A message from us!
Hi there and welcome to the new Gloucester Lions Korfball Club website. We are
a new club breaking into the SW Korfball League.
The
point of the club is not to take things too seriously. Most people joining will
not know anything about the sport at all, let alone played it, but that's fine.
We expect new members to be new to the game and the coaching is geared at
complete beginners.
Korfball
is a very easy game to pick up and if you can throw, catch, and run about a
bit, you should be fine. Korfball has been compared to basketball and netball
over the years, but is really a unique sport in its own right, although some of
the rules, for example for passing and running with the ball, are very similar
to netball.
We are hoping to get a regular number of around 20-25 people at training, so
that we can field two teams in the League. The League has 5 clubs already, each
fielding two teams in a first and second team division. Home and away fixtures
are played, so overall ten matches will be played by each team over the course
of the League season which lasts from October til March, so it is unlikely that
matches would occur more often than every fortnight or so.
It is important to get the right balance in any club. Korfball is a very social
sport and it is more or less obligatory to go out for a drink together after
training and matches to get to know the other club members, and members of
other clubs in the League. Indeed, there are summer tournaments whose entire
focus appears to be the social after the games!
We are having at least one coaching session per week which will be
outside in the summer and inside in the winter. There will be some small costs, although we are actively
seeking sponsorship to cover such payments. Other teams in the league tend to
charge a membership fee and a weekly training fee, as well as match fees.
Obviously, being a new club, we are keen not to charge too much at the start,
so we will not charge people for their first few sessions and then we will try
to keep it as cheap as possible.
So,
that's all from us - please pop along to a training session or drop us a
message if you want to find out more information about the club, the people, or
the sport. Please use the navigation bar at the top to read the other pages on
the site or send us a message. Check the you tube link below for a taster video of korfball.
