticated our own experiences. Archbishop Bulaitis, Apostolic pro-nuncio to Korea has been following the events of Naju and has presented his findings to Pope John Paul II.  And to the  astonishment and dismay of skeptics, the Holy Father himself was privy to the same miracle of the Eucharistic host becoming a living heart during the celebration of the Eucharist in his papal chapel in the Vatican, when Julia Kim received communion from his hands. Although the Pope has not spoken of this  himself , a recent publication in English of the messages and miracles of Naju includes the report on the miracle and the texts of the messages of the Blessed Virgin.

Another difficulty I encountered with the theologians was, "what purpose could such a phenomenon serve?"  We have to ask the Author of this phenomenon and miraculous event in the first place, not Julia or me.  Who are we to dictate to the Author of these Miracles, the Eucharistic Lord Himself,  what He is to do with the mystery of the Eucharistic miracles?  In His infinite compassion for us and for the countless numbers who had and continue to have problems with the Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist, Jesus Himself gives us His heavenly confirmation.  The Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Christ, present under the species of bread and wine.

    The Truth Confirmed
In Naju, He gave us the miracles of the weeping and bleeding statue of His Blessed Mother beginning on June 30, 1985.  And now He gives us these Eucharistic miracles to confirm the Catholic faith in the Eucharist and the authenticity of the heavenly messages communicated to us through Julia Kim. Heaven is serious in its warnings and calls us to repentance and to return to the fount of Divine Mercy before it is too late.

These miracles, and especially the Eucharistic Miracles, are the last appeal of Divine Mercy.  Jesus wants to forgive and to save us, even at this eleventh hour of  the loss of faith and growing apostasy, from the horrendous punishments that hang over  the world and this sinful generation, especially  of those  who still claim the name of Catholic and Christian. In His message of September 22, 1995, Jesus laments over His priests; "If my priests who celebrate Mass daily, would truly believe in and seek to experience this Presence with their whole heart and would live the sublime and marvellous Divine Reality ...innumerable souls would be purified and would live in My merciful heart with a grace that is beyond all expectation."

He laments about our theological head trips and the lack of a living love response. "There are many priests...who claim to know that I breathe and live in the Eucharist, that I am present body and blood, soul and divinity, but they do not really know me well."  He is speaking of those who were shown " my living presence several times (the earlier Eucharistic miracles in Naju) through my little soul (Julia)". Yet notwithstanding this, He continues, " those of my children who follow me are few." He laments about our theological sophistries: "Many ecclesiastics want to make me known through sophisticated argument and complex reasons, forgetting the Eucharist which is my substance, and the sublime simplicity of the Gospels that I proclaim. This is like throwing mud at simple people".   And Jesus concludes:"Make haste to begin to live a life of devotion through prayer, sacrifices, penance so that you may attain the final victory and to make acts of reparation for the most abominable sins of blasphemy that have been committed."

"Have mercy on me and I will have mercy on you."
A young American woman who was on the same Marian cruise through the Caribbean  in March, 1996 as I, approached me the last day of the cruise. She told me the Lord had given me this message to her in locutions. Why would the Lord reprimand me with such hard words? I had given witness to Him earlier that week with my account of the miracle of Naju; and now what is He telling me? As I reflected again on the message, the words of Jesus resounded in my ears: "Apostasy and infidelity are bringing this world to the brink of ruin; too many of my representatives continue to sleep. In truth, my representatives even allow themselves to be seduced by false prophets.  The present disorders continuously torment me; they rend my heart, they become the lashes that endlessly tear at the Sacred and Immaculate heart of My Mother."

"Have mercy on me and I shall have mercy on You."  These words received a strange confirmation on Friday June 30, 1996.  I had called Lubbock, Texas and was speaking with Patricia Devlin's daughter, Eileen. When she recognized me, she continued. "Bishop, do you remember the message you received during the cruise: "Have mercy on Me and I shall have mercy on you"?  How could I forget these words?  Eileen continued. " Jesus, the Divine Infant of Prague had uttered these same words to a priest who had found the mutilated body of the statue after the sack of the Carmelite convent in Prague. And as he pulled the statue out of the heap he heard the words, "Have mercy on Me, and I shall have mercy on you."

In her message to Julia during  the papal Mass, the Blessed Mother recapitulates: "The visible change of the Eucharist today was to show that Jesus came to you through the Sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist, which is a repetition of the Sacrifice completed on Golgotha to wash away the sins of the world with His precious Blood...Let all know the Sacred Real Presence of the Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.. ". (Message of October 31, 1995).

    Divine Faith
The unusual events around Julia, her messages and the phenomena are private revelations, that must be discerned by the Church. The weeping and bleeding in tears of the statue of the Virgin, though of the order of private revelation, are first and foremost observable phenomena, that can be perceived by our senses and by scientific examination as well.  The Eucharistic phenomena are also observable facts, witnessed and testified by many, including  bishops and priests. The Eucharist which changed into the flesh of the human heart and blood is an observable phenomenon, but it is also a reality to be accepted by divine faith. We believe with divine faith that every host and every drop of wine that has been validly consecrated become  the Body and Blood of Our Lord. The consecrated species are signs of the substantial presence of the living Christ.

A second miracle took place in Naju; the transubstantiated species of bread and wine were further transformed into the species of blood and flesh or heart, that are also the signs of the Eucharistic substantial presence of Christ. All these are supernatural events that could be actualized only by the power of God, present in the mystery of the Eucharist.

There is one last lesson to be learned from this Eucharistic miracle of Naju. Jesus has chosen to transform the host, a sign of the Divine Bread of life, into the sign of His love, His heart. If He appeared to Saint Gertrude in the middle ages, to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1600's, to reveal to them the mystery of His love, Jesus has chosen, in these our times, to reveal to us the living reality of that Heart that so loved us;  and not only of His own heart, but the infinite and eternal dynamic and living love of the Blessed Trinity that gives Itself to us in the Incarnation of Jesus, the living love of Jesus Himself, the Incarnate Word of God who is all love, all heart, in His Eucharist, in His Eucharistic Heart.  Too often even those who believe in the Eucharist, continue to think of it as merely  a sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus. We find it difficult to connect this sacramental presence with the real and mystical presence of the Whole Jesus, of the Incarnate Word of God, who is Love and Who has chosen this means to become present to us, not only in sign but in His awesome divine reality. He wants to abide in us and us in Him as He abides in the Father and the Father in Him in His love, through His Eucharistic Heart.  Jesus is the very Heart of the Trinity.

A contemporary mystic, and too often maligned, Maria Valtorta, describes this mystery of Love. She places in the lips of John the beloved disciple, this ecstatic vision of the mystery of Christ, the Incarnate Son of God.  "You are in the bosom of the Fire that is the eternal Love of the Most Holy Trinity, its Nature, its Essence, its Real Essence....  You are the Second Person of the ineffable mystery, which is God and which I penetrated because God has drawn me to Himself...You, God the Son, You are like the Father, You, God like the Holy Spirit, You, centre of the Trinity...because if You were not the love of the Father and the love for the Father, then the Love, the Divine Love would be missing, and the Divinity would  no longer be Triune and it would lack the most becoming attribute of God, His love..." (Maria Valtorta, The Poem of the Man-God, vol. 2, p. 95).  And it is this love that gives itself to those  that wish to receive it in the mystery of the Eucharistic Heart

    Report #3
    The "gods" In Our Midst
    by Ed Tarkowski
    November 12, 1996

When a person enters the Catholic faith through Baptism and has reached the age of reason, he is allowed to receive Communion, the "host" that is supposedly changed (transubstantiated) into the actual Body and Blood of Christ. I was Catholic for 30 years, and after meeting the Lord Jesus and comparing the Catholic doctrines with Scripture, I could no longer stay a Catholic. Then for a number of years, I left my concerns about Catholicism behind. But lately, new concerns about my old faith have arisen. I recently came across a web page on the Internet that testifies to an increase in the manifestations of what are called "Eucharistic Miracles."

The Eucharistic Miracle Of Lanciano (Circa.700 AD)(1)

    Lanciano: Vial Of "Christ's" Blood

This "miracle" happened through a monk who was saying Mass in the city of Lanciano around the year 700. The story goes on,

"One morning, as [the monk] was celebrating Mass [in Lanciano], after he had already said the most holy words of consecration, . . . he saw the bread changed into flesh and the wine into blood. . . . [He] turned his joyful yet tearful face to those around him and cried out: 'O fortunate friends to whom the Blessed Lord has deigned to reveal himself in this Most Holy Sacrament and to make himself visible before your eyes and to dispel my own unbelief. Come, brothers, and gaze at our God drawn near us. Behold the Flesh and Blood of our most beloved Christ'.

". . . . some cried out with devout voice for divine mercy; some beat their breasts and confessed their guilt and sins; others with subdued voices and sighs admitted their unworthiness to gaze upon such a precious treasure; and others still, in a state of rapture and reverent silence admired, marveled, praised, and thanked the all-good God who deigned to place before our mortal senses His immortal and incomprehensible Majesty. "

    Lanciano: The Flesh Of "Christ"

In 1991, the flesh and blood from this "miracle" was tested scientifically and found to be from a human heart. The results of these tests can be read and seen at the above URL. Someone in the Catholic Church had to approve this scientific investigation. Why? It is ludicrous to believe that Jesus, in His glorified body at the right hand of God, suddenly manifested a piece of His heart, now unglorified, by changing the bread to His flesh. The blood was also tested and was found to be real blood.

The Eucharistic Miracle At Betania (1991)(2)

A more recent case is the "Eucharistic Miracle At Betania":

"The day was December 8, 1991. Fr. Otty Ossa Aristizabal, pastor assigned to the Betania grotto, was celebrating mass in the outdoor church. As he consecrated the Eucharistic Host, spots of blood appeared on it. . . . [It] is known that the Eucharist was tested at one of the finest hospitals in Venezuela, and the blood was shown to be human blood.

"Shortly after the evaluation, the Miraculous Host was moved to a small chapel at the Diocesan Curate in Los Teques, where pilgrims flock today to venerate the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist."

    The Bleeding Host Of Betania

A "Prayer to Jesus in the Holy Sacrament (to be said before the Miraculous Host)" (parentheses in original) was also listed on this page:

"O Jesus! Present in this Divine and Holy Host, that through a special design of Your mercy, You have desired, in these times of such disbelief in which we now live, to manifest the real and true presence of Your Body and Your Blood in the Eucharist, allowing Your divine Blood to flow forth from the Eucharistic Bread, in order to strengthen our Faith. . . . "

    Eucharistic Miracles In Korea (1995)(3)

In the next and final example of "Eucharistic Miracles," here is the testimony of Julia Kim, the woman who experienced the "miracle." I would add a CAUTION here, as this is pretty descriptive, and the picture following these testimonies could be very upsetting:

"Bishop Roman Danylak of Toronto, Ontario ([Ukrainian Rite,] Canada) celebrated Mass on the mountain together with Fr. At the same time I smelled a strong odour of blood, and the Sacred Host began moving. One of the faithful saw this and reported it to Bishop Danylak. The bishop observed this phenomenon together with the others present. A while later Bishop Danylak instructed me to swallow the Host. I swallowed the Host with much difficulty, because it had changed into a piece of flesh, and had become larger. We were crying and entered into prayerful meditation; a light came down from heaven and the voice of Jesus, at once warm and loving, and full of dignity and majesty, made itself heard, even though I could not see Him."

A Home Page entitled, "Inexplicable Eucharistic Phenomena," gives a partial history of this type of "miracle" down through the ages to the present time. Included is the event just described, and it adds more facts to what is written above:

"Naju, South Korea was the location of an unusual Eucharistic event on September 22,1995. Julia Kim, a Korean housewife, mystic and Marian visionary was in the process of receiving Holy Communion at an outdoor Mass celebrated in the Korean hills near Naju when the Consecrated Host began to bleed in her mouth. The Host itself also changed character transforming into a disc of what appeared to be pulsating, living flesh. . . . Witnesses stated that they detected the strong odor of blood when this transformation took place. Upon further inspection of the photographs and video that were taken of the event, it appeared that the flesh was a living, beating heart. The blood itself filled her mouth and filled the creases of her lips" (See picture below)

This is not the only time Kim has experienced the "miracle," and as is common, other phenomena manifested as well:
"On Nov 2, 1994 at a side chapel in St. Anthony's Church, mass celebrated by Fr Martin Lucia (Perpetual Adoration promoter) Julia Kim received communion and she signaled to Father to look into her mouth, where the Body and Blood of Christ on Julia's tongue had turned into visible flesh and blood. The event was entirely captured on photos and video tape by her husband, Julio Kim. The replica statue of Our Lady of Naju, Korea Which had been presented to the St. Michael Center for the Blessed Virgin Mary in Hawaii was witnessed to be smiling. The smell of roses was witnessed several times during the conference and this mass. This eucharistic 'miracle' in Honolulu is the 6th eucharistic miracle experienced by Julia Kim. Another, the 7th, has since occurred in Naju, Korea when the Apostolic Nuncio was present visiting Julia Kim."

    Hayford Condones Catholic Communion

These are only some of many such "miracles," which are said to be on the increase, but my concern grew when I read the following statement by Jack Hayford in "The Seven Promises Of A Promise Keeper." Ignorant of these "miracles" or not, he was condoning the Catholic Eucharist and Mass in this top-selling book:

"Redeeming worship centers on the Lord's Table. Whether your tradition celebrates it as Communion, Eucharist, the Mass, or the Lord's Supper, we are all called to this centerpiece of Christian worship" (p. 19).

That sounds spiritual and holy and good, but the "centerpiece of Christian worship" in the Catholic Church is changing - without warning, suddenly, during gatherings of worship. Now having looked at the picture above, think about this: would you want the bread to turn into real, human flesh and the wine to real, human blood after you'd taken it into your mouth? Would you want to swallow it in obedience to the priest, after he took time to examine it and get pictures of it? Thinking about the possibility of this "miracle" becoming more commonplace in the Catholic tradition, would you be inclined to join the Pope's global Communion celebration for the year 2000? Is even the thought of these things gross to you? It is to me. Is it blasphemous to you? It is to me. Does it concern you? It does me. And yet Jack Hayford, a MAJOR player in many areas of the current "revival," doesn't differentiate between the Catholic Transubstantiation and the Christian Remembrance. Surely Hayford doesn't believe that these repulsive occurrences are what Jesus meant when He said,

John 6 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh which I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. . . .
60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?
61 When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

At the Last Supper, Jesus and the disciples ate bread and drank wine, not real flesh and real blood, and He told us to partake of this meal IN REMEMBRANCE of Him.

As I said, the above testimonies concern me because of Hayford's statement and because all denominations are being reconciled to Rome. The current "move" toward unity and cooperative evangelism with Rome is scheduled to culminate in an ecumenical global Communion service planned by Pope John Paul II for the year 2000. Since these "Eucharistic Miracles" have been reported as increasing, what can we expect four years from now at such a Rome-lead, worldwide celebration?

This is a serious situation because these "miracles" are exhibitions of blasphemy at its highest level. Examining and testing "Jesus'" heart under a literal microscope is bad enough, but these "Eucharistic Miracles" could very well escalate to the point of major "miracles" on a global level, which would then confirm their source, and I don't mean our Lord Jesus Christ. In Revelation 13 we read of the antichrist and his blasphemies:

1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Revelation 13 also speaks of the false prophet and his power to do signs and wonders:

12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

During our anti-apostasy conference last November, Tim Kauffman questioned whether the Catholic host might be the image that is given life. It is something to consider and "file" for the few short years ahead.

The blasphemies are coming in other forms as well. I had just told our prayer group to watch for the rise of "Mary" in this move toward unity, and then while I was writing the present article, I received the following e-mail. It shows that the blasphemies are starting, AND EVOLVING, and coming forth, and "Mary" is tied to the majority of them:

"The latest in a stream of books supporting ecumenical relations between Catholics and non-Catholics is 'Ecumenical Jihad: Ecumenism and the Culture War' by Peter Kreeft (Ignatius Press, 1996). Kreeft, a convert to Catholicism from Dutch Reformed Calvinism, has written a number of articles calling on Catholics and non-Catholics to join hands to build a just and moral society. He was the author of an article in the 1992 issue of the Bookstore Journal, official publication of Christian Booksellers Association, which aimed to build bridges to the 'Catholic market.' The cover of the magazine was dominated by a large string of rosary beads. In an article in the charismatic Catholic magazine, New Covenant, November 1993, Kreeft said that Mary links us to Christ in four ways: she prays for us, was the channel for our salvation as 'co-redemptrix,' was immaculately conceived and sinless, and BY HER BLOOD! He states: 'But there is also a fourth way Mary links us to Christ: literally by her blood ... Christ's literal blood, which redeemed us, was our blood because it was Mary's blood . . . He shed our own blood, our human race's blood, to redeem us . . . through the mediation of Mary.'"

On the second URL listed below for Betania, these "miracles" are being promoted as the fulfillment of Catholic prophecy made by Saint John Bosco in 1862:

"There will be chaos in the Church. Tranquility will not return until the Pope succeeds in anchoring the boat of Peter between the twin pillars of Eucharistic devotion and devotion to Our Lady. This will come about one year before the end of the (20th) century" (Saint John Bosco, 1862).

"This prophetic statement by Saint John Bosco, the Italian priest and mystic who founded the Salesians, puts into context the other principal supernatural phenomena occuring in the late Twentieth century - Eucharistic miracles. Before detailing these events, it might be useful to provide a brief overview of the origins of Catholic belief in the Eucharist and outline just what the Catholic Church teaches about the act of consecration and the changes in the characteristics of the Host that occur as a result of this consecration. . . .

"These are only a few of the many reports of inexplicable Eucharistic phenomena presently occuring around the world that are being evaluated by local episcopal and medical authorities. This outbreak of Eucharistic phenomena, if substantiated, is unprecedented in Catholic Church history. The combination of the outpouring of Marian apparitions and this awesome display of Eucharistic love would appear to be setting the stage for the most remarkable period of faith conversion in modern history. It would appear as though Saint John Bosco's prophecy is about to be fulfilled within the next three years!! Let us pray that the world doesn't continue to battle the emergence of God's supernatural love into our daily lives - because that is a battle the world will surely lose!!"

Being called an "outbreak" of these "miracles," they are said to be increasing along with appearnaces of "Mary," who has also given Catholic mystics prophesies that are now porported to be coming true. All of this has deep implications for the increase in unity and global evangelization efforts being headed by Rome within the Christian arena. Crazy? Unbelievable? Not in this day and age. Like I said, the situation could turn into an even more serious one, not just because a few people are now manifesting "blood" and "flesh" in their mouths at Communion time, but because the global Church is heading for a worldwide participation in a meal that consists of eating another's actual flesh and blood, whether or not it remains in the form of bread and wine. The catholic Church vehemently teaches that the bread and wine ARE the LITERAL body and blood of Christ whether the elements remain in their their nature state or no. More and more, we are seeing the fulfillment of true, Biblically-based prophesy:

2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

Is the Golden Cup about to be passed at a universal level?

Pope John Paul II made his call for a global Communion service in a 72-page letter entitled "The Coming of the Third Millennium: Preparation for the Jubilee of the Year 2000." In Article 23 of the document, released on November 10, 1994, he writes,

"Since the publication of the very first document of my pontificate I have spoken explicitly of the Great Jubilee, suggesting that the time leading up to it be lived as 'a new Advent.' This theme has since reappeared many times, and was dwelt upon at length in the encyclical Dominum et Vivificantem. In fact, preparing for the year 2000 has become as it were a hermeneutical key of my pontificate."

On May 25, 1995, the Pope released another encyclical: Ut Unum Sint, i.e. "That They May Be One." Again, John Paul reaffirmed that he wants total unity as a means to reaching full communion by the year 2000:

"I myself intend to promote every suitable initiative aimed at making the witness of the entire Catholic community understood in its full purity and consistency, especially considering the engagement which awaits the Church at the threshold of the new Millennium. That will be an exceptional occasion, in view of which she asks the Lord to increase the unity of all Christians until they reach full communion. The present Encyclical Letter is meant as a contribution to this most noble goal. Essentially pastoral in character, it seeks to encourage the efforts of all who work for the cause of unity."

Later in the encyclical, the Pope wrote that the Catholic Church's "missionary and ecumenical endeavors" are

"to the world to announce and witness, to make present and spread the mystery of communion which is essential to her, and to gather all people and all things into Christ, so as to be for all an 'inseparable sacrament of unity.'"

What is he calling for by these words? Essentially, that ALL people become a corporate "living sacrament." Full communion, he says, is to be demonstrated in a visible unity of all churches under Rome which centers, and Hayford concurs, around the Eucharist. The Pope continued,

"From this basic but partial unity it is now necessary to advance towards the visible unity which is required and sufficient and which is manifested in a real and concrete way, so that the Churches may truly become a sign of that full communion in the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church which will be expressed in the common celebration of the Eucharist."

Lastly, the Pope stated that this is God's plan:

"The Catholic Church, both in her praxis [customary practice and conduct] and in her solemn documents, holds that the communion of the particular Churches with the Church of Rome, and of their Bishops with the Bishop of Rome, is - in God's plan - an essential requisite of full and visible communion. Indeed full communion, of which the Eucharist is the highest sacramental manifestation, needs to be visibly expressed in a ministry in which all the Bishops recognize that they are united in Christ and all the faithful find confirmation for their faith."

Shortly after the November encyclical was released, David Crumm of the Detroit Free Press reported that the Pope's plan "calls for many phases of preparation for the Jubilee." Crumm wrote,

"After years of slow dialogue with many Christian denominations, the pontiff wants to move rapidly to break down barriers between the churches. He wants temporary agreements to allow members to worship together in special jubilee programs. Beyond that, the pope hopes to move quickly toward full communion, in which members of the churches would share worship services."

The question is, with the "Eucharist [being] the highest sacramental manifestation" of the united churches, will we see more "Eucharistic Miracles" in unprecedented numbers? The physical manifestations are serious, but our concern goes far beyond them to the fact that the Catholic religion believes that partaking of the Catholic Communion renews and changes one, not only spiritually, but physically. In Pope John II's book, "Celebrate 2000" (1996), he wrote,

"Left us ourselves, we could never achieve the ends for which we have been created. Within us there is a promise which we find we are incapable of attaining. But the Son of God who came among us has given us His personal assurance: 'I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life' (Jn. 14:6). As St. Augustine so strikingly phrased it, Christ 'wishes to create a place in which it is possible for ALL people to find true life.' This 'place' is His Body and His Spirit, in the whole of human life, redeemed and forgiven, is renewed and made divine" (p. 24, emphasis mine)

The Pope is saying that "all people . . . . the whole of human life . . . . [can be] renewed and made divine." The next quote states the same thing:

". . .in the Eucharist we become partakers of the Body and Blood of God's only Son . . . [and] the partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ has NO LESS EFFECT than to change us into what we have received" (emphasis mine, Dave Hunt, A Woman Rides The Beast)

In his papal letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church in 1980, "On The Mystery And Worship Of The Eucharist," Pope John Paul II says that through the Eucharist, man is first transformed into a "new ma" through the Eucharist, which then results in a "new earth":

"In particular, it would be possible to link what has been said about the effects of the Eucharist on love for others with what we have just noted about commitments undertaken towards humanity and the Church in Eucharistic Communion, and then outline the picture of that "new earth"[34] that springs from the Eucharist through every "new self."[35] In this sacrament of bread and wine, of food and drink, everything that is human really undergoes a singular transformation and elevation. Eucharistic worship is not so much worship of the inaccessible transcendence as worship of the divine condescension, and it is also the merciful and redeeming transformation of the world in the human heart"(Excerpt).

I will close by saying that there is a dispute within Catholicism over the changing of the word "MANY" to "ALL MEN" in the Canon for the Eucharistic Mass. If anyone cares to see what those changes and controversies are, they are discussed in "Questioning The Validity Of The Masses Using The New, All-English Canon" by Patrick Henry Omlor, Foreword By A Roman Catholic Priest(4). In view of the Pope's current drive to bring ALL MEN in the world (not just MANY) to the Communion table, the change is significant regarding the legalities of the Catholic Canon. Here is a quote from afore-mentioned paper:

". . . . that Our Lord said: "to be shed for you and for ALL MEN . . . etc." There is no evidence - either in Holy Scripture or in the Traditions handed down - that Our Lord actually said this when instituting the Holy Eucharist.

"57. Moreover, ALL THE EVIDENCE is that He did NOT say: "for all men," when instituting the Most Holy Sacrament. St. Matthew (26,28) writes that He said, "FOR MANY." And also St. Mark (14,24) records that Our Lord said, "FOR MANY." But NOWHERE in Holy Scripture - neither in St. Paul nor the Evangelists - do we find that Our Lord said, "for all men." Now whom are we to believe? Are we to believe St. Mark and St. Matthew, WHO WAS ACTUALLY THERE at the Last Supper (and both of whom were DIVINELY INSPIRED to write what they wrote)? Or, are we to believe an "enlightened" clique of mid-twentieth-century Modernists and Innovators?

"58. Even in ordinary writing or oratory, careful scholars are diligent in using the EXACT WORDS of another person whenever attributing to him a quotation. HOW MUCH MORE DILIGENCE IS DEMANDED WHEN ATTRIBUTING A DIRECT QUOTE TO JESUS! "It is not lawful to add even words to Holy Scripture as though such words were a part thereof, for this would amount to forgery." (Summa Th., III, Q. 60, Art. 8)

"59. Now, the authors of this new Canon boldly claim that Our Lord SAID SOMETHING that He clearly and obviously DID NOT SAY. (In Part 12 it will be shown that Our Lord COULD NOT have said what they claim He did.) The text of this new Canon reads precisely: "He ... gave the cup ... AND SAID:". The "quotation" IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING includes the BOGUS PHRASE: "for all men so that sins may be forgiven." THIS IS A FORGERY, and those who are responsible for it must be deemed guilty of a deliberate deception, unless they can prove that they are merely completely inept and most culpably negligent.

"60. It might be remarked, in passing, that the phrase FOR YOU AND FOR ALL MEN grammatically is inelegant in that it is redundant. By analogy, a speaker does not single out one person in a group and say, "This is for you and for all in this room," but rather would he say, "This is for you and for all OTHERS in this room." For it is obvious that the person who is singled out is automatically included in "all in this room." Thus the Innovators even go so far as to attribute inferior rhetoric to Our Lord."

"61. From the foregoing it is clear that, by tampering with the words of Our Lord, our Modernists are endangering the VERY SOURCE OF THE POWER of this sacrament."

    Who is Julia Kim?

Julia Kim was born in 1947 in Naju, a city of about 80,000 near the South-western tip of the Korean peninsula. Her father was a teacher of Chinese literature. During the Korean War, in the early 1950s, the father and grandfather perished, together with Julia's younger sister. The years that followed were years of hardship and poverty for her and her mother. Julia could not even complete her secondary education. PICTURE: The Kim family and their four children. They also have two grandchildren.

In 1972, she married Julio Kim, a civic employee of the city of Naju. The Kims had embraced the Christian faith in one of the Protestant churches. Early in her married life, Julia fell victim to various serious illnesses including cancer. Her life became an existence of extreme pain and suffering.

Julia was near death when the Kims were visited by a Catholic priest friend. As the priest prayed over Julia, she received an anointing of the Holy Spirit and was healed completely. The Kims began taking instructions in the Catholic faith, and were received on Easter Sunday, 1982. By now Julia had opened a successful beauty salon. She and her husband both became zealous and active Catholics. Julio was presently in charge of the eno-catechurnenate program in their Naju parish.

    New suffering

In 1982, Julia was called to share in the cross of Christ through new sufferings. This was in preparation for the mission the Lord was preparing for her, to suffer in reparation for the sins of our society and especially for the sins of abortion.

On June 30, 1985, the Kims had been visiting a poor village north of Naju. When they returned home before midnight, Julia began to pray the rosary before a statue of the Blessed Virgin, when she noticed tear drops in the eyes of the statue. Two weeks later, July 18, 1985, she received her first message. On October 19, 1986, the statue began to weep tears of blood. On February 4, 1988, Julia received the stigmata. Eventually the statue began to ooze a fragrant oil, which ceased October 23, 1994. Julia experienced the first Eucharistic miracle on June 5, 1988.

    Meeting Julia

In March 1991, Julia was invited with her husband to the United States to address one of the first Marian conferences, this one in Pittsburgh. She gave witness to the evil and sinfulness of abortion. It was there that I first met her. I had come to the conference to translate for Josyp Terelya — a Ukrainian Catholic confessor of the faith who spent 22 years in Soviet prison camps. On Sunday March 25, the three of us, Julia Kim, Josyp Terelya and I were invited to preside at the coronation of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima after the consecration of all present to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This was the beginning of a friendship that would be renewed in September 1994, when Julia visited Toronto.

    Eucharistic miracles

The Eucharistic miracles of Naju continued, now in the parish church on May 16, 1991, and in the Marian chapel in Naju thereafter. They continue in a variety of forms to the present. The seventh Eucharistic miracle was witnessed by the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Korea, Archbishop Giovanni Buleitis, in the Marian chapel.

During her 1994 visit to Toronto, Julia invited me to the tenth anniversary of the first weeping of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary on June 30,1995. It was only in September 1995 that I was able to keep my promise, an appointment with heaven. Our group — Catherine Lee, a Canadian Korean, Fr. Joseph Finn from London, Ontario, and myself — arrived on Thursday, September 14, at Kwangju airport, where Julia was waiting for us. As we embraced, we were enveloped in the fragrance of roses that often accompanies Julia. We continued by car to Naju, arriving at 9 p.m. in time for the Holy Hour of prayer before the miraculous statue. Around 200 men and women, children and infants were already waiting.

The next day we made it to a large valley in the Naju Mountains. We celebrated Holy Mass at 6 p.m., A week later, September 22, we returned to that area,

The Blessed Virgin had led the Kims to this mountain retreat and asked them to acquire this land. She promised that a beautiful Church would be built there. As in the case of St. Bernadette, she instructed Julia to dig in the hillside, and water sprang from the earth: a new Lourdes in the land of the rising run.

Why was a photographer present, some people have asked? The answer is quite simple. I was welcomed as a most honoured guest. I was the first bishop, and that of the Eastern Catholic Church, to celebrate the heavenly visitations. I needn't elaborate on the Korean hospitality Julia and the women lavished upon me, including a lunch in my honour. Naturally, there were cameras present, including one carried by young Sebastian. It's as simple as that.

After the late lunch we made our way to the valley. The men and women about seventeen in all, set up the open-air chapel. What occurred next is explained in the May issue (see Miracle story)..

It was only later that evening, when Fr. Finn and I were drafting our first testimony to this miracle of a tiny palpitating heart on the tongue of Julia, that we viewed both the amateur video and photographs of Sebastian. He had been snapping pictures once he realized that something was happening. By comparing photos and experience, we could ascertain that this little heart was about 5 millimetres thick.

    Message

Julia remained rapt in prayer and ecstasy when Jesus Himself spoke to her. His voice made itself heard to Julia even though she could not see Him, at once warm and loving and full of dignity and majesty. This was the message:

"My beloved little soul. My most holy Mother is the greatest treasure in the Church... My Mother is the Queen of the Universe and also your Mother... Today my Mother is now showing and revealing My Heart to a bishop, who seeks to follow Me and My Mother, ..so that he can make ever more known that I am truly present in the Eucharist, the sublime mystery of faith and love.

This was the eleventh Eucharistic Miracle of Naju, September 22, 1995. All information is now in the hands of a Commission of Korean bishops who are investigating the events and who will report some time in the future.

    Naju and History

By Bishop Roman Danylak and Fr. Joseph Finn

In our May 1996 issue we presented Bishop Danylak's affidavit and Fr. Joseph Finn's description of what happened at Naju, Korea, on September 22, 1995. Below we print some further reflections by Bishop Danylak and Fr. Finn.

Two questions have been raised. The Council of Trent teaches us that it is the glorified and immutable body of Christ that is present in the Eucharist. How can the Eucharist bleed and change into living, bleeding flesh? Secondly, what purpose is there to such a miracle?

    Eucharistic miracles in history.

The history of the Church records more than one hundred and sixty recorded and approved miracles associated with the Eucharist. I shall present only two, which record the change of the Eucharist host into bleeding flesh: the miracles of Lanciano and Bolsena in Italy.

    Lanciano

At the beginning of the eighth-century, a Basilian monk of Lanciano (near Chieti, on the Adriatic coast of Italy, approx. 100 miles to the East of Rome) was tormented by doubts after pronouncing the words of consecration. Before his eyes the Sacred Host visibly changed into flesh, except in the center where the sacramental species remained intact. The consecrated wine changed into a bright red blood, which coagulated into five small clots. This miraculous host and blood have been preserved to the present day. The Holy See commissioned a group of scientists for laboratory research in 1970. The Osservator Romano on April 3, 1971, reported their findings, which confirmed that the blood is real blood and the flesh is real flesh. Both belong to the same person and the flesh is from the heart, composed of cardiac muscle tissue.

(For a more complete report, see the May 1972 issue of Immaculata, Kenosh, Wisc.)

    Bolsena

The second miracle adduced is the story of the monk, Peter of Prague. It was the time of the Eucharistic controversies of the thirteenth century. Peter was celebrating Mass in the Church of Saint Christina in Bolsena (a town at the banks of the homonymous lake, is situated at about half the arial distance between Rome and Siena) in 1263. He was assailed by doubts in the truth of the Eucharist. He continued to celebrate. As he pronounced the words of the host, the unleavened bread turned into flesh and began to bleed profusely.

News reached Rome quickly and the Pontiff, Pope Urban IV, who was in the neighbouring town of Orvieto at the time, set out for Bolsena. The local bishop was bringing the miraculous host in procession. When the Pope and the Bishop met at the bridge over the river at the entrance to Orvieto, the Pope fell to his knees in adoration of the Eucharistic Lord, whose bleeding Eucharistic Body lay on the corporal. The corporal has been preserved in the Orvieto cathedral to the present day. The following year, August 1264, the Pope instituted the feast of Corpus Christi in honour of the Blessed Sacrament and he commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to write the office. St. Thomas authored the hymns 0 Salutaris Hostia, Tantum Ergo and Adoro te Devote.

The Church has acknowledged the authenticity of these Eucharistic miracles, as it has, in a preliminary fashion, acknowledged such miracles with bleedings of the Eucharist in Venezuela and elsewhere in this decade. Although the diocesan commission of Kwangju has not yet spoken on the twelve Eucharistic miracles that have taken place in association with Julia Kim, two bishops, Archbishop Giovanni Buleitis, the papal pro-nuncio to Korea and I have authenticated our own experiences. Archbishop Buleitis has been following the other events of Naju and has favourably recommended them to Pope John Paul II.

To the astonishment and dismay of the sceptics since September 22, 1995, the Holy Father himself has become privy to the same miracle of the Eucharistic host becoming a living heart during the celebration of Mass in his papal chapel in the Vatican on October 5, 1995, when Julia Kim received communion from his hands. Although the Pope has not spoken himself of this as yet, the most recent publication in English in the messages and miracles of Naju includes the report on the Vatican miracle and includes the text of the messages.

    To what purpose?

The second question is, to what end or purpose. First, out of His infinite compassion for us, for the countless numbers who had and continue to have problems with the Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist, Jesus gives His heavenly confirmation: the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Christ, present under the species of bread and wine.

Secondly, in Naju, Jesus gives the miracles of the weeping and bleeding statue of His Blessed Mother, and now His own Eucharistic miracles, to confirm the authenticity of the heavenly messages communicated to us through Julia Kim. Heaven is serious in its warnings and call to penance, to return to the found of Divine Mercy before it is too late. These miracles, are the appeal of Divine Mercy to forgive our sins and to save us, even at this eleventh hour, from the horrendous punishments for sins, not only of the world, but also of the Church and her members.

There is growing loss of faith and apostasy among those claiming to be Catholics. He laments over his priests:
