On
May 1st all workers have a free day (holiday). In XIX century various

In Argentina, there were various manifestations from different social

Most people took a day off, but many people had to work. Many workers

In
Argentina, the first commemoration of International Workers Day (IWD)
was celebrated on 1890 in Buenos Aires. At that time, this act was
forbidden by the police, and people still had to work. However,
thousands of workers gathered to fight for their rights.
On the 1st of May, IWD is celebrated with a march (usually along the 9
de Julio St.) organized by Labor Unions. This day is a holiday and
people don’t have to work.
Last Friday, people gathered near the obelisk, along the 9 de Julio St.
and organized a march guided by one of the most important leaders of
the Labor Unions, Hugo Moyano. People brought their posters to the
march, and it was requested for an increase of wages among other things.

The “Workers´ Day” is a universal public holiday
celebrated all over the World in which is commemorated the progress of
the benefits of workers. But every culture has different ways of
celebration. In some places it is a seven or a three day holiday or the
goverment make huge shows and concerts. In Argentina, the Labour Day is
celebrated since the nineteenth century and people enjoy this day since
then. In 1st May people celebrate however they want but there are many things to consider
before planning what to do. First of all, the public transports work as
usual but with less frequency. Besides, some cinemas are closed in this
day and only some others theatres and cinemas are open. There are,
also, people who prefer staying at home or visiting nearly places, or
travel abroad when the public holiday is on Monday or Friday. In
conclusion, workers day is a day off work and that’s why everyone is so
happy but there is lot of people who doesn’t know his origins.

In
Argentina, International Workers Day is celebrated on May 1 as a
commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886, when
Chicago police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight
hour day. We celebrate it in a special way, generally with a street
march organized by a Labor Union.
For example, last Friday the GCW (General Confederation of the Work of
Argentina) organized a movement to the 9 de Julio Avenue. Lots of
workers went to the famous street guided by their leader Hugo Moyano,
who spoke about the next elections.
