Family Leaves Baby Stranded

Vancouver, British Columbia - An immigrant family leaving Vancouver for Winnipeg left behind their 23 month old baby during part of their trip.

"We had 10 minutes before boarding," said Jun Perreno, father of the child.  "We were running for the gate."

Parreno thought his child, J.M., was with three other adults who were rushing to the same gate he was.  The adults thought J.M. was with his father.

In reality, the baby was roaming the airport, going between security checkpoints and flight gates.  He had no separate seat assigned to him and there was no record of him on the flight.

"We were called by security who told us one of the security people had a toddler in tow," said Angela Mah, a representative for Air Canada.  "He doesn't speak English, so we found a Tagalog-speaking agent who has been looking after him."

The family was scattered across the airplane and didn't think twice about J.M.'s whereabouts.  It wasn't until Air Canada contacted the flight that they realised the baby was not on.

The parents were put into telephone contact with J.M. and Jun took a flight back to retrieve his son.  Jun had tears in his eyes when he returned to Winnipeg.

Bobby Cutts Sentence

Bobby Lee Cutts, Junior was not given the death sentence by jurors.

Instead he will serve fifty-seven years to life in prison without parole.

Cutts was tried for murdering Jessie Marie Davis, a twenty-six year old soon-to-be mother and his wife.

She disappeared last June, and was found with her unbron child ten days later in northeastern Ohio.

Cutts had maintained that Davis’ death was due to an accidental elbow to the neck.

But Cutts had also left his two and a half year old son alone while has was disposing of Davis’ body.

Fernando Mack, Cutts’ lawyer, felt that the jury might be angry with leaving the son alone.

Mack had urged the jury to give Cutts the lowest penalty of twenty-five years to life.

After the trial, prosecutors told reporters that Cutts led authorities to Davis’ body.

Cutts offered no statement nor testimonials to his character.

Super Bowl Bookies Lose

Las Vegas sports books reportedly lost a record two point six million dollars on Super Bowl bets.

The total money they handled amounted to about ninety-two million dollars, the third-highest amount ever put down for the second consecutive year.

The all-time put down record was ninety-four point five million dollars in 2006.

In comparison, the original loss record was four hundred-thousand dollars in 1995 when the 49ers beat the Chargers forty-nine to twenty-six.

Interestingly, most of the money was not lost due to bets for the Patriots to win.

Instead, much of the money was bet on the money line that the Giants would dominate the game.

In reality, the Giants were losing until the last few minutes of the game.

Then, they scored a touchdown and blocked a number of Hail Mary plays to keep their lead.

The game ended with the Giants winning, but with a score of seventeen to fourteen.

The payout for those losing bets was as much as four times the original bet due to Patriots’ being the odds on favorite to win.

Russian Doomsday Cultists Die

Moscow, Russia - Vitaly Negodon, a doomsday cult member in Russia who spent months in a cave with his fellow cultists, has claimed that two women have died and were buried in the cave.

According to Penza Administration spokesman Anton Sharonov, Negodon relayed this info to Russian television journalists.  He claims that one womand died from cancer and the other by fasting.

“However,” Sharonov said, “the Penza regional administration is of the view that these deaths must be proven legally, which is possible only if all the people leave the cave so that investigative officials can examine it.”

Sharonov said that those who remain in the cave will exit by the Russian Orthodox Easter on April 27.  After all the cultists leave investigators will check to see if Negodon’s claims are true.

This all started when group leader Pyotr Kuznetsov told his followers to hide in a cave until the end of the world, which he predicted would happen in May.  The cultists had threatened to commit mass suicide if authorities intervened.

After exiting, Negodon told no authorites about the deaths.  Out of the 35 who entered, 11 are remaining.  If Negodon’s claims are true, then only 9 are left.

Paper Airplanes in Space

Tokyo, Japan -  Japanese Scientists and origami masters are planning to launch paper airplanes into space and learn about their reentries.

Shinji Sukuki, the leader of the project, said, ""It sounded like a simply impossible, crazy idea.  I gave it some more thought, and came to think it may not be ridiculous after all, and could very well survive if it comes down extremely slowly."

A test back in February showed that a prototype survived a speed of Mach 7 and a temperature of 446 degrees Fahrenheit, which are conditions similar to and actual Earth entry.

Takuo Toda, the head of the Japan Origami Paper Association, said, "Then I thought, perhaps I could someday have it fly back to earth from space.  Nobody took it seriously, saying it would burn instantly."

The planes are made of sugar cane fibers which are heat, wind, and water resistant.  They then spray on a special coating which gives off little heat friction.  The total number of planes that will be made is undecided.

Suzuki and Toda plan to write a peace message on the planes in multiple languages as well as request for any spotters to notify the team.

Somalian Pirates Attack Tanker

Somalia, Africa - A German warship helped a Japanese tanker fend off a pirate attack off the coast of Somalia this past Monday.

The warship Emden was about 50 nautical miles from the tanker Takayama when they received a distress call.  The Emden went to the rescue at full speed.

Roland Volger-Wander, the frigate captain, said that the tanker was "being threatened by boat with weapons and being fired upon."

A helicopter also launched from the Emden to assist.  Upon arrival the pirates had already left, but the Takayama's hull was full of holes and fuel was seeping into the ocean.

The 150,000 ton tanker was 440 miles east of the Yemeni port of Aden on its trip to Saudi Arabia according to the owner, Nippon Yusen K.K.

The incident is being blamed on Somali pirates who have been running rampant around the area for years and have done similar incidents before.
