What it is
A new roleplaying game on unlimitedrpg.com. It takes place in France in the first half of the 19th century, basically following the plotline of Les Misérables, and involving characters from that book as well as original characters.
How to join
  1. Visit the game journal and take a look around, to see if it's the kind of thing you'd enjoy.
  2. Decide what character you'd like to play.
  3. Fill out an application for the character you've chosen.
  4. Send it to the game moderators.
  5. You should get an email back shortly, telling you whether you're accepted or not. Don't worry -- we won't reject you without a very good reason! :)
How to play
Once your application has been accepted, you'll need to create a journal for your character. If you're familiar with LiveJournal or Blurty, you should have no problem with the signup process. The moderators will need to add you to the community, so you can start to play.

Anyone can join in a public scene on the community journal. If you want a more private interaction between your character and another, you can post on your character's journal to start a scene.

You can also use your character's journal to post diary entries, letters, etc.

Characters
Canon characters
Canon characters are ones that appear in Les Misérables. If you are going to play a canon character, you will need to adhere fairly closely to the way he is portrayed in the book.

As of 12 Oct 2003, canon characters who need players include: Jean Valjean, Javert, the Thenardiers, Azelma, Gavroche, Combeferre, Jean Prouvaire, Joly, Laigle (Bossuet), Bahorel, Feuilly, Musichetta, M. Mabeuf.

Original characters
Original characters are ones you invent from scratch. We are anxious to avoid Mary Sues, so if you are going to play an original character, please keep in mind a few things:
  1. The character should not be so extraordinary as to be unbelievable. Having him be talented is okay, but if you want him to be better at everything than the other characters, he's overdone.
  2. The character should not be anachronistic or magical. No elves from Middle-Earth, no time-travellers, no girls who go to school with the boys, no inventing the Internet or saying "cowabunga, dude", no psychic powers.
  3. The character should have realistic flaws with attendant consequences. Don't say she's afraid of mice unless you then play her as freaking out at the first sign there might be mice around. Don't say her only flaws are that she's "too kindhearted", "strong-willed", or "not like other girls".
  4. The character should not be connected to another character unless you have the permission of that character's player -- you can't be Eponine's best friend unless you ask Eponine's player first.
Guidelines
Rules
We want this to be fun, so we are going to have as few rules as we can get away with and still keep order. :)

No powerplaying. This is also known as powerposing or godmoding. You are only allowed to decide what your character does; you can't dictate what other people's characters will do. If you say Montparnasse pushes Azelma down the stairs, without taking into account that Azelma might get out of the way in time, you're powerposing.

No abusing the "no powerplaying" rule! You can't play along up to the last minute and then back out of an interaction -- so if Azelma agrees to fall down the stairs, she can't then say she doesn't get hurt at all.

No supernatural/magical stuff. While that can be fun, it's not for this particular game. Vampires are out; wizards are out; telepaths and sailor scouts are out.

Be civil to other players. If you have a disagreement with another player, work it out in private; don't argue on the community. unlimitedrpg.com has a handy private messaging system. If you can't resolve your problem, the moderators will resolve it for you.

Don't spam! Use the "comments" feature to join in a scene instead of starting new posts every few minutes, and don't post off-topic messages in the community.

That's all!
