Eastern State Penitetiary

EASTERN STATE PENITENTIARY

WHAT CAN I SAY…..

From the moment we turned the corner and saw this massive imposing castle to the day we turned back to get our last glimpse of this Awesome Eerie Ruin I had GOOSEBUMPS.

GOOSEBUMPS? From what you say…..

  • From the massive facade and beauty of this stone building.
  • From the anticipation of the four hour nighttime investigation ahead of us.
  • From clanking and banging of the large heavy metal doors and gates that shut behind us as we entered and went through the many cell blocks and structures within.
  • From the sound of our guide Jesse’s voice as he prepared us for where we would go and what we might see. He intrigued us with some of the history and the facts on the lives of past Penitentiary inhabitants. Also he told us of some of the more recent haunting tales and sightings here.
  • From the awesome beauty you find in the ruin and decay of this almost cathedral like place. For example arched windows and doorways, skylights, stone floors, cathedral ceilings, ornate moldings and stairways and banisters. There is beauty in this decay.
  • From every step and turn that you make reveals something for your senses. Such as the damp musty odors and the dust you breath in and taste. The sounds you hear like clinking metal, tapping and sounds you can’t explain. Seeing the awesome architectural details, the long dark cell blocks, the heavy wood and iron doors and locks. The Shadows in every corner seem to swirl in your mind.
  • From an encounter with what you believe and hope to be a spirit in Cell Block 1. All down the hall of this cell block at about 8 to 10 feet intervals were large heavy metal signs they use for the Audio Tours in the daytime. (Believe me they are very heavy, I ran into one while taking photos and it hardly budged.) As we got 5 or 6 feet past the first sign we heard a metallic banging sound behind us. We all looked at each other. I asked our guide Jesse if he had ever heard this type of sound on his tours before. He replied “ NO”. I asked Jesse if the pipes running along the walls were in working condition he said no, it’s not the pipes making that sound. We asked if there were any sprits with us and if there was could they make that sound again. We watched in anticipation down the hall towards where the sound had come. As we scanned in the opposite direction we heard the sound again. Jesse suggested we go back down the hall to see what the sound was coming from. So we did. When we got to the first sign I asked Jesse could it be coming from the sign? Jesse wiggled the sign and as soon as we heard it clang on that stone floor, we knew that was what we had heard. We continued back down the hall. We heard it several more times before we left this cell block, whether we ask or not. AWESOME!!!!!!!!
  • From the sound of Jessie’s voice as he let’s us know our four hours is regretfully over.
  • From that last step we took as we departed this mind-blowing place.
  • From the sad feeling you feel as you wish you could do it all over again and again.

THAT’S WHAT I SAY ABOUT EASTERN STATE PENITENIARY

If you have a chance to go, GO!!!

It’s the most exciting, eerie, scary, beautiful place

I have ever been. I would return in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

I don't know if you know the story of the ghost cats, but there was a gaurd or groundskeeper that would feed a bunch of cats everyday that made eastern state there home. When he died in 2001 I believe. anyway an artist made these cat statues in memory of him. I thought that was kinda cool. You can find them here and there in eastern state pen.

Just thought we would drop you a line and let you know what's happen so far. The lst night we got here we went to Gettysburg. We walked around were the shops and bed & breakfast places are. They also have ghost walks here. We went into the basement in the Farnsworth House, there was a man in there who told Ghost Stories about Gettysburg and the Farns worth house. It was pretty cool. We also went back to Roddy Creek Bridge & also another covered bridge called the Utica bridge . We got some orbs and some EVP's. On Monday night we went to Burkittsville (where they filmed the Blair Witch Movie) this area is site of some of the civil war battles. There is a place there called SPOOK HILL! When you put your car in nutrel at the bottom of the hill and take your foot off the brake the car will go up the hill on it's own. They say it is the Sprit's of the civil war soliders pushing thier cannons up the hill. It really did work we got it on video tape. We did it 3 times each time we did it, the car would move slower each time like they were maybe getting tired of pushing us up. COOL.

Thats all so far. We will tell you more as it happens.

Thanx for the comments. We had so much fun. After seeing eastern state on most haunted and taps I could not believe we were actually there I had to pinch myself a few times to see if I was dreaming l.o.l. I thank my cousin if it was not for her we would never have been able to go.

RODDY CRK.BRIDGE LOOKS LIKE THERE IS A FACE IN THIS PICTURE.

Another Great Story By Cassie. I hope It Makes You Smile.

This happened about a month ago just outside of Cocodrie, a little town in the bayou country of Louisiana, and while it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it's real.
This out of state traveler was on the side of the road, hitchhiking on a real dark night in the middle of a thunderstorm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by.
It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face. Suddenly he saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghostlike in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.
Wanting a ride real bad the guy jumped in the car and closed the door; only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel, and no sound of an engine to be heard over the rain. Again the car crept slowly
forward and the guy was terrified, too scared to think of jumping out andrunning.
The guy saw that the car was approaching a sharp curve and still too scared to jump out, he started to pray and begging for his life; he was sure the ghost car would go off the road and in the bayou and he would surely drown! But just before the curve a shadowy figure appeared
at the driver's window and a hand reached in and turned the steering wheel guiding the car safely around the bend. Then, just as silently, the hand disappeared through the window and the hitchhiker was alone again!

Paralyzed with fear, the guy watched the hand reappear every time they reached a curve. Finally the guy, scared to near death, had all he could take and jumped out of the car and ran to town.
Wet and in shock, he went into a bar and voice quavering, ordered two shots of whiskey, then told everybody about his supernatural experience.

A silence enveloped and everybody got goose bumps when they realized the guy was telling the truth (and not just some drunk).
About half an hour later two guys walked into the bar and one says to the other,

Look Boudreaux, ders dat idiot that rode in our car when we wuz pushin it in the rain."

Al Capone's Cell

In 1929, famous gangster Alphonse "Scarface" Capone spent eight months of his life in this cell. The Philadelphia Daily Ledger reported that Capone was enjoying many luxuries during his stay at Eastern. Reportedly, his cell was furnished with large oriental rugs on the floor, oil paintings on the walls, and a cabinet radio. The cell has been restored to its appearance during Capone’s stay and can be viewed during public hours.
