Targeting Steelhead, one of my favorite fish during the coldwater periods and prime bite time frames, occupied many of my years, of hunting trophy fish in the Northeast in search of monster trout.
I spent countless hours fishing the tributaries of lake Ontario and the Lake itself. From trolling for incoming staging fish to drifting for tributary run spawners, there is not too many more exciting trophy fishing situations I would rather spent my time doing. Hunting for steelhead in the 14 to 20 lb plus range with light tackle and light fluorocarbon line may be the epitome of big fun. I targeted these feisty fish from the early 70's thru the new millenium, searching for huge fish from the Eastern to western basins of the lake and all it's prime tributaries. The more productive time frames Thru the deacdes were the October and November days running stick baits off planer boards outside the River mouths for big pre-spawn staging fish, and drifting Spawn bags and Glo-Bugs in the Creeks and Rivers during late Fall, Winter and Early Spring. From drifting sacs on 3-way rigs, popping jigs over rocky bottom, and drifting quick-fish on windy days, the Steelies and Domestic Rainbows provide some of the worlds best and most exciting trophy fish opportunities. Target these fish in the lake from late August out off the thermobars thru the stage with spoons and stick baits run high in the water column at temperature breaks. Once they run the Rivers, drifting fresh skein takes priority. On windy days, switch to kwikfish, stick-baits or spoons to take early spawners. In Spring, there will be fresh run fish and drop backs in diffrent modes of activity levels.
