May 26th is, as of course all die-hard John Wayne fans know, the Duke's birthday. What even the most studious fans may not have realized, is this year would be John's 100th birthday if he was still alive (I can't hold it against you if you didn't know, not everyone is good at math
.)
In celebration:
The Texas Lottery and 96.3 KSCS hosted a dinner-theater showing of True Grit, in Plano, TX with special guest Ethan Wayne. Everyone that went got a copy of the special edition True Grit on DVD.
The Kansas City Library is presenting a film series of his movies in the
Stanley H. Durwood Film Vault, and library chief ex, Crosby Kemper III, will give a public lecture called Print the Legend about Waynes
career-long collaboration with director John Ford.
~Information~
In Newport Beach, CA, they hosted their 8th annual Newport Beach Film Festival. In honor of the Duke's 100th birthday, they held a press conference on John Waynes
former boat, the
Wild Goose, to announce the launch of the official
John Wayne web site JohnWayne.com. The press conference, was of course also to announce the Newport Beach Film Festivals retrospective
of John Waynes works. It was extra special, because four generations of the Wayne family were in attendace. During the press
conference the speakers included a short tribute by Pilar Wayne, John
Waynes wife for many years, and Ethan Wayne and Patrick Wayne who shared
stories growing up and working in films with their famous father. On
hand was the former captain of the
Wild Goose, Bert Minshall, who
shared some very colorful sea stories in private on the bridge of the
136 foot converted minesweeper. To see the film clip, click
