The Gambia Flag

MEANING AND ORIGIN OF THE GAMBIAN FLAG

The flag was hoisted up for the first time on 18th of February in 1965, the independence-day. The three horizontal stripes red-blue-green are separated by two very narrow white stripes.
Red stands for the sun, blue for the river Gambia, green for the agriculture and the richness of the land, white for the peace.

The coat of arms of the country was awarded on 18th of november in 1964 by queen Elisabeth II. Axe and hoe in the blazon and the palm tree on the helmet point the agricultural base of the national economy. The lions as shield-holders embody proud and dignity, but suggest the former british colonial government, too
