Information and Self Help for Depression and Self Harm.

Self Harm

Self Harm is a type of way of coping with things. People who are often depressed may use Self-harm to feel a sense of relief. People who self harm are not attention seeking, they are in need of help. A person who self harms quite often does not want to commit suicide (although it can lead to it) but just need to get help...they are not looking to die but for someone to realise they are unwell!

If you cause harm to your body on purpose (physical) to help deal with your problems and feelings, you have to know you have nothing to be ashamed of! You should try find other ways of venting your feelings. Why not try out the Alternatives page.

How do you know if you self-harm? Answer these questions:

  • Do you, on purpose, cause physical harm to your body to the extent of breaking the skin, bruising, leaving marks that last for more than an hour?
  • Do you cause this harm/pain to yourself as a way of dealing with unpleasant or overwhelming emotions, thoughts, or situations?
  • If your self-harm is not compulsive, do you often think about self-harm even when you're calm and not doing it at the moment?

If you have answered to all 3 this means you are a continuous self injurer and if you answer to just the first two then you are a still a self injurer.

Self injury includes:

  • cutting
  • hitting
  • burning
  • scratching
  • skin-picking
  • banging your head
  • breaking your bones
  • not letting your wounds heal properly
  • pulling your hair out.

If you/ or you now anyone that self harms encourage them to contact their GP. They are not there to judge ... but to help you!

Suicide

I would like you to take a minute to read through this, i cant stop the way you feel i may be able to help you though as i know what it is like to be so low and in much pain!

Suicide is a time where you think life has dragged you so low under the mill and you'll never get back out! Its like being shut in complete darkness. No body will ever know what its like unless they too have experienced it. People who have suicidal thoughts think there is no other way out and that they will never get better.

You should if feeling suicidal make new targets for yourself everyday, to show you can do things and get on with your life without thinking about it.

Write down all the things to look forawrd to even if its just your next birthday.....it will give you something to focus on and take your mind off of the way you are feeling.

Stop the 'I cant's' (negative thoughts) with 'I can's' (positive thoughts)

Tell your self you can do things and that you will pull out of this torture.even if you think you cant! You need to keep telling your self you can then you should start to believe in yourself more!

Enjoy a social life with your friends, go out and make plans...go to the cinema....

Make a happy box containing all your happy memories whether it be cards ,photos....anything aslong as they are good memories!

Talk to your best mate or a friend you can trust once a week and let everything out by talking....this way there is someone with you who will be there for you when you need to cry or whatever plus he/she should give you adivce ..... even if its not a serious talk and its just about anything......its still good to chat!

Search for as much help as you can possible! .

You must if you or that you know someone who is feeling suicidal contact their GP immediately!!

Encourage yourself/ or someone you know to seek medical help as soon as possible!!
