Michael Quinion defines SALMAGUNDI as "a dish of chopped meat, anchovies, and eggs, garnished with onions, lemon juice, oil and other condiments. A right dog's breakfast, in fact." The Seattle Seafair Pirate organization provides this RECIPE FOR SALMAGUNDI on its website. SALMAGUNDI is also a quarterly publication of the Humanities and Social Sciences department of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York -- an institute which describes itself as "a liberal arts college where creative thought matters". SALMAGUNDI DESIGN is an ecclectic design company in Tucson, Arizona. SALMAGUNDI TIN TOYS in Vassar, Michigan offers a wide variety of tin toys for the child in your family. Finally, the SALMAGUNDI ART CLUB on Fifth Avenue in New York is one of the greatest centres for fine artists in the world, providing exhibitions of paintings, sculpture and photography, conducting art classes and painting demonstrations and art auctions throughout the year.
SALMAGUNDI: An Ecclectic Variety of Music
The "SALMAGUNDI" music programme on George's Jungle Internet Radio is a weekly 3-plus hour tapestry of ecclectic musical variety such as you have never heard before! Each week, I take 45 different songs and group them together into sets of five (see below) to provide you with a diverse and divergent buffet of delicious audiophonic samplings.
CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS OF THIS WEEK'S PROGRAMME
Each set of five songs contains three vocal tracks, followed by two instrumental tracks.
TRACK #1: Oldies / Classic Rock
For the purpose of this programme, Oldies constitutes more or less any "Top 40" track from the 1950s through the early '70s. Classic Rock generally starts in the '80s (although I do play a few CR songs from the '70s) and goes up to the end of the '90s. This includes any Classic Rock artists that are releasing new material today.
TRACK #2: The Vocal Track Wild Card
This vocal track can be from any genre at all, including (but not limited to) indie rock, medieval lute music, punk, broadway showtunes, swing, pop, jazz, folk, country, Celtic, bluegrass, new age, soundtrack, and progressive hard rock.
TRACK #3: CCM / GOSPEL / CHR, etc.
This can be any Gospel song of any genre -- e.g.; Southern Gospel, Christian Hard Rock, Gregorian chant, Black Gospel, Contemporary Christian, R & B, soul, Celtic, praise & worship, folk, jazz, etc.
TRACKS #4 AND #5: Instrumental Wild Cards
These instrumental tracks can be from any genre you can imagine -- and they normally are!
An example of "SALMAGUNDI"
Thus, a typical edition of the weekly "SALMAGUNDI" programme ends up looking something like this:
HERMAN's HERMITS -- I'm Henry The Eighth I Am
NEIL DIAMOND -- Cherry Cherry
POISON -- Let It Play
THE BEATLES -- A Hard Day's Night
KOOL & THE GANG -- Celebration
AC/DC -- Hard as a Rock
MANFRED MANN -- Mighty Quinn
SIMON & GARFUNKEL -- Mrs. Robinson
RUSH -- Closer to the Heart
The "Twin Spin"
Each week, I will programme two songs in a row by the same artist. In the example above, I designated the "twin spin" to tracks by an instrumental artist, however I frequently choose vocal tracks as well.
the "Triple Play"
The "triple play" is also a part of every week's edition of the show. This is where I play three songs by the same artist, approximately one hour or more apart from each other. Again, while I "triple played" instrumental songs in the example set above, I do choose vocal tracks from time to time.
the "Pinch Hit"
Okay, this isn't actually part of the "SALMAGUNDI" programme. Not yet, anyway. I could easily add it to the format, though. A hit that makes you want to pinch the person next to you? A hit that you haven't heard in so long that you just have to pinch yourself to make sure you're actually listening to it now? It could be anything. I'll give it some thought. Please e-mail me at spelving@mad.scientist.com if you'd like to share any ideas of your own.
"SALMAGUNDI" starts each week whenever you do!
The "SALMAGUNDI" programme goes on-stream every Monday. Each week's edition of the show is approximately 3 1/2 hours in length and loops continually for the entire week. Therefore, the show literally begins whenever you log on to the broadcast, and "ends" when the point at which you began to listen comes round again 3 1/2 hours later. Many people, however, like to remain "tuned in" to George's Jungle Internet Radio following the conclusion of each week's edition of "SALMAGUNDI" in order to enjoy repeat broadcasts of the programme.
