JOURNEYS TO GLORY

THIS SITE IS DEDICATED TO THE AMAZING TALENT OF GARY KEMP

The Rubenstein Kiss - Review  17/11/05

The first preview night arrived 18 months after Gary first mentioned that he had been approached to appear in "The Rubenstein Kiss". So as you can imagine I was looking forward to it immensely.

Although Gary had warned me that this first performance may be a little 'creaky' and 'shaky' due to technical difficulties which delayed the dress rehearsal, he really had no need to worry as the play went without any noticeable hitches. Playing the part of Paul Crammer an FBI agent Gary had his American accent spot on, although I am no expert. All the cast members complemented each others' performances perfectly, and therefore it is impossible to single anyone out for a special mention..

The Play itself is brilliantly written and combines the past and present effortlessly, helped by the skilful use of music, atmospheric lighting and a smoke machine.

Without going into to much detail which will spoil it for those of you yet to see it I would just give you one piece of advice and that is to do a little reading into the background of the story, as this will undoubtably enhance your enjoyment.

The Rubenstein Kiss, is very political and explores the rights and wrongs of McCarthyism by touching on the House of Un-American Activities Committee investigation into the Hollywood Motion Picture Industry and the testing and subsequent dropping of the Atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  It also explores the complexity and fragility of family relationships.

As the play ended I was aware that James Phillips, the writer, had not tried to dictate the rights and wrongs of what happened and you were left ot make up your own mind about the role Gary plays. Did Paul Crammer genuinely want to help the Rosenbergs? or was he just a pawn in a much larger political game. This is something you have to decide for yourself and no doubt opinions will differ.

In summary a brilliantly written and performed play which has the potential to prompt numerous interesting debates. If this play does not reach the West End then it is a sad reflection on the intellectual capacity of todays theatre going public

This play was a huge success attracting rave reviews and a nomination for Gary as best supporting actor. It's now 4 months since those wonderful performances so I thought it might be nice to have a little reminder, so here is a link to a two page article written for 'The Times
