We just wrapped shooting the first episode of Season 5, and Love did an incredible job directing it! It's challenging to direct the premiere of any show on network TV, let alone one that you actually star in and executive-produce as well! Congrats, Love! If you want to see her in action, check out Love's Directing Journal, which we created for the last episode she directed in Season 4. We promise, you'll get to see, on-line, Love directing the premiere of Season 5 as we get closer to the broadcast date — Friday, Sept. 25, at 8 pm.

The Ghost Whisperer music department is tenacious in casting the nets for great indie music that speaks to the message in each episode. Next season will showcase some great new independent talent sure to become household names. Among the many artists featured last season, we want to give a shout-out to singer/songwriter Josh Arnold. His song, "Skeletons," was featured in "Delusions of Grandview" (Episode 417). Josh was interviewed here about "Skeletons" being featured on Ghost Whisperer. And, Josh, we love you're your music!

In this week's wonderful Ghost Whisperer episode, "Pieces of You," Melinda unlocks the secret of an old forgotten wishing well that is haunted by a mysterious young ghost. And when Sam/ Jim makes a wish at the haunted well, the repercussions threaten the delicate balance of his new relationship with Melinda.

"Pieces of You" is a beautifully haunting script written by our very talented executive producer, Laurie McCarthy, and directed by our visionary director of photography, Jim Chressanthis.

This episode guest stars Kyle Howard (My Boys), Jess Head (Summerland), Isabella Hofmann (Boston Legal), Jerry O'Donnell (Mad Men) and Isabelle Fuhrman (who starred in the film Hounddog with series regular Christoph Sanders. Yep, they're pals.)

Musically, this episode features U.K. chart-topping band The Script (Sony BMG), Grammy nominee and platinum-selling singer Dido's hit song "Quiet Times" (RCA), and indie artists Sounds of Sulphur ("For a Friend") and Adrianne ("10,000 Stones").

Melinda investigates a cursed chain email that goes viral, putting all who don't immediately forward it in grave peril...

[GWEN] A "charmingly awkward" girl, this young college student, 18-20 years old, was recently killed while trying to get help for her mother, who was terribly injured in a traffic accident. Convinced that her mother now lies in a coma because she failed to send on a threatening chain email, Gwen makes it a point of spreading the email, terrorizing those who don't comply with it in a benighted effort to "save" them from her mother's fate. Ultimately, Melinda makes Gwen see that she was in no way responsible for her mother's condition, but Gwen may be holding back crucial information that will help Melinda get to the bottom of the spreading "curse"...GUEST STAR

[BRIANNA] This cute, athletic 18-20 year old college coed is having a make-out session with Ned when they are rudely interrupted by a horrifying discovery. She and Gwen were best friends, although they had quarreled bitterly shortly before Gwen's death. [PAULA] Gwen's mother, in her early 40's, this frail woman lies in a coma, fighting for her life after a traffic accident. CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment have announced Ghost Whisperer The Complete Fourth Season to the hit CBS series will be released September 22, 2009. You can read the release information below. Keep checking back here for an exclusive look at the Fourth Season DVD cover.

As Jay Mohr departs in the season premiere, Jamie Kennedy joins the cast with Jennifer Love Hewitt, David Conrad, Camryn Manheim and Christoph Sanders in Ghost Whisperer - The Complete 4th Season. CBS DVD and Paramount Home Entertainment have announced today that this release will be coming to stores on September 22nd. Not too many details are available yet, but specs provided show it will be anamorphic widescreen video, English 5.1 audio, and a running time of 1015 minutes. Bonus material isn't officially revealed yet, but previous releases are an indication that fans should be able to look forward to commentary tracks, featurettes, and the third run of "The Other Side" webisodes to all be included. That's not for-sure, though, so stay tuned and we'll bring you formal word on that, plus package art, once it's been made available.

All Systems Go...........................

Season Five is on the pad and ready to lift off. But just like any launch, ours has had weather problems up to the last second. Were we going to keep shooting on film or switch to digital? Were we going to find the right actors to play vital new roles? (Which doesn't only mean finding the actors, but also making numerous complex individual deals even for actors who won't get the part, circulating casting tapes all over town, and when necessary convening a dozen very powerful and busy adults into a room to scrutinize the skills, likability and facial features of a small child.) And last but not least, would the Universal Studios Tour trams outside our windows drive everyone MAD??? It all came down to the wire in a grueling week that I hope doesn't get repeated for at least, well, realistically, another few. Except for the way it ended. That I'd be happy to repeat, over and over, and soon. Thanks to the herculean efforts of Donna in casting and Love in preproduction and Kim and Ian everywhere else, it all came together at the last second, and the pieces are now in place for a very exciting new season. Cameras roll Tuesday, a little after dawn, in Los Angeles.

Down at our end of the hall, the writing pipeline is flowing faster and faster. Jeannine did a draft of 502, this one inspired by personal experience, when her daughter received a chain email claiming to carry a curse. Mark got his outline approved for 503, which digs painfully but comically deeply into the family secrets of one of our regulars. Meanwhile John Gray is hammering out the story for 504, which will peel back a gooey layer or two on the haunted history of a key new location. (You'll want to pay special attention to that story this season.) Melissa and Joy are in the room hatching a sleek techno thriller, and Stephanie is noodling a Halloween chill ride.

And Chief Platespinner Laurie continues to do an excellent job making sure that not only do none of the plates crash, but all of them sing.

A Very Big Day

Friday we had our first pre-production meeting for the new season. Headed by first episode director Jennifer Love Hewitt. Writers have been working for exactly one month to produce the first in a long line of scripts. And it's ready to go.

What's a pre-production meeting? Well, here's what happens: Heads of every department join to go over the new script in minute detail. You've heard it before and it's true: Shooting a t.v. show or movie is like waging a war. A whole lot of people have to do their very specific and challenging jobs at precisely the right moment so certain things happen on film when they need to happen. Or else. If one person fails, you have to do it again. And again. Which costs seconds or minutes.

In film, seconds are like lives: once you lose them you can never get them back. And every single member of the crew feels their loss. Because now there's less time to do the next take, the next shot, the next scene, all the rest of the work for that day and that week. Something somewhere WILL suffer.

That's why we have meetings before we shoot. And meetings. And meetings. Because every minute invested ahead of production saves precious seconds when the cameras are rolling.

Friday's meeting was also important for other reasons. As I've said before, we're making some big changes this season -- changes on every level. Where, when, what, who. And when you make changes on a show, you want to make sure people FEEL it. Which means changing not only the where when what who, but the how. New rules on the inside mean new rules on the outside. Meaning the show is going to look a lot different this season. And a key driver of this change is J Love herself. With a mandate to shake things up -- and with her own artist's restless desire to do things differently -- she came to the meeting armed with a raft of new ways to shoot the show. New staging, new filming techniques, new effects. You're going to see them from the earliest scenes of the first episode.

But let's be honest. Many of of you probably don't care that much about what happened at the pre-production meeting. You want to know what's going to happen. What's in that script that we were prepping?

Here's all I can tell you: there's a bowling ball. There's a hospital. There's a ghost. There's a goodie bag. There's another ghost. Several more, actually. There's a baby. There's a party. There's a morgue. There's a very strange dream. There's a ticking clock (literally) (and figuratively). There's a very old book. There's blood. There's tears. There's joy.

CBS has OFFICIALLY RENEWED GHOST WHISPERER FOR IT'S FIFTH SEASON. SO SO HAPPY!

THE CBS 2009-2010 Fall Schedule is below.

CBS is rearranging its Monday laffers and moving frosh hit "The Mentalist" to Thursday — but will otherwise head into fall with a schedule that screams stability.

Eye execs, who announced their lineup Wednesday morning, aren't known for making rash moves during the annual spring rite of scheduling, and this year was no exception.

"We think it's a strong schedule that strikes a great balance between new faces and existing stars, classic franchises and new twists, and some great scheduling," CBS Entertainment prexy Nina Tassler told reporters at a morning press briefing.

Eye's schedule also includes the acquisition of "Medium," which left NBC after a tussle between the Peacock and producer CBS TV Studios; as well as three new dramas and one frosh comedy.

Net's biggest play comes on Thursday, where "Mentalist" will move to the plum slot behind "CSI" for its sophomore season. Move is seen as a way for CBS to vault "Mentalist" to the top echelon of scripted skeins and to shore up its Thursday fortunes.

CBS scheduling topper Kelly Kahl said the net saw a chance to "take the No. 1 new show this year and pair it with the No. 1 show on TV and try to create a superblock."

Eye also hasn't had much luck in recent seasons launching shows behind "CSI"; last season's stabs in the hour, "Eleventh Hour" and "Harper's Island," didn't return.

"On a night with a higher profile and higher HUT (homes using television) levels, there's certainly a chance we could bust (‘The Mentalist') into becoming a top five show," Kahl added.

While "The Mentalist" move had been predicted, CBS' switcheroo on Monday nights was the biggest surprise coming out of the Eye's new lineup.

This is a network that loathes moving things that are working, and CBS had a powerful Monday night this season with "The Big Bang Theory" at 8 and "Two and a Half Men" at 9.

But CBS wants to turn "Big Bang" into a mega-hit of "Two and a Half Men" proportions — perhaps to eventually move it to a new night.

As a result, the Eye said it's shifting the show behind "Two and a Half Men" in order to pump its numbers up higher.

"Our first priority was to punch ‘Big Bang' into the stratosphere a bit," Kahl said.

The shuffle also puts "How I Met Your Mother" back in the leadoff 8 p.m. slot. The show occupied that same position a few years ago, but Kahl admitted that the net "threw it to the wolves" too early in the show's life.

Now, he said, "Mother" has developed a stronger and loyal following, enough that it was ready to once again kick off Mondays.

Tassler and Kahl said "Mother" will be called upon to help launch the Jenna Elfman comedy "Accidentally on Purpose," which will air at 8:30.

On Tuesdays, Eye will continue to kick off with "NCIS," and lead right into spinoff "NCIS: Los Angeles."

That's a night CBS is especially bullish on, now that all three of its major competitors are airing reality from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

CBS event included "NCIS: Los Angeles" star LL Cool J, who performed his 1990 hit "Mama Said Knock You Out."

"Medium's" shift from NBC to CBS came only after a substantial blowup between the two congloms.

Peacock had offered a 13-episode pickup for "Medium," but CBS TV Studios — which has a 22-episode deal with star Patricia Arquette — was looking for a full-season order.

When NBC wouldn't budge, the Eye opted to move the show to its own network, where "Medium" was seen as a natural fit with Friday night's "Ghost Whisperer," as well as returnee "Numbers."

"If ‘Ghost Whisperer' and ‘Numbers' had an offspring, it would be ‘Medium,'" Tassler said.

The give-and-take between CBS and NBC got heated Tuesday, as CBS TV Studios took the unprecedented step of issuing a press release denouncing NBC's decision not to pick up the show for a full season as "inexplicable."

Besides the "NCIS" spinoff, CBS has new dramas "The Good Wife," which winds up on Tuesdays, and "Three Rivers," which will run on Sundays. Jerry Bruckheimer drama "Miami Trauma" will bow midseason.

Also on the bench for midseason are Canadian co-productions "Flashpoint" and the new drama "The Bridge" as well as laffer "Rules of Engagement" and reality entries "Arranged Marriage" and "Undercover Boss." Advertisers appeared to react particularly strongly to the latter.

Among the Eye's canceled shows, Tassler said the network looked at turning low-rated "Worst Week" into a multi-camera laffer, but ultimately passed. And she said decision to cut "Without a Trace" and "The Unit" repped a "difficult choice."

"It was sad to see them go," she said.

CBS honcho Leslie Moonves, who opened the press event, said he's "bullish" about an uptick in the advertising marketplace.

"I really think we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," he said.

At the morning announcement, Eye execs held back their punches on NBC's decision to air "The Jay Leno Show" weeknights at 10.

Moonves called the scheduling "a real sea change."

"There's going to be more share available at 10 p.m. for people who put on great dramas and that's what we do year after year," Moonves said.

But later, at CBS' presentation inside Carnegie Hall, Moonves and company took a few digs at NBC — although never by name.

"There's a big difference between the model being broken and not being able to find any hit shows for years," said Moonves, an obvious reference to the Peacock's stated reason — that the network model has been shattered — for moving Leno into primetime.

Ghost Whisperer show runner P.K. Simonds says we will “definitely” see more Watchers and begin to learn about how the “very important” Book of Changes relates to their abilities: “Over the very, very long span of time that they’ve been watching, [the Watchers] have observed that history tends to repeat itself. That gives them a certain ability to make a pretty good educated guess about what the future is. They are able to know something about what’s taking shape, let’s say, in a character’s womb. And yes, it’s possible to know certain things about the gift that might be growing.”

Do you have any inside info about Ghost Whisperer?
Show runner P.K. Simonds broke the news to us that Melinda is preggers with Jim’s baby, but that’s not all he had to say about Ghost Whisperer’s newest castmember: It’s a “very special baby with an important role to play,” who will inherit unique abilities from Melinda. But Melinda’s “new, young apprentice,” says Simonds, also possesses “other kinds of gifts that we haven’t explored on the show yet.”

So great that Jim remembered himself on Ghost Whisperer, but what’s next? Do they still have two guys playing one character?
According to Ghost Whisperer show runner P.K. Simonds, “We might catch a couple of glimpses” of Kenneth Mitchell, the actor who plays Sam, during the remainder of the season, but that’s it. And we’ll see David Conrad as Jim, but everyone on the show still perceives him as Sam. “He can’t resume [his Jim life] exactly, because Sam Lucas doesn’t have a license to practice emergency medicine, but obstacles are also opportunities. He finds a new direction that actually allows him to go after a specific dream he’s always had.” Like, say, Jim’s dream of medical school? [SAD GHOST/GREER CLARKSON] A pretty but obviously anguished ghost in her mid to late 20s, she's the spirit of a woman who died in the mental hospital shortly after giving birth to her only child, whom she supposedly drowned after falling into a deep post-partum depression. Now, Greer haunts her former sanatorium, which was recently converted into a kindergarten. "Ghost Whisperer" star David Conrad tells fans: I'm still there most of the time -- even if my character is dead

David Conrad's character is dead on "Ghost Whisperer," but the actor says he's not going anywhere.

What does Conrad say to fans who are so unhappy they vow never to watch the CBS drama again?

"I think they'll say that and then they'll watch it and then realize I am actually there most of the time," Conrad said. The actor added, "Ninety percent of the time, it's me standing there."

Executive producer P.K. Simonds put the figure at 99 percent. Jim has moved into another man's body in a plot reminiscent of "Heaven Can Wait," a Warren Beatty movie. Viewers will see that other body periodically to be reminded that the world sees Jim differently.

But Conrad is crucial in representing Jim's soul, Simonds added. "We want the audience to remember that and focus on that. He's the same character. He just doesn't look the same, at least to other people."

Conrad stressed Jim's memory is gone and that "exciting development" means the show can depict Jim and Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) flirting, dating and falling back in love.

And what about the couple's hopes to have a child? What happened to that story with Jim's death?

Here's Simonds' response: "Without giving too much away, I'll just say -- we haven't forgotten that Melinda had finally decided to start a family, and she hasn't forgotten either. (And neither has Jim, completely.) Stay tuned, because you'll definitely hear more on the subject, before the season is over."
