Sadie, Sadie... Hammers and Veils
Oct. 9, 2001 (Season Premiere)

The story: Lorelai accepts Max's marriage proposal.
What's up with Lorelai: Able to share her happiness with Rory and the rest of the town, Lorelai can't find the courage to tell Emily about her engagement until it's too late. Sookie called Emily about the surprise wedding shower before Lorelai told her the news. Emily reacts coldly. A few days later, while at dinner with Max, Lorelai decides to confront her mother.
What's up with Rory: When Rory learns she has made the top 3 percent of her class at Chilton, Emily and Richard want to celebrate with a special dinner and she invites Dean as her guest. To everyone's surprise, Richard attacks Dean about not being good enough for Rory. The next day, Paris reminds Rory that grades alone will not get her into Harvard and she needs extra curricular activities on her transcripts. Rory then starts obsessing about how many activities she can squeeze into the summer, leaving little time for Dean.
What's up with Luke: Lorelai shares her good news with Luke, and she's shocked when he acts like it's no surprise to him. He wishes her the best, but tries to avoid having to go to their engagement party and his true feelings.
What's up with Emily: Hurt that she found out about Lorelai's engagement from a stranger, she once again gives her the cold shoulder at their Friday night dinner, frustrated because she doesn't know how to communicate with her daughter.
What's up with Richard: When Rory brings Dean to dinner, Richard suddenly has a flashback to Lorelai at 16, young and pregnant. He then starts firing questions at Dean about school and his future plans, leaving Rory dismayed and angry at his behavior.
What's up with Dean: Surviving Richard's inquisition, he finds himself spending little time with Rory, even though it's summer vacation.
What's up with Lane: She learns her mom has bought her a one way ticket to Korea for the summer. In despair, she leaves Rory her prized stash of CDs and a Lane rescue kit in case she's not back by September.
How it all turns out: Lorelai decides she wants to involve Emily in her wedding plans and goes to her house to apologize. [back to top]

Red Light on the Wedding Night
Oct. 16, 2001

The story: Wedding plans are in full swing and Max stays over at the house for the first time.
What's up with Lorelai: She and Sookie are planning the bachelorette party as the wedding is fast approaching. Max stays over at the house for the first time, bringing up questions and unresolved issues between them. What role will Max have in Rory's life? What say does he have in the house and why hasn't Lorelai thought about their future? These questions and the fact that Lorelai is uncomfortable having Max in the house add to her uncertainty about the marriage.
What's up with Rory: She and Dean are spending the last part of their summer with each other and, after a discussion about which anniversary they should celebrate (the old one or the one on which they got back together) they decide to mark the occasion twice a month.
What's up with Luke: Still hiding his hurt over Lorelai's engagement under a veneer of crabbiness, Luke spouts reasons why people should never get married. Meanwhile the mayor has decided to put in Stars Hollow's first traffic light (for no good reason) in front of his coffee shop, leaving Luke fighting to have it stopped. Surprisingly, he shows up at Lorelai's with a chuppa, a beautiful carved archway under which she and Max can stand when they get married. Saying he had "some extra time," he carved it himself.
What's up with Emily: Without telling anyone, Michel invites her to Lorelai's bachelorette party at a drag club. After one drink she tells the girls about how she felt before she married Richard: butterflies in her stomach, excitement, daydreaming about her new life and secretly trying on her wedding dress every night the week before the ceremony. This leads everyone at the table to call their sweethearts. Lorelai sneaks off to supposedly call Max, but calls Christopher instead, telling him she's getting married.
What's up with Dean: While on a double date with the Gilmores, Dean explains the ground rules to Max. Rory and Lorelai are always hungry, they are at their crabbiest late at night and go along with their "bits," such as the pepperoni and sausage on a pizza getting into an argument. Don't question, just play along. Once you've made sense out of one thing they're doing they've moved on to something else spontaneous and inexplicable.
How it all turns out: Those uncertain feelings Lorelai's been having aren't just cold feet. She realizes that Max isn't the one for her and rushes into Rory's room saying they're taking a road trip. When Rory mentions that the wedding is that weekend Lorelai stops mid-pack. She admits that the wedding's off and Rory throws herself into the plan, packing for a random trip to wherever Lorelai wants to go.[back to top]

The Road Trip to Harvard
Oct. 23, 2001

The story: Lorelai and Rory take a road trip.
What's up with Lorelai: Needing to get away after calling off the wedding, Lorelai and Rory take off on the open road, destination unknown. They first end up at a B&B in New Hampshire, where they try to hide from their overtly friendly host and other bizarre boarders. Stuck with each other in their room starving, Lorelai and Rory end up fighting over why Lorelai decided to end things with Max. She finally admits that she didn't love him. The next day, while on a tour of Harvard with Rory, Lorelai realizes all that she missed out by not going to college and that she needs to finally make her own dreams come true.
What's up with Rory: Lorelai surprises Rory with an unofficial tour of Harvard on their road trip. They wander through campus where Rory is awestruck with anticipation and excitement. Trying to act like college students, with little success, they storm into an open dorm room and then Rory gets a crash course in college after sneaking into a class and participates with ease. Lorelai watches her daughter with pride.
What's up with Luke: Luke hears the news that Lorelai and Max's wedding is off and celebrates by giving everyone in the diner free coffee. When Lorelai returns to town, he apologizes for coming down so hard on Max.
What's up with Emily: Lorelai and Rory give her a slide show presentation of their tour of Harvard. Lorelai breaks down and tells her that the wedding is off.
What's up with Sookie: Lorelai calls Sookie from the road and asks her to spread the word about the wedding so that the whole town will know before Lorelai and Rory return.
What's up with Lane: Lane returns from Korea and admits she had a good time, even scoring some much-coveted CD bootlegs.
How it all turns out: Realizing that Rory will be gone from home soon, Lorelai calls Sookie and says it's time for them to open their own B&B.[back to top]

Nick & Nora/Sid & Nancy
Oct. 30, 2001

The story: Luke's 17-year-old nephew Jess comes to live with him.
What's up with Lorelai: Lorelai runs into Luke and finds out that he's taking in his teenage nephew. She offers help and guidance, which Luke brushes off, saying he can handle the kid. She invites them to dinner at her house to welcome Jess to town. At the gathering, she discovers Jess sneaking a beer on the back porch. Trying to make him feel comfortable, she tells him how lucky he is to have Luke. The lecture doesn't impress Jess and he walks out of dinner anyway.
What's up with Rory: It's Rory's first day of school and Paris is already making her junior year at Chilton difficult. She tells Rory the wrong time for the first newspaper staff meeting and Rory ends up with glamorous assignment of covering the re-pavement of the parking lot. Undaunted, she writes an amazing story and the advisor gives her praise for it. Paris gives Rory her next assignment as payback: An in-depth profile of the school's most popular teacher: Max. Angry that Paris would stoop so low, she takes the assignment and faces her would-be stepfather.
What's up with Luke: Luke is angry at his sister for forcing her 17-year-old son on him. He buys frosted flakes, new sheets and an inflatable bed, hoping that providing food and shelter is all he needs to shape him up. When Jess arrives, he barely acknowledges Luke and wanders off on his own. Luke is confronted by the townspeople who (correctly) accuse Jess of stealing donations from the grocery store and lawn gnomes as a hobby. He confronts Jess, makes him return the property and tells him he will be living by his rules now.
What's up with Jess: Jess arrives in Stars Hollow angry and sullen. He ignores his uncle and tries to figure out how to survive in this insufferable small town. After meeting Rory at Lorelai's dinner party, he tries to get her to sneak out her window and ditch the evening. She doesn't fall for it, and he stirs up more trouble with Lorelai Besides the gnome, he steals one of Rory's books. When he returns it to her later, she's surprised that he read it before and even wrote notes in the margin.
What's up with Max: Max tries to avoid Rory at school, but when she has to interview him for the school newspaper they finally face each other. They both admit that they were looking forward to being a family together.
How it all turns out: Luke admits to Lorelai that he needs help with Jess. [back to top]

Like Mother, Like Daughter
November 13, 2001

The story: Rory is reprimanded by the Chilton headmaster for not making friends at school.
What's up with Rory: While at lunch, a school counselor pulls Rory into her office to say the school is concerned she has no friends. The headmaster then tells her that a lack of socialization could prevent her from getting into Harvard. Determined, Rory randomly picks a table full of girls to sit with the next day. She doesn't realize they are all members of the secret sorority, the "Chilton Puffs." They welcome her and before she knows if, she is pledging their sorority. Their initiation takes place in the middle of the night in the headmaster's office. Just as it's Rory's turn, they get caught. The headmaster says they will all be suspended. Rory cuts in, saying she was just following his directions and unwittingly got mixed up in all of this. He pulls her aside afterward and says she won't be suspended.
What's up with Paris: Paris is insanely jealous that Rory easily got into the Puff's circle without even trying. She tells Rory how important it is to her to get into the secret sorority. She begs Rory to talk the Puffs into letting her in too. Rory convinces them that it would be good to include Paris.
What's up with Lorelai: Lorelai goes to the headmaster, upset that he reprimanded Rory for not being social. He responds by pulling out her parent file and says she too doesn't participate enough and it reflects poorly on Rory. She then joins the Booster club. The day of the show, she discovers that Emily and her will be a mother-daughter team, wearing the same outfit. Despite looking like Nancy Reagan's twin, she enjoys herself. When Ava, one of the Booster club members, flirts with Luke, Lorelai gets jealous.
What's up with Luke: The day after the fashion show, Lorelai tells Luke he shouldn't date Ava because they are both on the Booster club. Secretly he enjoys the fact that she's jealous.
What's up with Emily: Emily is thrilled to find out that Lorelai has joined the Chilton booster club. Lorelai then tells her she will be a model. After the show, Emily tells Lorelai how ironic it is that she is fitting into the world she ran away from so many years ago.

She takes it out on Sookie and they have their first fight about going into business together.

Taylor calls a town meeting without Luke to discuss what to do about the teenage prankster. What's up with Luke: Luke is forced to defend Jess once again after his latest prank. With the whole town fighting against him, except Lorelai, he tells them to back off. When Lorelai admits to him that she and Sookie had a fight, he tells her she's just scared of the risk they are taking. He says he felt the same way when he started the diner, but that she's making the right decision.
