Soroptimist International
Genesee County

A Little About Soroptimist International of GeneseeCounty

The "Soroptimist International of Genesee County" was chartered on November 20, 1998.  Jean Barth, a long time Soroptimist of  Macomb County moved to the Davison area and got the club started.  The first president was Terri Ayala, then Jean Barth, Nancy Szikszay and now Nancy Davis.

The club meetings are held (for the most part) at the Richfield Township Hall, 5381 N State Rd, Davison, MI every second and fourth Wednesday of the month.   Beginning at 6:00 pm dinner is served!  Dinner is provided by a different committee each meeting so every dinner is a surprise!  The dinner is followed by committee meetings, business meeting or a speaker.

Generally, the speaker meetings are on the fourth Wednesday meetings.   The speakers in the past have been wonderful and have enlightened, entertained, educated and excited every member in some way.  We recently had a speaker from the American Heart Association regarding the "Red Dress Campaign" to educate us on the differences that women present when having heart problems.  It was a great program and thankfully one of our members used that information and sought help and now is "on the mend"!  Other programs have been a "Lingerie Party" held for the YWCA Safehouse-many of the women who come into the shelter only have the clothes on their backs so we thought it would be fun to have a party and bring items for all sizes and shapes of ladies!   Another night we heard from the Lapeer Pregnancy Center, another we spoke with several exchange students sharing their experiences with us,  another Dr Graham who is a gynecologic oncologist shared with us the different forms of cancers in women, the treatments and some preventative measures.  So as you can see from the sampling of the many topics we cover,  our organization has fun yet learns a lot to help in our everyday lives.

Our biggest event of the year is the Installation and Awards Banquet held in June at one of the local restaurants.  We install our officers for the upcoming year and then give out our awards.  (See the "Helping Others" page for further information on these awards)  It is so heartwarming to help a woman with the "Women's Opportunity Award", to see a young girl receive recognition (and monetary help) to continue her education and volunteering help to others with the Violet Richardson Award and to recognize those special women in our community who give so freely of their time and talents with the "Making A Difference for Women Program" which includes the "Women Helping Women", "Advancing the Status of Women" and "Women of Distinction" awards.

Outside of meetings we also give to our community when ever we can.  We have worked at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, cooked and served meals at the North End Soup Kitchen, planted flowers at the Davison Playscape and much, much more.

No organization is complete without fundraisers!  Our two main fundraisers in the community are the Davison Pumpkin Fest where we sell different items we have made and the Holiday Extravanza which is an opportunity for businesses to rent a table and show their special products for the Holidays.
