Book Release Parties

I'm not really sure if there was a book release party for every book, but I'm fairly certain nothing was available to the public for the first book! The fans weren't around, yet. I posted an inquiry at the COS Forums. It'll be interesting to read what people have to say.

All I know, is that I first became aware of book release parties when book six arrived. My sister and I attended a book release party, at our local mall for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. So much happened that night, and we did so much in preparation! We made Harry Potter treats, we taught a Dueling Game, we brought prizes, our sister-in-law -Mandie- made costumes for us .... what else.... oh! My sister and I were the first to arrive (we were there about 8 hours early), and we received the first tickets! My sister let me have ticket number one, because it was my birthday. Yay for Sissa! Umm ummm, what else.... my boyfriend came too -that made it even more special! His birthday is right before mine --I bought him a Slytherin teeshirt. Oh! My sister and I both won prizes for our costumes. Our pictures were in the newspaper. That was pretty spiffy.

Ha! All these memories are rushing back at me now. I remember as we were waiting for the event to start, a lady came by, and started to preach at a group of us about the "real and better power of God". We had a fun chat with her --and I've gotta say, it was amusing to hear my sister tell her that she was a Christian herself, and didn't need a lesson on Christianity.

Oh yeah! Hehe! When we bought our books, TONS of people were in line behind us. I dared to open up my book, and say stuff like "Oh my god, Harry Potter dies!" I got a few dirty looks --- oh, it was great fun.

This is a short video clip of my sister and I, dueling.

That night, my sister, my boyfriend and I hung out upstairs, reading the book. They're both faster readers than I am, and they kept on talking to each other about what happened --without letting me know what had happened --but I could tell it was really BIG. Ergh! It was driving me crazy, and I know they enjoyed that! They finished the book before I did, and I finished it a day later. (I read a LOT -and I'm not a slow reader; I'm just not a particularly fast reader --I have to periodically stop and think about what I just read, instead of rushing through it.)

Oh, something funny --and kind of sad --- My father hadn't finished the book yet, and one day, I was in one room, and my father was in another; and just had to burst out "I can't believe Dumbledore is dead!!!" Then, from the other room, I hear "Gee, thanks!" Ha! My poor Dad! I didn't mean to spoil it for him!

The Movies

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher's Stone) November 16, 2001

The first time I saw this movie, I was alone, because my boyfriend at the time decided last minute that he wasn't going to go with me. How rude, huh! Though, looking back, I'm glad I saw it alone -I didn't have any distractions, which made it possible to become completely immersed in the story of Harry Potter.

I was charmed instantly.

The scene in which Harry talks to a snake was the moment that Harry Potter became something to which I could relate. (That was about ten minutes into the movie!) I had a similar experience with a rabbit, when I was a young child. I won't elaborate here, but I will tell you that the moment
that particular scene hit the screen, Harry Potter became a perfect reflection of who I am.

I must've seen the movie about ten times, and to my delight, I received the books for Christmas that year.

I hadn't read the books before the movie came out, because I assumed that they wouldn't appeal to me - this was a kid's story, after all! The only childlike stories I appreciated at the time, were the stories from my own childhood. Who'd have guessed that this book series would become my favorite of all time?

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets November 15, 2002

My sister and I were practically jumping out of our skin, in anticipation for the next movie. Both she and I had read books by this time (the four that were available). As most fans are, we were eager to know how close the movie would be to the book. We weren't disappointed. The movie was phenomenal.

I also remember feeling blown-away by the size of the crowd that came to see Harry Potter! When the first movie came out, the theaters weren't all that crowded -and this was in Seattle! This time, we were in a smaller town, and there was a waiting-line all the way around the building.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban June 4, 2004

My sister, father and I saw this movie together, in the same theater as before. The place was just as crowded, though I noticed a few people dressing up in robes. I remember that I brought my book, my Hedwig ---AND my sister brought my birthday present to me that night. It was a teeshirt that said "Muggle". I raced to the restroom to put it on, before the movie started.

Yep, the Harry Potter mania was just starting to sky-rocket.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire November 18, 2005

We went to a different theater, this time around -- a theater that was nearby my sister's college. I went with my father, my boyfriend (Ian) and my sister.

As you can see below, my sister and I were in costume. Our sister-in-law, Mandie, made costumes for us for the book six release party, which took place the summer before this movie. So, of course we wore our costumes for this event, too!

She's a Gryffindor and I'm a Slytherin. Go snakes!

Wizard Rock

Wizard Rock -What is it?

As explained in Wikipedia, "
wizard rock is a musical movement dating from 2002 that consists of a number of bands formed by young musicians playing songs about J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter literary phenomenon. The lyrics are usually humorous and simple, and many bands write songs from the point of view of a particular character in the books, usually the character who features in the band's name."

Harry and the Potters (www.myspace.com/harryandthepotters)

Harry and the Potters were the first to start a "wizard rock" band. I've had the opportunity to see Harry and the Potters twice! The first time, it was at a university bookstore. The second time, it was at a mall -though, the concert was sponsored by a library.

Their music is so-so, but their performance is fantastic! They've got a lot of positive energy, and they're quite funny. It's worth your time to go watch em!

Harry & The Potters & Me!

These are some avatars I made.

Draco and the Malfoys (www.myspace.com/dracoandthemalfoysusa)

The second time I went to see Harry and The Potters, another band called Draco and the Malfoys performed too -- and they were awesome! I think they might be my favorite Wizard Rock group, of all time, but I've gotta give kudos to the original --Harry and the Potters!

Below are two videos of the second performance, that my sister and I attended. The first one features Draco and the Malfoys. The second video features Harry and the Potters. Enjoy!

The Parselmouths ( www.myspace.com/theparselmouths)

I love their music, too! --though I've yet to see them perform. I'm so excited though!! I WILL get to see them perform, this summer, at the "Midnight of Magic" event I'm planning for the premier of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I'm sure they'll rock the house! (er, the mall, I mean!)

Harry Potter Lip-Syncing
